1985 Treasure Chest Treasure Chest -(trezh'er), n., a person or thing consid- ered valuable -(chest), n., a container for the safe- keeping of one's possessions -(trezh'er chest), n., a container for things of great value WE DEDICATE THE 1985 TREASURE CHEST TO. 5 PEOPLE In life, you meet different kinds of people; at PHS, you meet a very special group. PHS students are a proud group of young adults who, in their own way, enrich each other. There are the ones who color our world with wild and crazy clothes or with a personality that sparkles. There are the ones who study hard to place Plentywood on the academic list. There are the ones who physically and mentally devote themselves to making Plentywood a gold school in the Olympics of Sports. Then, there are the ones who teach, as well as learn, day in and day out. It takes a little of each to make a perfect school. Tanya Sundsted's clothes, Elaine Johnson's brain, and Frank D'Angelo's body about sum up the noticable qualities, but the hidden ones-the nurturing of the teachers, the support of the cheerleaders, the proms, and the balls, the banquets and the pep rallys, the plays and the parties, the everyday event of seeing each other are the real heart of the people in our school. We are a proud group, proud of each other and of ourselves. More importantly, we are a united group. The future PHS students have a tough act to follow, but if they are anything like the present ones, the pride of Plentywood High School will shine on forever. The officers were President- Marlene Thompson, Vice President and Historian- Melanie Steffins, Secretary-Treasurer- Sarah Mehl, Recreation Leader- Tracey Anderson. Through the 1984-85 school term, the Plentywood FHA mem- bers worked to gain money for their trip to the State FHA Convention in Billings, MT. Among their projects was the selling of advertisements to the local businesses for both the Girl's and Boy's Class C Tournament Booklets. Then the FHA members sold the booklets at both tournaments. On March 27th-29th, 1985, the Plentywood FHA members represented their chapter at the State FHA Convention in Billings, MT. The last money raiser that the FHA members completed was the selling of concessions when Plentywood High School hosted and 18 team track meet. But Bruce wasn't satisfied with this performance. He captured the office of State Re- porter and also got State Farmer and a Farm and Home Improvement Proficiency Award. Brad Wilson, Eric Morrison. (Not pictured: Catherine O'Toole) At the beginning of each school year, you buy a yearbook, get it signed by all your classmates, look through it a few times, and put it on your deslc at home. This whole process takes only a few days or possibly a week, but the making of a yearbook takes a whole school year. During the first semester, the year- book staff puts together a diagram of what pages the yearbook will have, individual pictures and some eroup shots are taken, but most of the work doesn't begin until the second semester. Then the fun (and work!) really begins! The staff is kept busy picking out pictures, making first drafts and final copies, writing copy, and cnecking things over before sending each page into the publishers. Sometimes things really pile up at the end of the year, and the staff ends up working after everyone else has already left for their summer vacations. Just seeing the product of the previous year's time, effort (and headaches!), however, make it all worthwhile! Plentywood High School has always had many partici- pants in its sports. From football and basketball to track and golf, spirit among the athletes has been one of the most important elements in Plentywood's success. Athletes enjoy traveling to other towns and competing with other athletes. They also make many lasting friends, not only from the closeness of the Wildcat team, but many from the towns which they compete with. Not only do students learn in a classroom, they also learn in the athletic program. Getting along with others, working for success, and learning how to lose and win gracefully are important in a student's future life. What makes PHS special? Spirit among the students! Caring and sharing in both victory and defeat show the loyalty among our student body. But most of all, there is the special feeling of pride which can be felt by anyone who enters our school. 