If GOOD FRIENDS To Miss MacDonald, our practical-minded ad- viser, goes the sincere gratitude and admiration of the class of '42 for her unfailing success in over- coming the many obstacles that arose. She has shown us that a keen sense of fun, a strict attention to detail, and a will to do well whatever is begun, can make an integrated personality, worthy of respect and emulation. To Mr. Huemer, our scholarly adviser, the class of '42 expresses its thanks and appreciation for his sincere efforts in guiding us through our troubles. He has taught us by personal example, the values of patience, diligence, and idealism. We shall re- member him as a kind friend, a real gentleman, and one with a true consideration for others. Together they constitute a splendid combination which has worked for the welfare, benefit, and happiness of both the individual seniors and the class itself. We are truly appreciative of the untiring and unselfish efforts they have put forth in our behalf. They hold an honored place at the top of the ladder-these seniors of next year. Before, they were just another group of underclassmen. They took the back seat while upperclassmen took all the glory for something they helped to achieve. This year they have demanded attention. They had good reason for doing so. Among their ranks, many have sparkled and out- shown others in any class. They have made a great contribution to this school, one we shall never forget. The good fellowship and cooperation of this class has given the lun- iors an honored place in our high esteem. September, l94l-the start of the football season, the juniors were well represented on the gridiron. There were Bob Hitchens, Robert Kepley, Ed Gorman, joe Flynn, Iohn Corson and Ioel Ortendahl. The vivacious cheer- leaders who supported their classmates were Marion Kline, Dorothy Downs, Betty lane Perry, june Spalding, and Nat Hallam. Iackie Simpson, dashing drum major, struck up the band in fine style. Earl Applegate, Dick Hoffman, Dot Neal, Eileen Hand, Dottie Harn- ilton, and Dick Grieshaber all did their share as juniors, to make the band a success. Then Christmas approached, and Betty jones, Gail Vetter, and Tony Bocelle stole the show from the rest of the classes by being the three juniors out of a cast of four. Back to school after the holidays! The bas- ketball season well underway showed Dan Chew, Duke McGrath, and Harris Sapp doing their share for the fame of the junior class. Winter soon disappeared and spring took its place. Dick Hildebrand, johnny Corson, George Carmen, Bobby Miller, Harris Sapp, and lfiike Mastro have been giving sparkling performances on the diamond all season. There are other outstanding notables of this fine group who did not participate in these lines of endeavor, but, nevertheless, 6' O 5 r , 3 2151, L. J .., 1 '. 1 1 fi f 5 VA .- P ' 1' , . 5 . J . Weve watched them grow for two years and they have definite promise of being one of the best classes to come up from the ranks in the history of our school, Already some of them are well known to all of us. We ve seen our young drum major Elaine Derricctt strut in perfect rhythm down the field for the honor and glory of P. H. S. To continue with the athletic prowess there are the popular, young football 'players of last season, Tony DeSimone, brother of our lohn, Louis Cavileer, Tom English, and lack Massey, who bid fair to make names for themselves on the gridiron of future Maroon and White teams while handsome Ed Guerro holds the coveted position of pitcher on the baseball team. We must not overlook the important part the girls play in helping the teams on to smashing victories. Next years heroes will THE SOPHOMORE CLASS be urged on by the now jun1or-vdrsity cheerf leaders, popular pretty girls every one of them, Dot Thompson, Eleanor Wallace, Dor- othy Wright, Barbara Cornett, Marion Antes, Dons Ballestrieri, and llcrrna Nugent. As products of their own athletic effort, it is nice to report that Alma lsluclcei and Evelyn Tilton have won distinction as capable bowlers on the newly-inaugurated bowling team. Are these the only sides to the present sophomores? Certainly hot, we have gust be- gun. A student poll reveals that the prettiest girls are Bertha Akeret and Gloria Sheetz and the most glamorous, Miriam Glanding. The handsomest fellow is Bob Sendler with his sparkling smile but he had lots of stern competition, The most popular girls and boys are Rita Smith, Lillian l-land, Tony DeSimone, and Lewis Cavileer, while Irene Craig and Duane Lee have the nicest personalities. Starrett Hill and Iosie Sacca are the best dressers. ff N :flaw aQA ?3f932fs,5 . A Q I - g 'J 'if 'x-it? v M JH-xr - K! Combining hard, clean football with unified teamwork, our boys came through with eight consecutive vic- tories. An experienced, wellscoached squad plus able replacements made this brilliant season possible. No small part in tnese victories, however, should go to a large, supporting student body. On hand at each game, to stimulate our boys to even greater deeds, were our three peppy majorettes, a snappy group ol cheerlead- ers, and the ever present band. Several of the games were exciting and closely matched but the Millville encounter was tops. Trail- ing tor almost the entire game, the Maroon and White gridders finally came to liie. Iohn Corson smashed through for the tying touchdown and lim Marshalls talented toe kicked the vital extra point. This leat won the game with just minutes to play. Other victims of our precision-lgke gridiron warriors included: Cape May, Boys Trade School, l-lammonton, Holy Spirit, Camden County Regional, Glassboro and our ancient rivals Ocean City. ln recognition ot their splendid work, the members ot the '.'QIfSif':' squad were presented with gold tootballs, zzgagor ceri.t1cates and letters. ln addztion, each senior if' also received a 'xslzite sweater The senior members are: Cantaxi Robert fkle john DeS1:11one, Douglas Cavi- leer, lazges Wray' Ciaries Spence lanzes Marshall, :1f..r'.' :gn l.15:.'::a Garrett l?a','::1ona liess, and W ' n s f gf 'Jeted Ocean City cf: if f f- 131, :terrier and .5 iii c':1'f.i'.te-di: 11.9 -- .54-.53 1ftE.isi:.e I - . . . . - V . , ,Of ne reryezgnerea nu' naveri fans ana , o 4' N ' , , ' A ' . , wi ge 'T 51.526- .ft1g. 3-aszn on g. znstorg' 'f,.-:T ' l.a .3 pu- After a number of disappointing years, basketball staged a brilliant comeback in Pleasantville these last two seasons. This year our record included double vic- tories over Hamrnonton, Egg Harbor, Woodbine, and Glassboro and single victories over Holy Spirit, Cape lffay, Tuckerton, and the alumni. We lost two games to both Ocean City and Atlantic City and were defeated in single games by Holy Spirit and Wildwood. This squad was ably supported by a fine group of reserves and lightweights. Much of the credit of our success should go to our coaches, Mr. Althouse and Mr. Moffitt. For the first time in a decade the preliminary games of the New Iersey lnterscholastic Athletic Association were held in the Pleasantville High School gym, Wild- wood defeated Egg Harbor and Ocean City defeated Swedesboro in these elimination games. The tourna- ment games have not only given our players addi- tional playing experience but have given impetus to the increased interest in basketball in Pleasantville. lt is hoped that this renewed interest may help place Pleasantville once more in the front ranks, a position it held for many years 'JS-' a-ni'- IN f N BASKETBALL 23 o J 9 ye I 3-ao' 1 0.111 BASEBALL ln l94l Pleasantville High School tied Merciiantville High School for the Class lll baseball championship cl Southern lersey, lf the opening games cl the l942 season are any measure of the teams linal success, this year s-squad promises to carry on the good record.
