X1 conquering the land ana' Conquering the land and befriending its people . . a harsh land of Decernber snows and piercing winds, a wilderness of naked trees and frozen earth . . . Plyinouth. The Pilgrim Fathers survived the lacerations of their first New England winter, and, renewed by the gradual rebirth of the land that spring, set about its conquering. With the invaluable aid of Squanto, an Indian who had once been sold into slavery, they befriended the nearby Indians and their proud chief, Massasoit, with whoin that fall the Pilgrims shared their abundant harvest in the first Thanksgiving. Now they are gone . . . but Plyniouth rernains, . a syinbol of their faith and courage, an Ainerican heritage. 6
