Junior and Senior Class Presidents Bill Walkowski and Dave Maier were prom- inent in the evening’s festivities, as were Dr. Tom Lidahl, featured speaker, Father O'Hanlon, and Debbie Lamphear and Lynn Berland, readers of the Class Prophecy. Entertainment was provided by the Double Octet under the direction of Richard Bratton. Dinner was ably served by the FHA girls. And so another year at PHS drew rapidly to a close. 29 The Midnight Hour 31 Graduation: “Individualism Is Our Path to the Future” Wildcats, the Best! In our first year of Class A competition only a few unlucky bounces of the ol' pigskin stood between us and the cham- pionship. As it was we finished with a respectable 3-5 record. For a team that was plagued with injuries--as well as suffering a drought of the traditional breaks --this group came back each week with character, courage and re- newed dedication. The year was highlighted by season ending 16-6 victory over the perennial football power, Glendive. A stingy defense, a ball control offense, and a sound kicking game matured in this final contest to end the season on a positive note. The young men that represented Plenty- wood in its first competitive Class A football season are to be commended for their efforts. Not only did they set a precedent of successful effort for the other sports in this and the years to follow, but they sustained a poise after repeated frustrations that ennabled them to end the season as winners--just as they'd begun it. 35 Les and Terry: All-Conference 36 37 Plentywood, Cats—Far Out! Front, L-R: Doug Veis, Les Marsh, Brian Holtan, Larry O'Toole, Brock Hjelm, Mike McLean. Row 2: Mr. Lowry-Coach, Ron Schultz-mgr. Randy Rice, John Laney, Doug Maier, Kevin O'Toole. Row 3: Jim Hibbert, Robert Tange, Brad Hjelm. The 1973-74 Wildcat basketball team was a melting pot of the old and the new with returning starters Brock Hjelm, Les Marsh, Larry O'Toole, and Brian Holtan, letterman Mike Mc- Lean (who missed the 72-73 season because of injury), Scobey transfer Doug Veis, and sophomore Robert Tange pro v.jing the team nucleus. The Cats came on in their initial Class A season to finish as one of the A powers in Montana. Only a one point loss in the consolation finals of the Divisional Tournament denied the Wildcats a challenge for the right to attend the State Tournament. Although they were denied the oppor- tunity to attend the State Tourney, this team finished the season as a cohesive, aggressive unit. Lacking total all-around talent, each player contributed his individual strength to the team effort. The result was a fine 15-12 record with no game being lost by more than ten points. This team had the distinction of being the only team in Montana to defeat both Poplar (Class A Champion) and Sidney (Class A Runner-up). In addition to a winning performance on the court, this group of ball players displayed an equally winning citizen- ship off the court. This resulted in the receipt of the trophy for the best sportsmen in the conference. Traditionally this award goes to the losing team with the best attitude; however, by winning the award Plenty- wood's Wildcats exemplified winning citizenship as well as winning basket- ball. Evan Erickson 4th at State Pat Clawson State Champ Terry Fink 4th at State 45 A lot of people have asked me to evaluate Plentywood's 1973-74 season. Informing an answer to their questions, I took the following thoughts into consideration. The team had numerous obstacles to conquer before achieving any of their goals. Some of these were: 1) a lot of returning seniors, which isn’t always in one’s favor: 2) adapting to a new coach; 3) being in the same division as perennial state wrestling powers Glasgow and Miles City; 4) being one of the smallest A schools in the state; 5) keeping up with the rigorous A scheduling; 6) creating a solid backing of underclass- men wrestlers; 7) developing the necessary tough discipline needed mentally and physically; 8) setting goals high enough and working towards them. Some of the accomplishments of the wrestlers were; 1) creating an infant tremor of enthusiasm in their wrestling fans; 2) a 3rd place finish in a tough Kenmare tourney; 3) an 11-2-1 dual meet record; 4) a tie for 2nd place in the Eatern A conference standings; 5) a 2nd place finish in the Eastern A Divisional Tournament; 6) 8 State Tournament qualifiers; 7) a 9th place finish in the State Tournament; 8) Two State Tourna- ment 4th place winners in Evan Erickson and Terry Fink; 9) the Wildcats' first State Champion in PAT CLAWSON! With all this in mind I must say it was a successful season. However, with a lot of work and sweat it too can be improved upon. Maybe we'll do it in the 1974-75 season. Cross your fingers.
