Mr. MCJUhkll1 The Class of '42 Early in October, 1939, we entered Plum High as Sophomores. Having spent our first year of high school in various districts, we used most of our Sophomore year in becoming acquainted with our new classmates, our new teachers, and our new building. As Juniors, we began to pick up momentum. Class skates, a Skirt and Sweatcr Swing, and the Junior-Senior Prom in May were successful class projects. The athletic program was under way and members of our class were stars on all of thc teams. The National Honor Society selected some of us for awards. Now, as Seniors, we hold the center of Plum High's stage. Athletics, pictures, class, work on the annual, newspaper, clubs, and the Senior play, What a Life, kept us busy the entire year. More of our members were selected for the National Honor Society. May and the Prom, and then in June . . . Commencement week when we get our rewards and recognition for our work throughout our high school days. With graduation exercises, most of us suddenly realize that our school days are ended and we have begun a new phase of our lives. 17 ALLISON, VIRGINIA . . . X are FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS President , Wallace Nlcjunlcin Vice President ,, ,, Ruth Mycrs Secretary Mildred Bright Adviser , Miss l.cc Freshman Class History We Freshmen haven't made much history yet in Plum Township School. However, we're off to a flying start. Our first important job was to organize our class and select officers and a faculty adviser. Ar our organization meeting we elected Wallace Mcjunlcin as presidentg Ruth Myers, vice president, and Mildred Bright, secretary. The outstanding accomplishment of the year, however, was our purchase of United States Defense Stamps. ln almost every week's sales we purchased more stamps than any of the other classes. Another very successful project of ours was a Freshman Class Skate at the Trocarino in April. With these accomplishments behind us, we hope to keep on being successful and to do more than our share in the next three years of our school life. 32 Freshmen First Row, Left to Right-Shirley Allshouse, Dolly An- tonelli, Harry Babcock, Edward Baldi, Joseph Bar- to, Dolores Beighley, Mary Bobovsky, Hedwig Bo- gaty. Sure! that's the day Plum Hi l.ites is published. The staff, headed by Gladys Pierce as editor, deserves a nice hand of thanks for their untiring efforts in publishing an interesting paper as well as one which is entertaining. A permanent color scheme for the cover of the newspaper and the homeroom booster plan of sales were new developments of this year's staff. Underclassmen are being encouraged to join the staff and, under the leadership of Miss Mcjunkin and Miss Sohn, Plum Hi Lites expects to continue growing. Student Council This year's Student Council was the First to be organized under the present set-Llp. Twelve mem- bers, three each from the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes comprised the body. Miss Mcjunlcin was the sponsor and Marie Farabaugh was appointed from the commercial department to serve as secretary for the entire year. ln the latter part of january the entire council visited Hill City in Pittsburgh. One of their court trials and the worlc shop they operate proved interesting and worth-while. Cn March 28, five members represented the Council at the annual conference of the We-sterii Pennsylvania Association of Student Participation in School Government held at South High School in Pittsburgh. Different committees of this year's council have supervised hall patrol, set up a system for activity points awards. helped with home-room programs, and served as aides at the Forensic Contest. In two years this club has become the goal of ambitious students and the highest honor the school can bestow on mem- bers of the junior and Senior classes. This year our chapter's main project was the weekly sale of defense stamps. Meinbers also cooper- ated with Student Council in acting as aides during the Forensic contests held in our school this spring. Girls' Chorus This group of forty girls sing purely for the enjoyment they receive from singing. They entertain at a good many school functions with songs fitted for the occasion. Our activities for the school year consisted of a trip to the mountains, two slcates at the Trocarino, and a colored motion picture of Pennsylvania wild life. We are planning a dinner before the close of school and another trip to the mountains the day after school closes. College Club ln our high school a group of boys ancl girls meet each Wednesday to learn of colleges. This group, called the College Club, is composed of juniors and Seniors and is sponsored by Miss Williaiiis. Early last fall the club visited Westiiiinster, Cvrove City, and Slippery Rock Colleges. A spring trip included stops at Washington and Jefferson, Waynesburg, and Bethany Colleges. The purpose of these was to show the club members something of college life and to provide valuable first-hand informa- tion for these prospective college students. Snapshooters Club Watch the birdie!!!-Clickliand another snapshot is taken by one of our members. How will it turn out? Well, a Camera Club member has a chance to see just how a picture does turn outg develop- ing the film and printing pictures from the negatives. Organized under the guiding hand of Mr. Frack three years ago, the club has made much progress. The club has sponsored two snapshot contests in which all members participated. As a part of the meet- ing program the members were given instructions in the use and care of cameras and were taught how to develop and print pictures. In our night meetings we tried night photography, developing, print- ing, and enlarging, as shown us by Nick I-Iulawick. Craft Club The members of this club worked this year making belts, bracelets, necklaces, favors, and other things which might be useful to them. Many of these were the outcome of their trip to the Art lVIuseum in Pittsburgh. There have also been social gatherings with parties besides our business meetings. This organization is for those who are talented in making things and who wish to share and enjoy them with other people. iti-fl. Loft In Right .'im1.i Mug zuigvr. 