Last week from half-way across the world he sent me this message: I have learned this from experience and firmly believe it: The public schools are the strongest fortiHcations of liberty, and those who dedicate their lives to guarding these posts are among the brave few we can never forget or repay. I shall not disclose his identity for I think that might embarrass him, but of course it is heart-warming to get an endorsement of that kind and especially from such a source, since I'm sure the boy has no axe to grind, Though to be completely honest, I think he gives to us, his teachers, more honor than we may deserve. But that is not what I want to talk about, Rather it is the message that underlies his words, for what the boy is trying to say is something of this sort: Why couldn't I have seen when I was in school the things that are so clear to me now? Why didn't I learn then what now I know would have been so much to my advantage? Why did I tand so many more like mel resist instead of accept? Must the teacher always force upon me the things that are for my good? Why? I shan't mince words hereg this matter is too serious to call for a dis- play of tact. And most of you are just as capable of straight thinking in regard to it as I am-and you can stand unvarnished talk. You know perfectly well that the heel-dragging and obstructionism and resistance that clusters around school obligations is set up by those of you who want to have all the privileges and prerogatives of an adult but refuse to assume the responsibilities that always must go with them. To put it bluntly they are the ones who are afraid to grow up. To hear them tell it one would think that they are demanding only that which is in keeping with their dignity and what they conceive to be their superior status, but the plain truth is that they want to be babied. After the Civil War General Robert E. Lee became a teacher, and one day when asked by a father what he fthe fatherb should teach his son, said: Teach him to deny himself , for Lee knew that self-indulgence is the easiest of habits and can most thoroughly destroy character. He could have added: Sweet are the uses of adversity. It used to be that boys and girls were brought up to expect no favors, to ask only for what they were entitled, to expect only what they deserved -and thus could prove themselves to be men and women. That's still possible now. You don't have to wait until the year after next. EDGAR J. MONGAN GEORGE V. BUTTNER STORES, Plymouth and Marshfield Published by Plymouth High School Dedication ........ The wintry wind o'er the dry grass, The lonely call of the gull, All illustrate the work of God Observed in a busy day's lull. If we take the time from our duties Into the eyes of nature to peer From a high cliff 'bove the ocean To understand all that is sheer Beauty and love and religion, ls it not worth your while To linger - just for a moment And seem to see God smile On the toil and tribulation Of this earth that is ours for awhile? BETTIE CROWELL Class '57 THE STORM The air is filled with sadness, The sky of blue turns grayg A heavy mist forms o'er the earth, A storm has come to end the day. The raindrops lightly fall at first And gently kiss the groundg A lightning bolt glares in the sky And rain falls all around. This is a storm to end all storms, - A thing of beauty and array. A thing created just by God. To wash earth's sins away. PATRICIA FECI N KJ N f . A man who reasons not the whys and wherefors of life but only reasons why he reasons. So imprisoned within himself that his outlook becomes dis- torted and cynical. A glance at the sky for him is nothing more than a spec- ulation on the weather. So involved is he in the test tubes and theories of his com- plex existence that he rarely becomes self aware. This is a modern man. GEORGE SAMPSON Class '57 if fi 'N LIT PIT it M ff f 79 1 X, gx M 44-2 -, THE ART OF APPLE POLISHING THE RIDE Hooves trample dank earth. The fog carries The sound and brings it nearer My fearful drums. The sound is ominous. The smashing hooves are closer still, The ground bursts forth in flame Fog and fire display A sinewed horse, Muscle and sweat mirroring flames- My transport to Hell. GEORGE SAMPSON Class '57 SPIDER'S MASTERPIECE Oh, thing of fragile beauty, Why are you hanging there As if some immortal painted you With dew, right on the air? BETTIE CROWELL Man has ever had a soft spot for the apple. Consider Class '57 D CI V i ill I g, - A FIELD OF CORN The sun rose and shone Upon a field, An abundant Held, A glorious field of corn. The sun rose and shone Upon men, Men en masse, Men with sinew And enemies. Men at war Trod Helds of corn To fields of battle To fields of death. The men of war, The fields of death, Are not long for memory, And man still marvels at a field of corn. GEORGE SAMPSON Class '57 Adam: he had Eve and the Garden of Paradise, yet he gave it all up for one bite of that succulent fruit. Think about Hercules who held the world on his broad shoulders while Atlas went to gather him some apples. Look long at a still life painting of a square apple on a round table if you are modern art happy, and you will find it divine -if you find it at all! Browse along the market district of any city, and it will be the apple carts and stall that beckon and entice you to linger. 'The apple is beautiful, and it is also irresistible. Many people, in the course of time, have discovered this fundamental truth. and have exploited it with ulterior motives in view. They have polished it literally and figuratively. Sometimes their profferred apple has the person undeserved knows that to whom it is rewards, but it is a good such a sheen that it blinds offered. Sometimes it brings sometimes, too, the recipient apple, but rotten at the core . However you look at it. the apple has been debased it should be with all of this figurative polishing. and restored to its rightful place as the prince of fruits. This can be done someday soon, I hope, when a small boy with rosy cheeks offers his apple to someone he esteems, as a simple gesture of admiration and good faith. THE MEMORIAL PRESS, Middle Street, Plymouth HGNUR GRUUPS AT PLYMUUTH HIGH SCHUOI. Election into the Massasoit Chapter of the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors conferred by Plymouth High School. The elec- tions are held twice a year, and students are elected by their fellow- students and the faculty. To qualify as a candidate one must distinguish himself in Scholarship, Character, Leadership and