We have endeavored to make this annual a worthy achievement and it is our hope that now and in future years, it will stand as a symbol re- calling many pleasant memories of Plentywood High School. 2 DEDICATION To Mr. Robert Casey and Mr. Clifton McLean in apprecia- tion of their splendid and unceasing work, not only in coach- ing, but also in teaching, the Senior Class dedicates this 1956 edition of The Treasure Chest. Under these leaders, the teams enjoyed a successful sea- son. More important than victories, however, are the ex- amples of team work, fair play, good sportsmanship, and leadership which these coaches have instilled in the lives of the players and students alike. The Senior Class wishes to thank Mr. Casey and Mr. Mc- Lean for their personal contribution to sports and teaching. 3 CONTENTS Administration Seniors Underclassmen Organizations Athletics Advertising BOARD OF EDUCATION Left to Right: James Bussinger, Harold DeSilva, Einar Klofstad, Donald Peterson, Sam Sprague, Waldemar Lane, Margaret Nelson, Joe Eggen, John Kohler, Elmer Nielsen. These people started their journey to the top. The first years of the journey were years of trial, which were eased as they took part in various Thanksgiving, Christ- mas, and variety programs. It was not easy, and some, too weak to keep up the steady pace, were leftbythe wayside. However, there were other expeditions in pursuit of the summit that joined the rest of the group as they traveled upward. The days went by rapidly and soon just four years remained. Many of the boys took part in athletics and F.F.A. activities, while the girls be- came member s of T.N.T. and F.H.A. Meanwhile the ones with a musical inclination joined Band and Chorus. The Junior year saw them eager to leave their impressions when they presented the play Harvey and hosted the Junior-Senior Banquet and Spring Prom. During the last yea r of the journey they added many accomplishments by producing the Treasure Chest yearbook, the Wildcat school paper , the Christmas Ball, and the annual Senior Play. There are but eleven of the original thirty-two who remained to reach the summit in PHS. They are: Craig Christensen, Martin Herman, Harry Hilyard, Douglas Kienitz, Lois Kress, Doreen Norman, Donna Simonis, Adrienne Syme , Cherryl Wagner , Shirley Willard , and Johnette Whittaker. The expedition proved to be long, but it has been a happy experience which provided memories that none of the Seniors of 1956 will ever for- get. SNEAK DAY Glamour puss. Interested spectators. Can-can boy. Lois looks comfortable. 23 Buddies to the end. Sleepy time girl. CLASS PROPHECY As I arrive at Plentywood High School, it is a beautiful evening in May, 1966, just ten years after our graduation. The new high school, now located just west of Lincoln Field, was completed only last year and has been chosen as the site of the reunion of the class of 1956. Immediately upon entering I am greeted by GARY WOLLAN, superintendent of schools. He has assigned two of the PHS faculty members, LAVINA JOHNSON and MARILYN GOETZINGER, to give us a guided tour of the institution. After finally coming to the spacious auditorium, I am welcomed by MARLIS and MARLENE CROSSON who have agreed to act as hostesses for the evening. They are co-owners of the Plenty- wood Beauty Salon. Our master of ceremonies for the reunion is DOUGLAS KIENITZ, the veteran sportscaster, who has handled the Cleveland Indians' games for the past three years. CARL IVERSON is also in radio work, being an engineer for the Mutual Broadcasting Company. Music is beingprovided by GENE ENGHUSEN and his western dance band. ADRIENNE SYME, our guest vocalist, recently starred in the Broadway production, Montana”. That song sounds familiar. Oh yes, it is one composed by our English instructor, Mrs. Bernadine Palutzke. This song, Who Will Buy My Potatoes? now ranks third on the hit parade. Sitting at one of the tables is JOHNETTE WHITTAKER, now dean of nurses at the Mayo Clinic. With her is RUBY SHEFFER, a nurse in the surgical department. Talking with them are Mrs. Danny King, formerly MARIE JOHNSON, and Mrs. Franklin Lund, the former SHIRLEY WIL- LARD, wife of a prosperous Outlook farmer. Speaking of farmers, 1 see RAY BRENTESON, GERALD BUDKE, and RALPH MELLE. There must still be money in farming as all three drove up in 1966 model cars. Before dinner, refreshments are served by TRUMAN STAGEBERG, who now owns his own distributing agency. Our banquet has been planned by KAY TANGE, who is employed by General Mills as the new Betty Crocker. EDITH BRENTESON, now an interior decorator, has handled the decoration of the auditorium. CHERRYL WAGNER, owner of the local greenhouse, has furnished the flowers for the occasion. In strolls BEVERLY DAHL, a dress designer, and her model, DOREEN NORMAN. They will leave for Paris tomorrow. Close behingthem are two local grocers, HARRY HILYARD and DICK FRENCH, managers of Kisler's Market and the Red Owl, respectively. Our announcer now asks for our attention and tells us that a telegram has been received from Mrs. Tom Goff, the former LOIS KRESS, who is located in northern Canada and will be unable