'f Hobby Club The Hobby Club was organized in 1941 by Mr, I-laddick. lts purpose is to encourage and stimulate the interest of the students in various hobbies. Some of the more interesting hobbies were collection of war news, pins, stamps, pictures, recipes, shells, match tops, and others. Library Club This club was reorganized this year because of a new sponsor, Miss English. Under her leader- ship the members indexed new books, mended old books, made files for the different books and maga- zines in the library, and aided Miss English with classes of library study. Each month a member of the club gave a report on one of the newer books for the information and enjoyment of this service group. Un x,imlvi, umlvng Nllss lznglisll. lulecii 1 it 1 V . :V ilk . wit. Dramatic Club The Footlights Club had a very successful season during this past term. Interesting spealcers and entertainers made the monthly meeting both constructive and enjoyable. The club entertained the stu- dent body in assembly on three occasions with short plays. Members were encouraged to attend other stage productions through a cooperative ticket-purchase plan. The project of the year was the presenta- tion to the general public of three one-act plays produced entirely by members of the club. The plays were Mixed Datesf, Billy's Comingf' and Lonely Lady. The first two were partial fulfillments of a requirement to become regular club members. Mixed Dates was also presented at Calcmont High School, where it drew many laughs. Billy's Coming was presented to Penn High Schoolls Dramatic Club. All three plays were thoroughly enjoyed by all. All productions were made successful through the cooperation of the Stage Crew and Stage-Wood- craft Club. Baseball Plum Township I-1igh's first athletic championship was landed by our baseball squad in 1941. Coach Haddickls boys hung up a fine record in winning the championship of Section IX whose member schools were Franklin Township, Bell Township, Export, and Plum Township. The title was clinched when our team defeated Franklin Township 8-1 in a sectional play-off. In the W. P. I. A. L. play-offs our boys defeated Springdale 4-1 in the quarter finals but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Aliquippa to the tune of 8-5. The high spot of non-league games was a 10-0 shutout over New Kensington. Our team promises to be a strong contender again in 1942, despite the loss of such players as Horwatt, Mondale, Chizer, Tecak, Matto, Kornechuk, Zalac, Haddick, and F. Rusnock. Football Squad The loss of twelve lettermen, a tough schedule, and a new system of play were responsible for our team getting off to a slow start in the 1941 season. After losing live games, we broke into the winning column with a Z4-0 victory over our district rival, Verona. At Sharpsburg, playing in a steady downpour and on a held covered with several inches of water, we were held to a scoreless tie, although we made 20 first downs to our opponent,s none. We finished the season with a 7-O victory over Baldwin Township, a Class AH team. Inasmuch as several of our losses were at the hands of AAU teams and many of our players were having their first year in football, the 1941 season must be considered successful. The experience gained by our varsity players under Coaches Beckett and Mc-Iunkin should make us much stronger next season. In addition much was learned by the junior varsity squad, directed by Mike Mondale and Pete Korne- chuk. This group played several games and several of these boys are expected to make strong bids for positions in the starting lineup this fall. 56 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE - 1941 Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum , East Deere Pitcairn Springdale , ,, , ,. Basketball Varsity The highlight of the 1941-42 basketball season was our thrilling 28-25 victory over neighboring Penn Township, a Class AA school. Other wins and losses will probably soon be forgotten, but not this one. It in itself makes up for the mediocre record our team hung up playing in one of the toughest sections of the basketball league. Lack of experience was another important factor in this yearis record. Only three of last year's lettermen were eligible this year. As a result of this shortage of experienced players, Coaches Beclcert and Mcjunkin were forced to do much ex- perimenting throughout the season in hopes of finding a winning combination. With experienced players returning next year and several good prospects com- ing up from this year's junior varsity group, Plum Township's squad should be considerably strengthened for our next hardwood campaign. 58 Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum Plum BASKETBALL SCHEDULE Turtle Creek ,, Oakmont Penn sf. As members of the reserve squad, they get their hrst taste of basketball competition. Composed chiefly of Sophomores and Freshmen who have had little or none of the basketball training other schools are able to give in the grades, this team often looked pretty green, In all their games, however, the reserves kept Fight- ing until the final whistle, and the playing experience they gained will prove in- valuable in the future. Although this year's record looks very bad, several of the reserves showed much promise and are expected to strengthen next year,s varsity very much. 60 Front Row, Left to Right-James' Yvorra, Andy Chada, Mike Wallace, George Zalac, Mike Terifay, Andy Czuhiak, Joe Poklemba, Andy Vanery. Track Last spring the students of Plum Township had their first taste of track and field competition. The squad was coached by Mr. Endslow. In our early meets the inexperience of the boys was a great handicap and we suffered defeats at Penn Township and Etna. In our only home meet we closed the regular season with an easy victory at the expense of Verona High, the only Class B team on the schedule. The experience gained from last year's competition should greatly aid this year's squad which is coached by Mr. Beckett. 61 ADVERT!
