Q-1.17. f H f :al . The 1964 PILGRIM is dedicated to Mr. Patrick Berry. We thank him for his sense of humor, his concern for us all, and his friendliness. Those of us who have been in Mr. Berry's art classes need no delineation of his personality. We know him well. He's the smiling extrovert who calls us by outlandish names and regales us with equally outlandish jokes. He's the one who understands our artist's lament- I just can't get it to come out right! -and deftly shows us how to remedy the situation. H e's the one who surrenders his paper and paint for our posters and props and teases us continually about depleting his stock. He's the one who talks with us on any subject from abstraction in art to man's inhumanity to man. He's the scintillating, sensible, sensitive one. He's the one. DEDICA ff 4 jzff . Pbfmoulh-Carver Wins First Zaniboni rolls up yardage against Whitman-Hanson. On September 28 at Siever Field, Plymouth- Carver opened its season by defeating Bridge- water-Raynham 6-0, on a third quarter Bonna- to-Perry pass. A great defense stopped Bridgewater fourteen times inside the Ply- mouth seven yard line in the last quarter. The Blue Eagles gained their second vic- tory in the heat at Rockland 12-0, on touch- downs by Perry and Holmes. Again the defense was outstanding, giving up but four first downs as Rockland was forced to punt nine times. Middleboro became the first team to score against Plymouth as it went ahead 6-0, on a bootleg play by John Bragag but the Eagles came back to win in the second half on two touchdowns by quarterback Ralph Bonna. On October 19, Plymouth defeated a strong Whitman-Hanson eleven 6-0, on a first period touchdown by Evan Holmes. It was Ply- mouth's third shutout in four games, and George Gonsalxes up the middle for Plymouth- Carver. Whitman's only loss of the season. At Abington the following week, Plymouth avenged its only loss of the previous year by defeating Abington 32-28. Plymouth jump- ed to a 32-0 lead in the first half, but Abing- ton came back to score twenty-eight points in the second half. A second quarter touch- down on an interception by Kent Stevens, after Ralph Bonna scored two touchdowns and passed for two more, proved to be the win- ning margin. fase 'ft-3' awk x 1 QM, Southeastern Conference Title Playing Lawrence High of Falmouth, a non- league opponent, on Monday, October 28, Plymouth lost its only game of the season 18-7. Falmouth scored on two long passes and a blocked punt. Allan Young scored the only Plymouth touchdown. Randolph proved to be Plymouth's sixth victory and fourth shutout of the year, 12-0, at Plymouth. George Gonsalves and Norm Zani- boni each scored touchdowns, and the Blue Devils were held to only one first down. The following Saturday Plymouth traveled to Scituate, where it triumphed 7-2 to retain the conference lead. Dave Perry scored first, and the Sailors blocked a punt in the second half for a safety. Scituate quarterback Con- nelly threw thirty-two passes in a losing cause. On Thanksgiving Day, before 6,000 fans, Plymouth played Silver Lake, 6 and 1 in league play, at Silver Lake. Ralph Bonna threw his Holmes takes off around the end. eighth, ninth, and tenth touchdown passes of the yearg and George Gonsalves ran for a touchdown as Plymouth won 28-13. Plymouth-Carver High won its first South- eastern Conference Championship with an 8-0 conference record and an 8-1 overall record. Much of the team's success is due to its great head coach, Joseph DeSisto, whose three-year coching record is 23, 3 and 1. If Another Bonna TD bomb? With four starters returning from a 1963 team that barely missed two championships, Coach Hank Rogers' Blue Eagles fulfilled all expectations of an excellent season by capturing the Old Colony Lea- gue championship for the second time in three years and the Eastern Mass. Class C championship for the third time in four years. The first game, in December at Taunton, saw the Eagles lose 67-73 to a strong Coyle team fwho rolled on to become co-champions in the stiff competition of their own Class A Bristol County Leagueb. P-C then lost to the Alumni 52-55 at the new Plymouth-Carver gymnasium. After these first two disappointments, Eagle fans cheered to thirteen consecutive P-C league victories. Throughout the first half of the season P-C won most of its games easily, led by the scoring of Carleton Kendrick, the terrific ball-handling of Larry Brewster, and the outstanding all-around play of Kent Stevens. The only close game occurred at Silver Lake, where the Eagles won 60-54. In what was considered the first of the two big games, P-C decisively whipped arch-rival and defending