Dances Highlighted Social Scene The rhythmic pulsation of the music was a reflection. Just as in years post, students were to- gether and having fun by danc- ing. Nothing had really changed —the beat was a little faster, the clothes sometimes more casual, the spirit more liberated than in former years. But many more things were the same; the girls' pleasure in long, formal dresses, the struggle to find a good theme and the hurried decorating, the exuberant happiness of an after- game dance following a victory, the cokes, the exchonges of laughter, and the formation of lasting friendships and memories. Living in the present, students were unaware of the post being relived. They thought only of the songs' messages, the people around them, and their immedi- ate fun.
