R 5 FACULTY 'M a hu 1 1954 1-4 A ' I MY DEAR YOUNG PEOPLE . . . Congratulations upon your graduation from high school! In these days when the forces of Communism and totalitarian ideologies would seek our destruction, and men in high places would sell our birth rights for a mess of pottage, I feel compelled to speak plainly of your great responsibilities. In you and in the many thousands of young people graduating from our high schools and colleges lie the hope and future of our great nation. Yours is the challenge to pre- serve its greatness, its principles of freedom wherein lie the preservation of human dig- nity, its faith in God which long has been its greatest bulwark. These are the principles for which men have been willing to die-at Valley Forge and Gettysburg, in the Ar- gonne and the Black Forest, at Dunkirk and the Battle of the Bulge, in the South Pacific and in Korea. These were the men who died to keep America free. Yours is the challenge that they shall not have died in vain! Yours is the responsi- bility to accept this great challenge. If young people everywhere will decide never to exchange our great heritage for money or power, if you will discharge your civic duties with a sense of seriousness and responsibility, if you will rear your families in the solid faith of our fathers which has been our nation's source of greatness and power. if you will stop to count your privileges under the democratic way of life and be de- termined to preserve them, then no force from without and no threat from within will be strong enough to destoy this nation and its principles of freedom which are so dear to the hearts of all good thinking Americans. This is your challenge, and the challenge to all young people graduating in the class of 1954. Sincerely, Superiuleuderll TO THE CLASS OF inner . . . The achievements of your class have added a little more lustre to the history of Pleasantville High School, and in turn, PHS has given you a start in this wonderfully challenging business of living. There are many joys in store for you, but none that will eclipse the experiences of high school. Mine has been the privilege of sharing with you your hcartaches and your satisfac- tions and of growing with you in knowledge, in character and in friendships. This book will be more to me than a record of your classy it will represent your personality as a group and as individualsg it will remind me of the place you have won in my heart. Do not listen to the prophets of doom. Take counsel with your inner self-with the voice of the natural optimism of youth. Faith and courage overcome all things. Youth has served its mission in every generation. These words were written long ago for those who would make every day count in the art of living: Look fo fbi: day, for it is life. In il.r brief course lie all lhe rerilier of your exirlenreg lhe blirr of growlh, lhe glory of action, the Jplendor of beauty. For yerlerday if but a dream, and lomorrow if only a virionp bill Ioday, well lived, maker every yerlerday a dream of happinen and every tomorrow a virion of hope. Our second dance, Football Finale, followed the Thanksgiving Day game. Members of the football team, the coaches, and members of the opposing football teams, were the honored guests of this affair. Moonlight Fiesta, our final dance for our sophomore year, was held in April. Under the supervision of our new coach, Mr. Henry Boney, the PHS basketball team won the Press-Union Basketball Trophy. The baseball team, coached by Ty Helfrich, secured permanently the second and last Press-Union Baseball Trophy. This was the 18th time in the past 20 years Pleasantville High School had won the baseball championship. As juniors, we were officially upperclassmen. This, too, was to be a busy year for the class of 54. Upon returning, we found that there was a change in administration. Mr. Slaybaugh, who had been our principal for two years, was transferred to Mays Landing district as Superintendent. Mr. justin Hess, who taught many years in ACHS, became our new principal. Our very capable officers this year were: President, Ken Adamsg Vice President, George Garrickg Secretary, Mary Ann Reilly, and Treasurer, jean Dixon. One of our responsibilities this year was assisting in the cafeteria. Touchdown Time, a Thanksgiving dance honoring the football team, was our first dance of the season. Our big night, however, was May 22, the night of the junior- Senior Prom. Decorated with a Mexican theme, the gym was beyond recognition. The highlight of the evening came when Dot Clement and Don Clark, seniors, were crowned Queen and King of the Prom. The attendants chosen were Pat Parsells and Marilyn Moore and Bob Pollard and Charles McGinity. After three wonderful and seemingly short years, we were now the Almighty Seniors. 1 MR. At this time, the authoritative posi- tions of PHS are occupied by the students. The principal and the deans for the day are elected bv the popular vote of the student body. Last year it was our privilege. as -luniors. to have the deans chosen from our class. Mary Ann Mobus was selected to take Mrs. Hills place as Dean of Girls and Larry XY'ilson was chosen Dean of Boys. replacing Mr. Scholl. Ifach teacher selected student teachers from his own classes or from the junior or senior classes to follow his sthedule for the day. The teachers. in turn. were sched- uled to observe classes. Representatives from neighboring high schools visited PHS to see how we conduct Students' Day. A luncheon was served in the cafeteria for student teachers and guests. 