His wisdom, his encouragement, his wit, and his infectious laugh endeared him to us. We held the highest respect for this man who iniiuenced us so deeply, as tutor and teacher in math, helper in French, and advisor in GO. Above all, we will remember Mr. Ely for the friendship he gave us. He offered his counsel generously for our troubles in our personal lives and in school. Our problems and thoughts con- cerned him as much as his own. We wish sin- cerely to pay tribute to this beloved man whose ebullient spirit touched our lives with richness and with joy. Dedication When We entered high school, we met you in the annex. The excitement you felt for your subject made learning much easier. Your jaunty stride and friendly grin became a familiar sight to all of us. When you moved to the science wing, you put the same zest and organization into your new subject. We appreciate the attention and interest you have shown each of us as individuals. With affection we dedicate our yearbook to you- 'clngeniousn Edwin Heideman K- L ,lk .. : . Dear Seniors: A ten year old boy from Briarcliff wrote to Congressman Richard Ottinger of Pleasantville offering to help in efforts to improve the Hudson River. Impressed by his interest, Representative Ottinger forwarded a copy to President Johnson. I suspect that by now John Schmelke of 257 Sleepy Hollow Road has received a reply from the President. I wish that one or more Pleasantville Seniors could have been moved to say I wonder if there is anything I could do to help. Is there anything I could do to help? Somehow I believe that many of you felt that way when you were ten. Do you still feel this way about things? Wouldn't it be a line world if we all felt so? Somewhere between ten and twenty too many of us absorb from others and from our experiences in trying to help the attitude expressed by What's in it for me?- What will I get out of it? It has been said There is nothing commoner than talent among modern men and nothing rarer than ambition, industry, and faith. If the author of these words had added willingness to help, I believe his words would have been even more true. Put talent, ambition, industry, faith, and helpfulness into any project and I predict that it will be done. Is there anything I could do to help? asks for leadership. It is from you that we look for this in future years. To become a leader one must have had experi- ence in helping others who lead. Only from this comes the support of others when you earn the leadership role. I predict for the young man from Briarcliff a useful life, especially if he continues to have the desire to help. I commend to you the spirit which is expressed in What can I do to help? Use it at home, in church, in college, in your vocation, and live a full and useful life. I've almost convinced myself that I should try it too. Best wishes from YM- hw Superintendent of Schools Harold Davey Board of Education '? TP ' li Q' I 1 'i sRsN F. Gillette, V. McGrath, G. The main business on the agenda at meetings is approving budgets and passing bill after bill. Members are busy selling GO cards, coffee, hotdogs, cokes, and candy at Panther games. Although the club has not been able to provide PHS with an apple machine after four years of struggle, we appreciate its effort. By supporting Varsity and J.V. Athletics, the Green Lantern, Girls' Sports, the Drama Club, and many other activities, the GO keeps the pride in our alma mater high. mppnu-pu Row 1 K Knapp, D. Marquinez, M. Beem, G. Arens, A. The an- nual Rye on the Rocks was complete with banner competition. On Student's Day, another prime activity run by the S. G., the students took over the school. Other events were the fabulous Spring Festival, the hole-in-one contest, and Button Day. Led by Mike, Judy, Margie, and the Beattie team, the NAC has been busy selling Panther decals, buttons, and rooter bus tickets, and re- ceiving brain waves to bolster the elan at PHS. ationol Honor Society Is NHS a service organization or an honorary organization? . . . The AFS club welcomed Jussi Tim- gren of Finland to Pleasantville this year. In his honor the club and the Stu- dent Government proclaimed a Fin- nish Day. Jussi was presented with a PHS class ring and a Finnish flag pur- chased for the school. In connection with the AFS's aim, to further under- standing among the peoples of the world, the club held a student weekend for the foreign students in the area to give the people in the community a chance to become acquainted with them. American Field Service T. V. Tips This year Mrs. Lomont, Mrs. Kiefer, Miss Nulty and the members of the TV Tips have put out weekly schedules of television programs which would interest the students in different fields of study. The television has been used as an additional exposure to studies through TV Tips' recommendations for such programs as: The Twentieth Century, some TV productions of plays, sports and news casts, and several additional TV specials, Librar Club 3? s i W .Sm N.,- The members of the Library Club meet on alternate Fridays to discuss books which they have read. With Mrs. Henken they have learned about qualities of the successful teacher and objectives in teaching. Activities, including field trips, bake sales, holiday projects, and the Teachers' Recognition Day Luncheon, have made 1965-66 a mem- orable year for the F.T.C. Continuing with its fine record, Pleasantville's Math Club scored well in this year's contests. Coached this year by Mrs. Habl and Mrs. Wolf- son, the club traveled to monthly meets after school and made a very good showing at all of them. Looking forward to next year, the club hopes to keep up their line scores. Future Teachers Club Planning and Leadership Committee Row 1: Mrs. Bradbury fadvisorb, B. Lockwood, P. DeVito, C. Morabito. Working with Mrs. Bradbury, the Council has presented several assemblies on travel such as Quentin Keynes, World Traveler , and Jussi Timgren's assembly on Finland. One of the important tasks of the Assembly Council is preparing holiday as- semblies. This year one of the most memorable programs was the Winter Holidays Assembly, utilizing student talent in the Senior Chorus and a dance pantomime presented by Joanne Sager. Under junior leadership, the Green Lantern made a remarkable come-back after its two dif- ficult years. It was bolstered by an iniiux of enthusiastic freshmen and a few hard-working seniors. Together, their combined efforts were responsible for the publication of six issues. During the month of March the advisor, Miss Macfarlane, and several members of the staff attended the annual Columbia Press Conference at Columbia University. Tension mounted when the hu Huskies took the field, but the Panthers dominated the game, making Harriso look feeble and breaking their winning streak at fourteen games. It was a sational victory and an upset that will be long remembered. At Greeley, we faced a team that outsized us, and again the Panthers fought hard, losing only one TD. Off to a good start, they crushed Pelham 15-50. Against Harrison they suffered a close defeat. In the third meet the Panthers fried Rye, 20-41. The Green team shut out Eastchester, allowing only one Eagle among the top twelve. In the final meet against Sleepy Hollow, the Panthers ran their best race, but still lost. It didn't win every meet but the 1966 Cross Country team was a team of which to be proud. Phil Bolduc set a new school record of 11:14 for the 2.2. mile course. Later in the sectional championships, Pete Freyberg ran well enough to be chosen as a state alternate. At the same meet, Tom Moroney placed third in the J.V. out of all of Westchester. Bringing more honor to PHS, Phil Bolduc was chosen to be on the six-man All-SWIAC team. The Cross Country deserves mention for having Meri Henken as manager. Meri is the first girl to manage a boys' sport at PHS. The team was well coached by Mr. Sabella and Mr. Wittern. Second year Panther stalwarts were Easy,, Ed Quincy, playmaker Jim Sabella, rebounder Allen Rapp, and sharpshooters Riefe Tietjen and Bob Crozier. From the initial tapoff to the sound of the final buzzer, the Big Green was in there contesting fiercely. While only emerging with four season victories, the desire to win for Pleasant- ville High School was overwhelming. The highlight of this year's court action was the victory over Rye, defending SWIAC champs. Other conquests included Valhalla and Harrison. Representing the Panthers this year at the East West SWIAC bout this year were Jim Sabella, Riefe Tietjen, and Ed Quincy, all of whose performances were characteristic of Pleasantville superiority.
