HISTORY OF PLEASANTVILLE SCHOOL The first graded school building in Pleasantyille, a brick structure, Qpage 63 was built when Matt Douthitt was trustee, about 1870. This building' had two rooms. the lower one being used by the township. Mrs. Paxton agreed to furnish the upper room. furnish it, and lease the room. for a certain suin of money. on condition that she be allowed to hold a sub- scription school. a seminary in which the pupils paid tuition. She taught for six or seven years. A few of those who attended this seminary were Mrs. Henry Clark, Mrs. Susan Hale, Ben Lucas and Clark Howard. Ben Lucas walked to school each day from his home six miles south of Pleasant- ville. VV. XV. Howard and Newt McCammon were the next trustees. Mr. Columbus Bough. who has had a hardware store in Pleasantville for more than forty years. held office for two terms. The brick building burned while he was trustee. lt was replaced with a frame structure of three rooms. tpage 59 This building was used as it was first built, during the several years that Dan Sisson.
