Renewed spzrzf . 1966 VARSITY FOOTBALL At the beginning of the 1966 season everyone had high hopes for the Ply- mouth-Carver varsity football team to open with a victory. After well played scrimmages versus Wareham and Dennis-Yarmouth P-C traveled to Bridgewater-Raynham to play its initial game of the year. Ply- mouth was picked to win over a very poor Bridgewater eleven. The first half saw neither team penetrate the other's ten yard line, and thus, go to the locker rooms with a O-0 half time score. When the teams returned to play the second half, both seemed anxious to win. Bridge- water wanted to win more, however, and consequently won on a thirty yard run by White. P-C vainly tried to score in the waining minutes but time ran out. Bridgewater Raynham won 6 to 0. Ply- mouth's team was actually superior, but since they hadn't won for so long, they really didn't realize what victory was like. Her second game pitted P-C against Rockland. The contest saw Rockland take a 20 to 6 half time lead. Coach De- Sisto must have really spurred the team during half time as they came back to score 14 points in the second half almost pulling it out. Bill Butters was stopped inches short on a conversion attempt which would have won the game. On the third Saturday of the Football season P-C met and defeated a weak Middleboro eleven. Middleboro scored first on a long run. Then Don McLean passed 30 yards for a first down on the Middleboro ten yard line. After a few running plays, Will Stearns crashed to pay-dirt via a six yard jaunt. The teams played on an even basis until Don Mc- Lean hit Smith on a sixteen yard game Winning scoring strike. P-C' won 12 to 6. Plymouth had her first victory in over twenty games. At this point of the season P-F should have had three wins. The biggcrv fhvy un' . . . Kick-off.' I'-F ws. The green wave of Abington broke on the Blue Eagle's new field the next week. For once, our team struck first as Bill Curtis hauled in a long TD bomb to put Plymouth ahead 6 to 0. The first quarter was completely controlled by P-V. With a strong wind in their favor, Abing- ton scored twice in the second quarter. Ninety per cent of Abington's plays were run on the right side of the P-F line. Abington finally won the game 20 to 6, but not without a fight. Abington was the best team P-C faced and it was the only game which should have resulted in a P-C' loss. ll8 Whitman-Hanson was the next opponent of a P-C team whose head coach was hospitalized with pneumonia. Mr. Aresta and Mr. Cryer, however, did a very fine job in Mr. DeSisto's absence. On the first play of the game a 60 yard pass gave W-H an eight point lead. Then P-C took over. St. George burst through the enemy line and nailed the W-H quarterback in the end zone for two points. In the third quarter P-C struck twice to go ahead 14 to 8. Ed Krokowski scored late in the final period making the final score P-C 20, W-H 8. Q10-ni Hingham provided the opposition for the next game. Bob Coughlin, Hingham's ace quarterback passed for the first touchdown of the game. When Plymouth received the en- suing kickoff, Butters promptly ran forty-five yards for a score. Also in the second quarter P-C scored on a forty- five yard toss from Don McLean. This was the only game of the season in which Plymouth had a half time lead. It didn't last long as Hingham evened the score in the third period. The final TD was registered on a quarterback sneak by McLean. P-C won 20 to 12. Randolph provided the opposition the next Saturday. Both P-C and Randolph showed good defenses. P-C's de- fensive secondary, however, was not prepared to meet Ran- dolph's fine passing attack. Randolph shut out P-C and subsequently went on to win the Old Colony League Cham- pionship. The Blue Eagles could have beaten Randolph had the field not been so soft it didn't give the fleet P-C backs chance to turn the corner. Scituate came to Plymouth on a cold and rainy day. Steve Rogers had to fill in for the injured co-captain Don McLean. He did a great job. The scoring was opened by Scituate on a one yard plunge. Then P-C countered with a forty-two vard run bv Butters. At the half the score was P-C 6, Scituate 6. The game ended in the Blue Eagle's second tie. Although P-C came close to scoring again it didn't quite make it. Seven against one V ' R S 1 g iii-if 5 ea 1 M '17 r gg., .. ' . I J'-...Q 'Z 7 --1' ....: 1 ' ' F, W- ' . . . The first period saw P-C completely dominate the play and score two touchdowns on runs by Stearns and Butters. It looked like an easy win. The second quarter almost was a disaster for P-C as Silver Lake scored three times to lead at the half 18 to 12. Luckily, the Blue Eagles kept their rival from scoring any points in the second half while they scored twice. The final score of the last game of the 1966 season read P-C 26, Silver Lake 18. The Blue Eagles ended the year with four wins, three losses and two ties, and finished fourth in the league.
