The absence of his friendly smile among us, his friends, has left an empty place throughout our school. Although his passing came quick- ly --- the memory of him shall not be so quickly for- gotten by his schoolmates. Therefore, we the graduating class of 1957 proudly dedicate this our yearbook to Ed Boring. Edward Boring 6 E F I Mr. O'Block 77 ' EL K Mr. Ament Mr. Riggs BUARIJ UF EDUCATIUN Mr, Pivik Mr. Stepek i f Mr McKenna Mr. Galvach Mr. McLaughlin Plum Borough High School owes much to its board of directors for making our school what it is today. Little do many of us realize how im- portant the school board is and what its many services are to the school and community, This very capable group of men has worked continuously to maintain the high standard of education in our district schools. Each one of us enjoys and uses many of the things within and around our school which have been provided by the board of education. In this brief para- graph we wish to express our great appreciation to our Board of Education. 7 EDITURS-IN-CHIEF Mr. Pascal Marquette Principal . vp ,Vg Aj PLLVA ,, X X Joy Ann Baker Secretary to the Supervising Principal -..,.-.0 'K v ilu-.. Laedleing Secretary, J. Smithg Vice President, W. Pekarekg Treasurer, P. Bracco CLASS 0F 1957 FRESHMEN 1953-54 We had finally found our way around Plum High School by the time we were freshmen. Fred Hartman, as president, proved himself an able leader in planning, with the help of William Pekarek, vice-president, and Judy Myers, sec- retary, our first skating party and a dance. SOPHOMORES 1954-55 As sophomores, we were beginning to work harder and harder for our coming prom. Our officers, Kathryn Brooke, president, Mary Jane Kozusko, vice-president, and Ruth Truax, sec- retary, did a fine job. A money-making project, selling autograph books, was quite successful, as well as another dance and skating party. JUNIORS 1955-56 This our junior year was one of much hard work and planning by our officers, Louise Laed- lein, president, Paul Patla, vice-presidentg and Judy Myers, secretary. Our play, Two Minutes To Go , made front-page headlines, and 'Lolli- pop Day' was a huge success. We held the Junior- Senior Prom at Hillcrest Country Club with the music of Tommy Carlyn's orchestra ending our never-to-be-forgotten junior year. ' 'w- . i 4 . SENIORS 1956-57 Finally we began editing the last page of our newspaper in this our senior year with officers Louise Laedlein, presidentg William Pekarek, vice-president, Janyce Smith, secretary, and Paul Bracco, treasurer. Our profits on a skat- ing party, dance, name cards, and other money making projects added to our treasury. Along with our Sadie Hawkins Dance , we initiated 'Tramp Day' in which the whole school participated. Our play, Cupid ln Pigtails , and the 'Coronation Ball' were both big successes, Our newspaper's last articles were, of course, about the senior banquet at the Holiday House and the Washington trip. We, the graduating class of 1957, have many wonderful memories of our years at Plum High School as we leave its familiar halls. -Q. The activities they have sponsored this past year have been a smashing success. Hard work, co- operation, and extensive thought on their part produced a prom that was a grand success. Their play, a de- lightful comedy, was enjoyed by all. The president elect was Art Smail who was assisted capably by Norma Kerr, vice president, and Pat O'Block, sec- retary. All things considered, these juniors have had a very prosperous year. In the coming year, hopes are high that the class of 58 will continue along this road of high ideals. These seventh and eighth graders also take part in intramural activities like basketball, volleyball, and others. Some of themtake part also in spelling bees of either borough, county, or state-wide importanceg they represent our school very well. We get many new and interesting ideas from these underclassmen which benefit our school and its members greatly. We know, as these seventh and eighth graders grow older and progress through the years, they will inspire and set a good example of well con- ducted leadership that will establish a pathway for the future seventh and eighth graders to follow. Under the supervision and guidance of the very competent Criterion editor, Phyllis Myers, the 1957 Criterion proved to be a memorable and well-organized yearbook. The Criterion business staff, headed by Kathleen Kropelak, gave their whole-hearted co-operation in securing the necessary funds for the yearbook's production. The yearbook theme, that of a newspaper, provided a center for careful consideration and planning. The artists and writers of the CRITERION were exacting in their newspaper reproductions and compositions and deserve a hearty congratulations for this eye-catching publication. With the completion of the 1957 Criterion the yearbook staff presents it to you, as a momento of your 1956-57 year at Plum. i X - s E S E ,yiap STUDENT COUNCIL First Row: