Persecution, prevalent in Man since His origin. Not a transitory practice, but rather a permanent one,' for it is inherent in humanity, and has proved an extreme means of expression. Man, dissatisfied with himself, looks for a scapegoat upon whom this dissatisfaction can be thrust. Or, a fear is manifested in persecution- a fear that well-worn paths will be covered by autumn leaves of dissention and new byways will be hewn through the forest of Establishment. . . Such was the case in England.' a fear of the Church that a Quiet Revolution would upset the Order. And thus, the fear manifested itself in persecution. Driven to rustic catacombs, the Dissenters sought freedom of expression- freedom-a shadowy image, an unnamable Essence, an ideal. Their passive strength: a refusal to fight. Migration . . . to Holland . . . The answer! The discovery of freedom! But no, not the freedom of self-determination. Only the molding of Self to the form of the Other. Foreignness permeated their existence: alienation from the Homeland bred melancholy. Wasted hearts, tugging already bowed heads to lower depths. New acquaintances, new practices.. .so hard to conform. They returned home, not as the Prodigal Son -not seeking forgiveness or acceptance -but with a Dream, a brave Dream, an unheard of Dream. Bearded heads meeting in thought planned a new society. An agent secured the means of emigration. . . The pilgrims departed. Thrice stopped in actual voyage-many disappointments -but not abandonment. Dreams in a mental cocoon erupted in winged Reality. Physical bonds were severed.. . but never those of the spirit. Freedom pierced the sea. ..a glimmering beacon. The choice, the step, never would they return. They would look back though . . . but, only over caped shoulders moving forward.
