M r. George Nazaruk We, the Class of 1962, in leaving Pleasantville High School, take with us many cherished memories of the past four years. They represent a period of giving and of receiving: of giving our time and our minds to the task at hand and of receiving in return the basis of an education to which each of us will add those experiences that shape an individual's and a natifin's destiny. Pleasantville is and always will be our school. Because we have gained so much here, we urge future leaders of this school to preserve its quality and uphold its prestige. Its continuing excellence depends upon the active dedication of those who teach and those who learn. In these times when peace is the collective hope, and strength and courage the collective needs, we know that in education is our strength suppliedg and in the eternal heart of man are found the hope and courage that man will prevail. The Editors Page 4 ,. wggylw wt 1 If. r This is a man who supports his belief that the function of a teacher is to guide and prepare the individual so that he may achieve the ultimate of his capability. He willingly gives of his time to numerous school organizationsg he is quick to assist those in difficultyg he adheres to his principles in the face of opposition. We gratefully acknowledge these contributions to the school and especially to our class. It is with sincere admiration that we dedicate this yearbook to our class advisor. Page 5 GEORGE E. ANTI-1oNY SABELLA Administrative Assistant Members of the Class of '62: Greetings and Congratulations! A newspaper columnist recently deprecated the tendency of a national figure to speak and work according to a Grand Design. The expression intrigued me and set me to thinking about grand designs and their effect on mankind. Pursuing these thoughts inevitably leads one to authors of Grand Designs. Our heritage is replete with manifestations of grand designs - the great globe itself , the uni- verse, and the uncharted space beyond must be regarded as the grandest of all designs. So also do we regard its Author, our Creator. For countless years men have studied portions of this the Grandest Design to ascertain the laws which govern it and have thereupon promulgat- ed principles of mathematics, music, astronomy, and even certain verities concerning man's asso- ciation with his fellow men. Moses set down Ten Commandments for his people: jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount: believers in freedom created the Magna Charta and the Federal Con- stitution of the United States of America. They have been proved to be in harmony with God's 'Grand Design. Not one of those grand designs has failed to meet opposition among those whose aims were different from those of the designers. Evil men have made designs in great detail which violated the principles of those designs which are in har- mony with that of the Creator. Some such de- signs have already been shattered. The designs of Ghengis Khan, Mussolini, Hitler and others have cost humanity clearly, yet the Grand Design was not lost though it seemed to be for centuries during the Dark Ages. Presently great minds in western Europe are MR. RONALD C. MCCREARY Principal deliberating over a grand design in the form of a United States of Europe. Though this seems primarily economic in nature, behind it is a philosophy which, if it is successful, may bring more of mankind in closer harmony with G0d's Grand Design. It may well be a part of The Grand Design. VVhat has this to do with a high school and its graduates? Only this, to insure your well be- ing - indeed to justify your existence - you need to have a design which is in keeping with the Grand Design. High school, college, as well as your fellow men should help you to draw for yourself such a life plan. Contacts with teachers, professors, and other professionals whose concern is for the welfare of mankind, should possibly alter the original one in some respectsg disap- pointments, setbacks, poor health, even evil men will surely beset you and require further ad- justment in your life plan. It has been so in all history. Yet for the courageous, the able, the de- termined soul - these do not spell failureg con- trarily setbacks may lead to an even greater achi- evement than you had originally thought was possible . . . yet without the original plan meas- ured beside the Grand Design spelled out by our Creator, your lifetime may be meaningless and empty. Lincoln expressed this so well: I will study and prepare myself and someday my chance will come. In 1927 another newspaperman, David H. Burnham, wisely counseled thus: Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir men's blood. Make big plans - aim high in hope and work. So make no little plansf' Sincerely, Mr. M ac IN MEMORIAM LESLIE GARRISON December 12, l909 - June 3, 1961 Teacher of Instrumental Music I am not resigned to the shutting away of loving hearts in the hard ground. So it is, and so it will be, for so it has been, time out of mind: Into the darkness they go, the wise and the lovely. Crowned With lilies and with laurel they gog but I am not resigned. Lovers and thinkers, into the earth with you. Be one with the dull, the indiscriminate dust. A fragment of what you felt, of what you knew, A formula, a phrase remains,-but the best is lost. Down down, down into the darkness of the grave Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kindg Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave. I