Service. Both juniors and seniors are eligible for election, but juniors must be re-elected in their senior year in order to remain in this society. The new members are initi- ated into the chapter at a candle light service held in January. The Honor Society heads the school Press Club, is in charge of the main bulletin board, and is always busy with various activities throughout the school. Always striving to improve school activities and conditions, the organization is known for its constant service to the school. Any student having obtained an average of 85 or better in January of his senior year is automatically a member of the Senior Honor Group. Mrs. Miriam Raymond, advisor, and the group meet every Monday night from January to June to plan graduation. It is this organization which takes care of all the minor and major details of the commencement exer- cises. This year's group is comparatively small, but all the members are reliable and responsible workers who will help to make the school and town proud of the graduation exercises. An Inspiring Start Plymouth High opened its 1956 football season as guests of the Gold and Scarlet of Bridgewater on September 22. Bridgewater dominated the offensive play until Romano pitched to Brady, who raced wide to his right, stopped short, and whipped a pass to Stan Ferreira, who had come from his right end position to the left sideline. Ferreira, all alone, took the pass in stride and raced for the touchdown. Brady tossed a short pass to Frank Anderson, a promising sophomore, for the extra point. The half ended with Plymouth leading 7-0. Bridgewater came to life in the third quarter, after a long march down field and came through with the touchdown plus the extra point. Coach Mullen tried a quick aerial attack, led by Brini, which ended onthe Bridgewater 20 yard line as the final whistle blew. The 7-7 tie was the best opening game Plymouth has had in many years thanks to the good coaching in blocking and tackling of Coach Mullen and Coach Kiberd. A Strong Defensive Battle On the following Saturday, September 29th, Plymouth played host to Rockland. Despite the fact that the locals were defeated, 12-0, they played a superb defensive game, considering Rockland was known to be an of- fensive powerhouse in the Old Colony League. Rockland scored in the second and third periods, while Plymouth had trouble getting their of- fensive attack moving. John Pimental, Tim Brady, Wayne Travassos, and Stan Ferreira were Plymouthls standouts on defense. Our First Signs of a United Offense Plymouth entertained Abington on October 20th. As had been pre- dicted, the Big Green proved too tough, scoring three touchdowns in the second half. Dick Tache received a kickoff during the third period and ran it back to the Abington 40 yard line. Clyde Brini rolled out around his left end and ran forty more yards for the touchdown, which made Plym- outh the first team in the Old Colony League to score against Abington. The final score read Abington 33, Plymouth 6. John Pimental played his usual outstanding game on defense for Plymouth, and Rodney Pimental also did a fine job running, together with Dick Tache on offense. A Moral Victory On November 10th, Joe Alves, a fighting quarterback, sparked the Blue and White against the powerful Barnstable team. Plymouth scored in the first quarter with a quick 36 yard dive tackle smash by Vic Morini. Alves scored the extra point on a keeper. Barnstable, after a long battle up field, scored from the one foot line. OLD COLONY INTERSTATE THEATRE 7 12 20 47 33 13 12 19 7 Plymouth took over immediately, Malaguti carrying to the 30. Ferreira took a pass to the 39 and backed Brady to the 48. Alves skirted his left end, broke into the clear, and scampered 52 yards for the touchdown, Brady picking up to the extra point. In the second half Barnstable came to life, making a quick touchdown and kicking the extra point, bringing the score to Plymouth 14, Barnstable 13. Barnstable halted Plymouth on their own 39 and fought down to P1ymouth's 27. Hopkins scored on the next play. Plymouth fumbled on the third play after the kick-off and Barnstable had no trouble eating up the remaining minutes of the game. Barnstable won 19 to 14. Victory for the Deserving On November 17, Silver Lake with a good record of two wins and two losses, came to John Seiver Field to try to defeat the win-less Blue and White. The kickoff was short, going to George Govoni, who downed it on Plymouth's 46 yard line. Plymouth penetrated down field rapidly with two complete passes and four oifside penalties against a nervous Silver Lake line. The ball was on the Lakerls one yard line but Plymouth's line wasn't united enough to have one of the backs take it over for the T.D. The Gray and Red kicked to their own 45, but Jenny intercepted a Plym- outh pass and started the Lakers rolling. On the next play, Stan Ferreira intercepted a Laker's pass and ran 48 yards for the touchdown, with the help of a Brady block. Joe Alves sneaked through the extra point, and Plymouth had a 7 to 0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Andrews re- covered a Plymouth fumble but the stubborn Plymouth line wouldn't give up much ground and took the ball over. Tim Brady broke away into the clear on a centerbuck, up the middle 50 yards to the Lakers 10 yard line. The tide turned, and it was the Gray and Red that wouldn't give up much ground and took over on their own 5 yard line. Mike Andrews started a roll around left end in his own end zone but Den Vecchi smashed across the Laker's line stopping Andrews, immediately after John Pimental and George Govoni completed the tackle that gave Plymouth a 9 to 0 score at the half. In the second half, Andrews, discovering he could not make any ground sweeping the ends, hit the tackle holes constantly until he kept it on a keeper and went over for the touchdown. Stanghellini bucked for the extra point and it was Plymouth 9, Silver Lake 7. The Lakers kicked off, and Alves carried to the 20 yard line, but after three downs Plymouth was forced to kick. The Brady punt was short, going to the Plymouth 40. Den Vecchi again made a great save when he jumped on a Silver Lake fumble. Thus killing any chance of Sliver Lake scoring again, although Plymouth lost the ball on downs with 29 seconds remaining to be played. The des- perate Lakers Hred many passes and moved up field to their own 42 yard line, but the whistle blew and the Plymouth fans went wild. The score: Plymouth 9, Silver ,Lake 7. ' ' ' Y ' .