lea- gue champion Rockland High 61-40 at Plymouth. Following five further victories, P-C clinched the Old Colony League title as the team beat Whitman- Hanson 82-51 at Plymouth. The :following Friday the winning streak was broken at Rockland as the Bulldogs edged a 59-58 win. Plymouth-Carver placed three players - Kent Stevens. Carleton Ken- drick, and Larry Brewster - on the All-Star team. Kendrick led the O.C.L. in scoring with 415 points, and averaged 25 points a game. , Struck by bad luck, P-C lost the All-Star game 55-62 as Carleton Kendrick injured his ankle in the second quarter. Faced with a lack of height, the Blue Eagles could not control the backboards against an exceptionally tall All-Star team. Get 'em Kent! NL-f Flu... Get your hands off that ball - it's mine! Because of its fine record, P-C drew a bye for the first round of the Eastern Mass. Tourney. In the quarter-finals, led by Kent Stevens and Dennis Perry, the Blue Eagles defeated Holy Family of New Bedford 57-42 at North Quincy. The semi- finals in Boston Garden on March 10 saw P-C matched against undefeated Sharon, Hockomock Lea- gue Champions led by Jim Shyne and Don Klos. Before 10 busloads of enthusiastic P-C students, the- Eagles won 59-52 as Paul Fowler and Kent Stevens tied for high scorer with 14 points each. Now a finalist for the fourth consecutive year fa Class C recordj, P-C met Chelmsford, Winner of 48 straight Lowell Suburban League games, for the third time in three years. Kent Stevens gave fans several anxious minutes as he injured his ankle in a fall late in the third quarter, but he returned in the fourth to prove a decisive factor in the game. In this tight, hard-fought struggle P-C emerged victorious 44-42 on the final foul shots of Larry Brewster, thus avenging the loss in the Tech finals to this same team in 1963. This victory completed P-C's 1964 season with a 16-2 official record, giving Coach Harold Rogers 192 career victories and his third Class C crown, a record in itself. The members of the class of 1964 channelled much of their enthusiasm and energy into the production of a variety show, a musical revue of the twentieth century entitled Three Score and Four. The first production of this kind at Plymouth-Carver High School, the show was also unique in that it was completely plan- ned and directed by the students themselves. The various committees - continuity, pub- licity, tickets, house, programs, ushers, and singing and dancing choruses - were ably led by Director Teedee Spelman, Assistant Direct- or Christine Wirtzburger, and Senior Class Advisor Clare Driscoll. The long hours of re- hearsal were not only work, but also fun, and an experience in cooperative efforts to reach a common goal. The students' endeavors were well-rewarded, for the show, presented on April 10 and 11, was a smashing success, and proof of the creativity and responsibility of the seniors. V .1 X v A A.. The Dicksons, our photographers, who willingly contributed countless hours to preserve the year in pictures. Mr. Robert Vantine, our representative from the Delmar Printing Com- pany, whose quiet suggestions always proved valuable. The United Church of Christ, whose bulletin of November, 1963, pro- vided us with the idea for Viola's pen sketch of the thankful Pilgrims. Plimoth Plantation, who gave us a selection of photographs for our theme pages. Mr. Randolph Abbott, Mr. Walter Haskell, Mrs. Maggie Mills, and the Memorial Press for photographs of football season, of the Tech Tourney, and of Main Street in the 19th Century. Mr. David Montanari for basketball pictures. The New Bedford Standard Times for its picture of Peter Maccaferri. Mr. Howard Goodwin, who guided us in the purchase and use of our staff camera. Mr. Patrick Berry, who sketched the ads for Boyer's Paint and the Band. The administration and the faculty for their understanding when classes and schedules were interrupted for yearbook pictures. Peter Bongiovanni, our business manager, who worked beyond the call of duty to make the business section of the 1964 Pilgrim the most success- ful and the most interesting ever. Viola Harris for her excellent portrait of Mr. Berry and her Pilgrim sketch. Richard Maraghy and, again, to Peter for cheerfully chauffeuring us, at a moment's notice all over town. Mary Cook for hours spent in recording orders and payments and in compiling distribution lists for the 1964 Pilgrim. All the editors who worked to make the 1964 Pilgrim a fine yearbook. All parents who gave of their time, homes, patience, coke and potato chips. Our advertisers, sponsors, and friends for their continued support in' making the Pilgrim a reality.