know. But I do not approve. And I am .lot resigned. Edna St. Vincent Millay Page 8 in W Ss? ST DE T GOVER ME T The Student Government is directly concerned with the welfare of the student body. Its duties are many and varied: approving new constitutions and acting as watchdog over existing ones, directing activities on Students' Day, sponsoring the Rye pep rally dance, running school elections in the spring, and en- forcing school regulations. The representatives had a busy year revising the qualifications for Monitors, approving 100 new badges for the PHP, selling tickets for BUS STOP, revising the list of school offenses, checking up on Student Court, the judicial branch of the Student Government. The absence of political parties failed to dampen the enthusiasm displayed by the representatives when expressing their opinions. XN'ith a healthy profit from 'ARye on the Rocks , Student Government set aside 35100 for the American Field Service Foreign exchange student to be sponsored by the school in the coming year. Another worthwhile investment was the loud-speaker trailer which made its debut during the football season. Charlie Cooper President Page 66 l L 4. The Big Bank Row 1. For 353.50 this ticket pro- vides free admission to all home football and basketball games, reduced prices to away games, and free editions of the Green Lantern. This year, with the increased crowds at football games, the G. O. met the surge with improved conces- sions facilities. To answer many requests, schedule cards for basketball and football games were printed and distributed free of charge to all ticket holders. The two school plays, The Glass llflenagerie and Blithe Spirit, were sponsored by the General Organization, and in March the G. O. held a semi-formal dance. The G. O. became the central banking system for school organizations using the school for money- making purposes. Consequently, the accounts of such groups as Student Government, Noon Hour Com- mission, and Athletic Council are under its supervision. Never once did the Panthers let up during the hot practice sessions of September or the cold ones of October. The coaches, Pete Kurachek and Charles Beattie, didn't have to tell the team to put more spirit and life into the gameg the team had the right spirit and attitude to play and play well, and both coaches had said this was going to be Pleasantville's best football team ever. The season started with a victory for the Panthers against the Horsemen. This was an exciting game with the only touchdown coming at the end when Bobby Ryan threw Dan Gatti the touchdown pass that won the game for us. The next game against Eastchester was a second Panther victory. Hastings could not stop Don Berger's scoring and the Panthers tallied a third win. Then came one of our biggest games with our formidable rival, Rye. It was on a rainy Saturday afternoon that the Panther team Fried Rye at the ex- pense of a few of Billy Bracciodieta's teeth. The Pelicans couldn't stop us, and the Panthers led the league 5'0. The time was then ripe for the final SWIAC game against last year's champs, the Harrison Huskies. They were hit by a stone wall led by defensive linebacker Glenn Gornnert, and were unable to score. The Panthers who were fighting with everything they had, won the game and the SWIAC championship for the first time since 1949. The final game, with Horace' Greeley, ended the season with our only defeat. We, as a team, can be proud of the season we have had this yearg the memories we take with us will be filled with the glory as well as the grind of the 1961 football season. They grew into a team in one short season aided by their fine coach, Jim McLoughlin, and by the best school spirit Pleasantville has ever seen. The Panthers started slowly, losing four of their first six games. At that time they were fighting more against injury and illness than against rival teams. When the team was at full strength it began to move. The Panthers won ten of their last twelve games. Vic- tories over Rye, Fastchester. Pelham, and Harrison, and two losses to Sleepy Hollow resulted in their sec- ond place standing in SWIAC. Against Pelham our school's all-time scoring record was tied with eighty- four points. As SWIAC runner-up the Panther team was in- vited to compete in the Section One Tournament. They defeated Peekskill 56-50 in an overtime thriller. Against Ossining the Panthers played their last game. lt was an unfortunate defeat, but at the hands of a good team. The Panthers were proud of their twelve victories, but they were even prouder of their many loyal fans. The Seniors on the team wish luck and success to next year's team. If basketball games are won on ability, they will surely succeed. Roger Buckhout and Dan Gatti Co-Captains , E51 A 4 Liifgg .. . CAMILLI 8m SONS INCORPORATED 75 COOLEY STREET PLEASANTVILLE NEW YORK V , r Talk happiness. The world is sad enough Without your woes. No path is wholly roughg Look for the places that are smooth and clear, And speak of those, to rest the weary ear Of Earth, so hurt by one continuous strain Of human discontent and grief and pain. Talk faith. The world is better off without Your uttered ignorance and morbid doubt. If you have faith in God, or man, or self. Say so. If not, push back upon the shelf Of silence all your thoughts, till faith shall comeg No one will grieve because your lips are dumb.
