FOOTBALL 1976_ All Conference: Roger Ward-second offensive and defensive guard, Donald Huffman-second offensive running back, John Laney-first offensive wide receiver and second defensive halfback, Chris Ruby-first defensive tackle. The 1975 football Wild- cats opened their season with an impressive win over an old rival, the Scobey Spar- tans. The Cats raced to a 32-0 halftime lead and with all suited players seeing ex- tensive action chalked up win number 1, 32-14. The first conference game proved to be a disappointing loss to the eventual conference champions from Sidney, 26-14. Trailing 19-0 at half the Cats dominated the second half and ultimately proved to be the only con- ference team that moved the ball against the strong Sidney defence. In the next three weeks injuries deci- mate what originally was a strong Cat eleven and the Wildcats lost to Glendive 46-28, Wolf Point 19-14, and Glasgow 50-6. Down, but not out, the courage and dedication of the locals fi- nally paid off in a confer- ence win over Poplar 22-16. This was the Homecoming game for Plentywood and proved to be one of the better games of the year. Again playing a much larger opponent, Miles City even for a half, superior numbers and injuries led to a 44-6. defeat, (cont. pg. 19) Most Inspirational: Roger Ward and John Laney Co-Captains: Russell Bell and Don Huffman 17 Brian H. -Here we go again. Football was proven to be a very difficult sport for the Wildcats in Class A ranks as numbers are just not available to compete against schools three and a half times our enrollment. Yet the boys who have stayed with the program have certainly competed well. Championship records have alluded the Wildcate foot- ballers in Class A competition but championship characteristics and attitudes have been manifest by the boys who have represented their school and com- munity with pride and dedication. Coach Bob Lowry 19 Sitting: Ramona Walter, Marilee Wilson, Jill Rutherford, Gail Chandler, Lila Marshall, Kneeling: Kathy Shackelford, Lisa Shields, Kathy Veis, Jill Abbenroth, Tracy Syme, Cynthia Sorensen. Standing: Kim Holt, manager; Robin Selvig, Coach. The Plentywood High School girls' basketball team ended their 1975 season with a much improved record of 10 wins and 10 losses. The 5 and 5 conference record was good enough for a fourth place finish and the two wins in the tournament were good enough for a fourth place tourney finish. The efforts of four seniors will be greatly missed in the 1976 season. They are Gail Chandler, Jill Rutherford, Kathy Veis and Ramona Walter. Gail was the Wildcats leading scorer with 10 points a game and Kathy the leading rebounder with 8 rebounds per game. Girls athletics are growing and improving all across the country and Plentywood High is no exception. Look for the Wildcats 1976 season to be even a bigger success. We had 14 lettermen able to return to a team which had previously posted an honorable 6-8-0 record. However, seven of those lettermen didn't show up (5 were seniors), and one more was injured. The group that was left definitely had their work cut out. I'm sure their hopes and goals were shat- tered early, as far as the team goes. The indivi- duals that were left were athletes in all senses of the word. They, for the most part, were very young and inexperienced, especially to compete in this Eastern A league. They practiced very hard, dedicated themselves most earnestly, and each came up with many rewarding experiences. Wayne Kandas, Larry DeTienne, Brian Cooper, Chris Ruby, and Mickey Borah each had reputable win- ning seasons. There are 15 possible lettermen for next year's squad. Should more individuals show up and should the student body get behind them, they will have a most rewarding and successful season! I am proud to have been a Wildcat Wrestling Coach, and thankful to have had the fine indivi- duals that were on my team this past season. Our coach said we didn't have to share ! 26 Previously, we had been the brides maid so it was really a great thrill to be the bride. 1976 will always be a memorable year for me. it was the year of the Wildcats. I am very proud of this group of boys. They had talents and they displayed them well. Yet all of this could have gone to waste if the boys had not been willing to sacrifice individual glory for team glory. We had tremendous support from our cheer- leaders, pep squad, pep band, school, and local fans. This also was a very significant factor to our success. Coach Zoonie McLean Kneeling: Steven Johnson, Tom Robertson, James Ruby, Brian Cooper, Rick Smolak, Craig Foss. Standing: Coach Ed Ternes, Doyle Johnson, Wayne Kandas, Kenney Heppner, Larry DeTienne. A slow sort of country, said the Queen. Now, HERE, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that' —from ALICE IN WONDERLAND The first season of cross country competition for PHS was highlighted by the continual improvement of the harriers during the six-week season in the fall. Plentywood attended meets at Frazer, Flaxville, Scobey and Glasgow, finishing third at Flaxville and second at Scobey. During the Scobey meet, Larry DeTienne turned in the season's best individual effort with a 14:42 time and second place for the 2? mile course. DeTienne also had the best time overall with a 12:59 mark at Frazer. History will be made this fall when Plentywood hosts its first cross country meet. With a bit of perseverance, the Wildcat runners should improve upon their initial performances and be competitive with all area teams. 29 GIRLS’ Girls' Track-1976 Girls' track in 1976 was truly a learning experience for everyone involved. The most important lesson learned was that there is a vast difference between those who talk a good race and those who work to run a good race. To the ten girls who started and quit - it can honestly be said we were better off with- out you. To those five who stuck it out, through the bad and the worst, . . . con- gratulations, it was terrific to work with you and great news to find out that some people do have the courage to try. This year was the first year for Intramu- ral Basketball and also Intramural Volleyball, which began in April. Both boys and girls participated in both sports. A high percentage of the student body took part and it is to be hoped that interest remains high for the following years. 34 sium uoiu M UOSJjpufi 03iU3$ . . .Homecoming Court 1975 Are you puny people supposed to be our FOOTBALL TEAM? Some Can Even Make Me Cry. Just Like Before, It's Yesterday Once More. From Yesterday Once More Sung by The Carpenters For the Seniors of '76, the past year was full and rewarding. To start the year off in the fall, there was the Senior Class Play. It Runs In The Family involved almost one- third of the Senior Class and there was not much time for preparation. Shortly after the play, it was time for Homecoming. The Wildcats were victorious over the Poplar Indians. The Class of '76 won the megaphone for the yelling contest for the fourth consecutive year. The Seniors also won the float award. The float was a red, white, and blue liberty bell with the motto, The Spirit Rings In '76. On December 27, the Senior Class put on the Christmas Ball. The band was Whiplash and the ball was well attended. Then, of course, there was basketball season. The Seniors won the pep jug for the best decorated hallway and also won the yelling contest again. 1976 was the first year Plentywood has ever taken State Basketball Championship, and we are very proud to say the team included seven Senior Wildcats. For most Seniors, 1976 will hold many memories- hectic, exciting, happy, tearful, unforgettable memories. 1976 The Year of the Seniors The Year of the Cats Mt GOOO Kf£ .JEANNIE ANDERSON Homecoming Candidate; Girls1 Gymnasics 1; Chorus 1,2,3; Honor Society 3,4; Speech and Drama 4; Pep Club 1,2,3; FFA 1,2; Jr. Class Play; Sr. Class Play; Girls' State Alt.
