Stanbnough, Penny Black. Dear Friends, In the past year, it has been my privilege and pleasure to serve as editor of the 1970 Blu-Jay. The staff and I have strived to capture the essence and spirit of the Pleasanton Schools which make the educational process unique. We present this annual hoping it will reflect the years of grade school and high school. I humbly thank my assistant, secretary, photographer, business man- ager, their assistants, and Mr. Johnson, our advisor, for their help in editing this yearbook. The question often arises concerning the purpose of a yearbook. The yearbook staff and I believe that a yearbook should fulfill certain qualifications. First of all it should provide educational opportuni- ties for the students on its staff. Second it is a pictorial record of school life and the students' accomplishments during the school year. Of most importance, however, the yearbook serves as a memory book and should always be evaluated on the basis of how it will impress the reader five, ten, or even twenty years from now. You, the Class of 1970, will have a special place in my memories. This yearbook record of a memorable year will serve to stimulate our mutual recollections in the years to come. Through the election of the pres- ident and their interest in the workings of the Council, the students become more fully aware of their responsibilities as citizens of a democracy. The Student Council acts to bridge the gap between the students and the faculty so both can meet the end of education which is the full development of the student into a more useful citizen. This year the Student Council has up-dated the constitution in order to serve better the students' needs. By procuring activities requested by stu- dents and fulfilling the needs of the students, the Council has demonstrated the values of democracy and has caused the students to be more willing to accept the duties that accompany the privileges of a democracy. Sincerely yours, 81.7.0-J Stephen Johnson Student Council President The 27 members of the Pleasanton High School speech and dramatics department experienced sev- eral different aspects of the oral language arts. Under the very capable direction of the department head, Mrs. Crawford, the students underwent a thorough study of the many diverse speaking sit- uations. Part of the year's study consisted of oral reports, panel discussions, debates and eu- 1 ogies ' Opportunit The special project of the speech department is the presentation of the Junior and Senior plays. In the fall the Junior play Good Morning Miss Dove was presented. The play dealt with the triumphs and difficulties of a strict disciplinarian teach- er. The actors were well rewarded for their ef- forts with a completely filled house. For the Senior play in the spring the play Bachelor Fa- ther was selected. The comedy was an adaptation of the television series of the same name. In the play the bachelor father encounters problems with his friends and niece. Again on the night of performance the actors were well received. In the year of speech work the highlight is the district speech festival. Preparing for the festival, the speech members attended the tournament at Pitts- burg and at Fort Scott. At Pittsburg Brenda Pack placed fifth in prose inter- pretation, and at Fort Scott Frances Butler placed third in dramatic interpreta- tion. The district speech festival was held at Kansas State College of Pitts- burg on March 21. Those receiving I's at the district were eligible to compete at the state speech festival. Those who competed at the state festival and re- ceived ratings of II were Brenda Pack with an informative speech, HSis Boom Bahn, Joyce Wheelock's poetry interpretation on homes, Karen McNabb's prose interpretation Gone with the Wind, and Frances Butler with the dramatic inter- pretation from Our Town. Those receiving ratings of I at the state festival were Dan Smith with an extemporaneous speech and Frances Butler and Stephen Johnson's duet act from Life with Father. We are very proud of the fine accomplishments of this year's speech depart- ment . ,W ' Q HQ Q 2 1' 9 Q 7- 961 if 2 Q ann -O Xl -s Lg. s 1 1 ueen Q Km Blu- .lay Royal Court Robert Hedrick 8 Joyce Wheelock KING 8 QUEEN Marvin Leisure 8 Dianna Cook Jeff Staton 8 Susan Flessner James Dunn 8 Phyllis Fletcher ATTENDANTS Troy Smith Kammy Krull CRQWNBEARERS REN-NETI' STUDIO WILBUR BARNETT, PHOTOGRAPHER 11 East Wall FORT SCOTT, KANSAS 66701 K M K K KN K X ,.