'Now, here is what you have to do. - Mr. Smith GET THAT REF! 52 The 1984 football season was a rebuilding year with many pitfalls obscuring the way. The team had only four return- ing seniors to lead the younger players. This was done encouragingly, but alas, the season ended with a four win- four loss record. We interviewed the seniors about their feelings concerning their last football season. — Joe McGlothlin DAVE DID YOU ACCOMPLISH THE GOALS THAT YOU SET AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON? Yes, I thought I always gave 100% and I wanted to play the best games of my football career as a senior. SAM, ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE WIN LOSS RECORD? No . . since I was a senior I wanted to excel and go for the titles. We got a few bad breaks which cost us. These led to our short season. In 1985, the first Plentywood High School Girls' Volleyball Team was organized under Coach Mary D Angelo and Asst. Coach John Bechtold. Although the thirteen girls on the squad had a short season, they gained a lot of experience. Monica Morstad interviewed some of the girls on the squad. EMBER, DO YOU ENJOY VOLLEYBALL? Yes. FOR WHAT REASONS? I learned more and became more interested in the sport. 1 also liked it because volleyball is a game of team work and I learned to work with the rest of my teammates. TONYA. DO YOU THINK VOLLEYBALL WAS A GOOD CHOICE FOR THE NEW GIRLS' SPORT? 1 think it's a good sport because it not only helps you learn to work with people, but it improves your speed and coordination. We're all sooooo involved in this game! We wish all the girls the best of luck and success in the seasons to come! 60 Golf This year's golf season opened be- fore the snow drifts had time to melt. In spite of this, the PHS team did quite well during the season. 62 63 Sports Candids THE YEAR IN SPORTS The year was full of information. This year was like a cup. All the teams did great. So here I'll sum them up. On many football fields. The football team did tromp. On many foreign courts. The boy's basketball team did romp. On many a foreign track. The track team did land. And as for the girl's basketball team. Is there another winning season at hand? And for newcomers. For girls that is all. There is a new sport in town. And that is Volleyball. Next year is different. Next year is new. Next year's athletics, Are just for you. The school day goes from eight to four, but there are still sixteen hours more! When the bell rings at 3:40, it sends many teenagers out of the school's strict confines to their own world where the name of the game is fun. For some, 3:40 means practice, but for those who are not involved in sports, it means a time for a variety of other activities. Students leave the parking lot in their cars toward many destinations; such as, home to study for a test or to do homework; to a rousing game of Walleyball at the Bull Pen; or to just cruise the streets to find someone to gossip with at the Mon Dak, The Four Winds, or D'Angelo's. Activities range from aerobics to vids, from volunteer work to school activities to money making jobs. Whatever your pleasure, there is always something to do in those short sixteen hours away from school. Fads let us express ourselves and show the different sides of our personalities. We wanted a Fads page in our 1985 yearbook, so when we seniors have our 20th class reunion, we can look back and say, I used to wear that?” or, Is that what was in back then? We though it would be fun to refresh you on some of the things that were in in 1985. In music, Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. album and Tina Turner's Private Dancer album topped the charts and catapulted Bruce and Tina to fame once again. Madonna became the Marilyn Monroe of pop music with her blonde locks and sexy image. In movies, Eddie Murphy's Beverly Hills Cop made it big as did Harrison Ford in Witness . Ghostbusters,' starring Bill Murray and Dan Akroyd, became one of the biggest money makers ever. On television, The Cosby Show became one of the top rated shows of the year and Bobby Ewing ended his seven year role on Dallas by being hit by a car. Will he come back? Only time will tell. Looking at clothes, neons were definitely in! Green and yellow fingernails became frequent sights, as did hot pink anklets and sunglasses - tinted ones, dark, dark ones and even shades called Venetian. They may range from Honor Society students to athletes who made the conference team to students who have accomplished things outside of school and extracurricular activities. All of you have probably performed some outstanding feat during the year, and we regret that there is not enough room to put each and everyone of you in this section. There are times when a traveller doesn't know how far he has gone or how much further he has left to go; but one must remain faithful and keep sailing on. It is in the storm that our faith and strength are proven to ourselves and to others. Changing winds may take us to places where we have no desire to go, but afterwards we see benefits that we might not have otherwise encountered. It makes it all worthwhile to come to the place of smooth sailing with clear skies, sunshine, and soft, gentle breezes. Even though the perfect and pleasant days may not come as often as we'd like, it's the anticipation of them that gives us hope and keeps our spirits high. Our journey is made of ups and downs, bright and dark days, joys and sorrows; but no matter what happens, we must have the courage to just set the course and sail on!