P. Vores, D. Knopfel, B. STUDENT CUUNCIL Under the president, Fred Hartman, vice presidents, Marilyn Gaye, Barbara Kurimsky, and Darrell Knopfelg and the secretary, Meme Kerr, the rest of the Student Council very effectively governed Plum's students. During the semi-monthly meetings, the Council was kept busy and informed on all the school activities. Just a few activities included in the busy schedule were taking charge of the hall and bus patrols, of all the clubs, of counting activities points for the distribution of letters, of the annual Open House , of the trophy case, of soliciting money for various fund-raising organizations, and of the class elections. ln addition to their work, the Council found time for some relaxing social events which included a trip to the annual Student Council convention and the sponsorship of a dance, a skating party, and a bake sale. The Student Council, which worked very hard and cheerfully with their faculty sponsors, Miss Manning and Mr. Frack, is to be commended for the standards they have placed before the student body. O'B1ock Walk, don't run,' Don't push, and Get in line , were frequent orders heard from members of the hall and bus patrols. These students, who represent almost every grade in the high school, are authorized to give orders to fellow students. The orders are given so as to produce the utmost of safety and efficiency for everyone, regarding traffic in the halls and transportation on the buses. Students were warned against running in halls, pushing or crowdingwhile boarding buses, breading the lunch line, confusion in halls while classes were in session, and against unnecessary crowding and confusion during class changes. Along with Mr. Baker, the faculty sponsor, the members worked hard policing the students of Plum High. Upon detection of an offense, the members would report it to the proper authori- ties, and punishment was given to the law breakers. In this way, the students of Plum learned, for the most part, to obey the rules. A special salute should go to Mr. Baker and his patrols for effectively watching the hall and bus traffic during the 1956-57 school year. Under fine supervision, the club teaches its members the most essential methods in creating a better homelife. These essential methods are taught by the many activities of the club. ln the past year these activities have consisted of a hilarious initiation, followed by a skating party, and a clothing and food drive for the needy, all of which were very successful. Also the club worked very diligently making Christmas pins, earrings, and corsages that were sold to the students. They made field trips to Harrisburg and to different factories where they learned hints on sewing and cooking. Each year the Senior members of the F.H.A. compete with other schools in a national contest to find the National Homemaker of the Year. At the end of each year the senior members receive jackets depending on the amount of merits they have. They receive these merits according to the amount of work they have done in different committies. May we congratulate the members of the Future Home- makers of America and their fine sponsor, Mrs. Trettle, for the splendid work they have done in the past year. First Row: P. Stairs, D. Bevil, R. The organization is composed of agricultural students ofthe ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades and the faculty sponsor, Mr. Gismondi. Since most of the c1ub's members plan some sort of a future in farming, they study and participate in many of the valuable things that compose the vast knowledge of a real farmer. To supply funds to sponsor their many field-trips, the Future Farmers all joined together and worked hard making a calendar and selling seeds, cards, sweet corn, and wheat. The 40-odd members were also kept busy and well-informed by participating in many outside activities including a joint trip to Harrisburg for the annual Farm Show, a trip to Penn State to witness judging of sheep, swine and cattle, a trip to Cooks Forest, atrip to the annual F.F.A. Week at Penn State, and a trip to Clarion to study artificial breeding processes. During the fall months, Plum's F.F.A. also traveled to the County Fair and the Livestock Show at Harris Island. LIBRARY ASSISTANTS The Library Assistants Club is composed of efficient girls who spend their study halls inthe library helping Miss Mock, the club sponsor and head librarian. These girls are under the leader- ship of their capable officers, Ruth Truax, presi- dent, Bonnie Solida, vice president, and Cry- stallee Fellabaum, secretary-treasurer. The girls hold an annual initiation party for the new members of the club. These girls mend books, check them out, make out overdue slips, keep the magazines and books arranged properly, and make the library look cheerful by decorating it so colorfully. The display in the library for open house caught the eye of everyone who entered the library. lt was a big wagon wheel with