SAND GRAINS “High school is many things to each of you. First, it is an in- stitution of learning.” But it’s more than that. Lots more. It is little things like . . . Walking through the halls and smiling at kids you might never see again after graduation, and it’s watching an ant crawl across a patch of floor in the chemistry room and then disap- pear into a crack in a board. Squirting water and blowing up test tubes in lab. Yelling at a basketball game until your throat hurts and then crying because you’re so proud of your team — even if they lose. And it’s wearing long underwear under your formal to the Homecoming game. It is other things too . . . It is smelling pizza from the lunch room at 11:30 while you’re starving, and it’s starting on your term paper two days before it’s due. It is running your stockings on the swivel chairs in the chem- istry room or wiping grease on your clothes and wondering how much dust there must be on top of Mr. Gackle’s ducks and eagles. “Secondly, it is an institution of discipline.” It is throwing paper airplanes in band and sticking gum wrappers in the tuba. It is sleeping in study hall, poking napkins in chicken wire and reading MAD magazines at committee meetings. It is posing with a pasted grin on your face for a lady who’s taking your picture, and it’s waving “Hi” to Louie while he shovels the sidewalk. It is memorizing Henry VIII’s five wives and trying to grasp the meaning of existentialism. It is searching for the truth. It is scraped gum, bitten fingernails, admit slips, lost pencils, Mr. Johnson’s voice, and Mr. Gustin’s hieroglyphics. It is the American flag in the breeze.