toattend. JUDY PALUTZKE, who has set up housekeeping in Wyoming, is also notin attendance. As we proceed, Doug introduces the celebra ties attending. They are GARY Cooper KNUDS- VIG and John WAYNE THOMSEN. They recently starred in the movie, Trouble at Box Elder Creek . GARY JOHNSON, a deep sea diver, has also performed in motion pictures. He served as a stunt man in Glub-Glub . Two fellows traveling a great distance to attend now enter. They are MARTIN HERMAN, an engineer located in Peru, and MARLOW VESTERBY, who is doing agricultural work in the same country. They have covered the last leg of their journey on the K-Line Airlines, owned and operated by RODNEY KANNING. VALERIE WILSON is a stewardess on the Plentywood-Great Falls flight. Also engaged in the transportation field are ODELLE SYME, who runs a taxi service between Plentywood and Raymond, and OLAF JOHNSON, superintendent of the Soo Line Railroad. Just arriving from Helena are BARBARA McCALL, secretary to the governor, and HARRY SANO, head of the state's National Guard. Their chauffeur is DENNIS WHITE. Chatting at a corner table are DONNA SIMONIS, who has retired from the teaching profession to raise football players, and Mrs. Wayne Niehuus, formerly MAGGIE EVANSKAAS, wife of a draftsman. The Niehuuses are living in California. Asl strikeup a conversation with severalof my former classmates, a voice pages Dr. Christen- sen. That is I, and patients come first, so I guess I'll have to be going. 24 CRAIG CHRISTENSEN GRADUATION The singing seniors. THE TIME OF A STUDENT 8:50--Get-up time. ROW 3; Rodney Kanning, Carl Iverson, Mar- low Vesterby, stage hands. Synopsis of Play On April 10, the Senior Class of Plentywood. under the direction of Miss Osta Madsen, presented Mark Twain's play A Double Barrelled Detective Story. Arthur Stillman (Gary Wollan) a young man possessed of third-dimensional qualities, is sent by his mother, Mrs. Stillman (Donna Simonis) to Hope Canyon, a mining community in Colorado, to track down and punish his father's murderer, Jacob Fuller (Truman Stageberg). Here. Archy falls in love with Rosemary Hillyer (Lois Kress) owner of the local hostelry. Archy locates his man, almost succeeds in ruining him, and then discovers that he has been wrong in his judge- ment. Meanwhile, the innocent victim has fled town and Archy must find him and make restitution. In the meantime. Fetlock Jones (Dick French) a cowardly orphan who claims to be related to the great Sherlock Holmes, has conceived a plan to destroy his employer, Flint Buckner (Gary Knudsvig) a greedy, ill-tempered, and abusive miner. Under the urging of Sadie (Doreen Norman) Fetlock kills the old miner, just at the time when who should arrive in camp but the great Sherlock Holmes (Craig Christensen) himself. Thus it is that Sherlock Holmes is on hand to conduct the investigation in his scientific fashion. He mistakenly accuses Rosemary Hillyer's brother Sammy (Doug Kienitz) of dynamiting Flint Buckner’s cabin. Fortunately, Archy returns in time to exonerate Sammy and pin the murder on Fetlock. Archy also discovers that Flint Buckner is the very scoundrel who, years before, had killed Archy's father. Other characters in the cast were Nancy Palmer (Ruby Sheffer), Mrs. Stillman's housekeeper; Amanda Sink (Johnette Whittaker), a gossipy neighbor; Injun Hattie (Judy Palutzke); Pat Riley (Wayne Thomsen), the sheriff; Ham Sandwich (Harry Sano), a good-natured miner; and Mrs. Hogan (Marie Johnson), the camp washerwoman. r 0 THE TOP TEN Craig -- Takes Two to Tango Kay— You and Me (Sometimes.) us.) JUNIOR PLAY Synopsis of Play On November 22, the Plentywood High School Junior Class, under the di- rection of Miss Osta Madson, presented the well-known stage play, Cheaper by the Dozen. Father (Dennis Wigmore) about to leave for a lecture at the World Manage- ment Conference in Europe, knew that he hadn't long to live, for Dr. Burton (Cur- tis Overby) had told him. He arranged to have Anne (Sharon Evenskaas) graduate after the first semester. Miss Brill (Karen Listoe) was giving tests to determine just how many of the children could advance. Ernestine, Lillian, and Martha, portrayed by Pat Kleppen, Ardelle Syme, and Lorraine Jensen, respectively, had taken the tests. When Anna came home from a date with Larry (Dwight Wilson) they told her the answers to the test. A former boy friend, Joe Scales (Russell Long) had told many of the boys that Mr. Gilbrethwas an old-fashioned man that wouldn't let his girls go out without a brother on dates. The play moved smoothly as the boys, Frank, Jackie, Dan, Fred, and Bill (Gary Klofstad, Ralph Jensen, Larry Lidahl, Dick Berglund, and Harvey Ander- son, respectively) assumed the responsibilities of running the household. As Anne was taking the test, she slipped up and gave Miss Brill the opportunity of exposing the Gilbreth family as cheats. As the time approached when Father was to leave for Europe, Anne took another test that cleared her name. In last minute preparations, Mrs. Fitzgerald (Jo Ann Thomsen) fixed alunchfor Father. Before he left, he installed Mrs. Gilbreth (Sharon Soderquist) as head of the family council.