the library as the hub of the school. The spokes around the hub were made up of the different types of books. The theme of the whole dis- play was the library's magic carpet, and it invited everyone to come aboard and join them at the library's Miracle of Books. First Row: M. Maxwell, K, Gilmore, B. The co-officers and Mr. McPau1, the club sponsor, gave helpful suggestions and assistance. The club is made up of about sixty members from grades ten, eleven, and twelve, who have successfully completed one or two years of Latin. The new members were inducted into the club in November. During the initiation day, students wishing to become Latin Club members were slaves to the old members, and they dressed in togas, A candlelight service took place in the evening making the inititation complete. ln order to raise funds for the big Latin Club Banquet, the club held a bake sale and a skating party. The banquet is the annual event eagerly anticipated by allof the members. Everyone dressed in togas, and the new members, acting as slaves, served the old members. This gala affair is always enjoyed by the entire club. As always, it ended the activities of the Latin Club until next year. First Row: J. Machen, P. Constant, M. Holley, B. Solida, U. Bonstedt, D. Kathryn Brooke was in charge of the installation ofthe new members. The French Club has a numberof requirements to be met before membership of admittance will be accepted. First of all a person must have at least a B average in French. The memorization of the Lord's Prayer, the 23rd Psalm and the allegiance to the American flag mustbefully memorized in French. Upon being admitted to the organization,a person is automatically a life member. The French Club of 1956-57 carried out the traditional objectives of attending a French opera, a French movie, and indulging in different and new French foods. All of the French Club meetings were held in the evenings. At each of the various meetings, there was a guest speaker and members participated in French folk dances and songs. All business procedures were conducted in a parliamentary fashion and were spoken in French. 61 '2 5 GIRLS' ATHLETIC ASSUCIATIUN The Girls' Athletic Association of PlumHigh School represents one of the most active and desirable organizations for Plum Senior High N girls. The able sponsor is Miss Capets, thejunior high gym teacher, who helped the G.A.A. very much by giving time and information towards raising money for the clubs needs. One important function of the G.A.A. is to raise enough money so that at the end of a school term a Mother and Daughter Banquet can be held in honor of the mothers of the mem- bers. Each month the staff of thirty four members worked under the able leadership of Kathryn Brooke and Kathleen Kropelak, editors, in pub- lishing the monthly edition. The editors and the remaining part of the staff did their very best in producing a good newspaper which kept up with the latest events of interest at Plum, The editors' cohorts this past year were Patty O'Block, Marty Maxwell, and Ruth Ann Dodds. ..,...........-..l L lp Ruth Ann was replaced at the end of the first semester as Ruth Ann moved from the Plum Borough district. Prior to this year the paper contained only eight pages, but the additional two pages allowed for new articles of interest to be published each month. One article that was of particular interest to the junior high was the Junior High Page. New and additional articles were the Poetry of the Month, Library Corner, and the Candid Corner. 41 First Row: M. Balest, R. Eckenrode, P. 0'Block, K. Kropelak,K. Brooke, N. Aurednik, J, Smith, M. Eligi- ble students must have achieved an A or B average during their years of high school. A faculty committee selects the juniors and sen- iors who have acquired all of the necessary qualifications. The emblem of this organization is the key- stone and flaming torch. The letters C, S, L, and S are at the base of the keystone. They represent the four chief principles of the society: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Ser- vice. The new members are inducted into the National Honor Society at acandlelight assembly program. The four symbols of C, S, L, and S are explained to the student body by the members. The aim of the Photo Club is to teach photographic technics such as printing and enlarging pictures. The members of the club learned quite a bit about photography from the many different films and demonstrations presented at their meetings. lts members made Photo-Christmas cards for the paSI Christmas which 0 in turn enabled them to learn photography. Under the direction of Jan Machen as president aided by Edna Mink as vice president, Judy Myers as secretary, and Carmen Giordano as treasurer, the club has become very popular. This year the club was very fortunate to have Mrs. Pridmore as their faculty sponsor. Here's wishing the club lots of luck in the future years at Plum High. First Row: S. Beverlin,N, Rossetti,G.