4' A Dean of Boys Janitors for the Day PROM OF T53 The loxelgest exent of late spring was the 'Iunior Prom. The team wound up the season with two wins, two defeats, and one tie. Gaining vic- tories twice over Ocean City 6 to O and 13 to O and ty- ing a powerful Millville team 6-6, while bowing only to Atlantic City 55 to 6 and to Bridgeton 20-13. Many of the junior Varsity men saw action on the Varsity squad during the latter part of the season and had experience scrimmaging with Varsity Squad. The I. V. squad was checked carefully by head Varsity Coach Hen Boney. for replacements on the line, and in the backfield, to replace this year's thirteen gradu, ating seniors, I-Ie was well pleased with experience gained by the junior Varsity men, which will help mold them into future Varsity men. ' 18 Y, X25- FRESHMAN Time and again it has been proven that experience is the best teacher. For the second time in the history of Pleasantville High School a freshman football squad has been working out on the field. These eager freshman boys worked as the V. men did. learning the funda- mental necessities of football. The team got experience by occasionally scrimmaging the V. squad and by playing different schools. Since some of these schools had no freshman teams the squad was forced to play against Junior Varsity teams. Losing all of its games but one, the season ended with a 13,7 victory over the mighty Bridgeton eleven at Ansley Park. The squad was coached by Mr. Fred Zubrack. Mr. Boney checked this group of scrappy freshmen and felt confident in the future of Pleasantville High School football. ti J? 7 CHICK APPLEGET JOE DKQIACOMOA C.1j1l.im PAL1 QLENN Right Guard Right Forward 1,4-ft Guard ED CURRY Left Forward X-Y 3 M15-I -1 I! With the guidance of their advisors Miss jane Riehm and Mr. Paul Williams and their officers Phil Tripician, presidentg Sue Lloyd, secretaryg Bob Thompkins, vice presidentg Janet Crawford, treasurer, they began their program by assisting in operating the cafeteria. In November, a comedy I'm a Family Crisis was successfully presented. This production proved their ability to excel in dramatics. Three members of the class Dejah Steir, Ulf Ernst and jay Pierpont were selected as part of the Christmas play cast, The play entitled The Town That Couldn't Have Christmas was produced not only as part of the annual Christmas Festival but was presented to several church audiences and to our own assembly. i The first dance of the year sponsored by the juniors was a record dance given in October. The next dance Sleigh Ride with decorations carrying out the theme was one of the memorable affairs of the season. The junior-Senior Prom will climax the social program for the juniors and according to plans this affair promises to surpass any other prom. They began the year's activities in October by presenting the record dance, Harvest Hop Dance. In November they honored the football team with the annual Thanks- giving dance, 50 Yard Swing, with Bob Chester's orchestra playing. The climax of the dance was the crowning of a football king and queen. King was Ken Adams and Queen, Eileen Hackett. The unique dance given at Easter was also a credit to the Class of '56. The sophomores organized an advisory council. It consists of representatives from each sophomore homeroom, the class officers, and advisors. E STUDENT 2 Yak, Student Council Officers and Advisors COUNCIL One of the most efficient organizations in school is our Student Council, with Ken Adams, Presidentg jay Pierpont. Vice Presidentg Kathy Headley and Joan Pacula. Secretaries. Faculty Advisors are, Miss Mary Spinelli. Mr. Samuel Scholl. and Mr, Donald XVein- ing. During the year, representatives from the council attended conferences at Rutgers University and Wfoodrow Vifilson High School. These conferences are held yearly for the purpose of comparing school activities. Pleasantville High School is unique in being one of the first schools in South jersey to organize a student court, consisting of seven judges and a pros- ecuting attorney. For each session a new judicial Court is chosen. TATTLER This year marked the twenty-fifth anniversary for the Tattler. Since 1928, this popular school news- paper has helped parents, students and the faculty to be well-informed about happenings in and around our school. The Tattler was available to students every month. It stretched into the classrooms, to the sports, and after-school activities. Articles kept us informed on the faculty as did the gossip columns on students. Advisors, Miss Gertrude Guion and Mrs. Barbara johnson, were fortunate in having Geraldine Bright- on, editor fSeniorj and Margaret MacI.aughlan, as- sistant editor Uuniory as the heads of the paper. Their fine ability proved an essential asset to the Tattlers success. Tattler Editors and Advisors NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY I NHS Officers and Advisor The students in this outstanding organization are chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, char- acter. and service. Under the guidance of Mrs. Lois Seeley, they sponsored the first dance of the school year, The NHS Fall Frolicf' The group also gave the annual tea for the members of the faculty, this year before'Thanksgiving vacation. The impressive candlelight induction ceremony is held in March and is the last major project of eatn year. At this cere- mony, juniors and seniors who have acquired a scholastic average of 85 or above and maintained the standards of an honor student are made members of this society. This organization honors a worthy student at com- mencement by presenting him vvith a S100 award to aid him in furthering his education. The officers are Bettyanne Breckenridge, presidentg Nancy Hep- ler, vice presidentg Clare Reed, secretary, Larry Wil- son, treasurer. ,L ' ' A lg , 2 , . The choir performs at num- erous churches and social functions in and around the community. Probably the greatest of all the choir's activities during the year is the annual Christ- mas Festivalf' This performance is enjoyed by all who attend. Another outstanding program was the Sunrise Service at the Driveeln on Easter Sunday. The extra activities for the choir members always prove to be enjoyed by all the members who attend. These extra things include: the choir party in the fall. caroling at Christmas time, and the choir trip in the Spring. Under the capable leadership of Mr. Censullo, the choir is certainly to be remembered for their fine work. The officers for this year vvere: President.
