Oct He- ,VW ,Q Ffh Pleasanton High School this year as ln past years has had a very successful basketball season To coin a phrase Coach Stegge s men were really on the ball Several new face- were seen on the starting llne-up this year Bparkplugs for the season were several new men Rayford Blevins Jimmy Cupples Delbert Mltchell and Jon Henderson The efforts of the preceding list of men were not completely unobserved last year since most of them were stars on the B ' squad. Of course a few Speedballs were left from last years cage quintet namely Harold Parker and Dee Bradley The last two men displayed the same smooth brand of ball that has been a characteristic of thelrs during past seasons Mound Clty our chief rival was the first vlctlm at the hands of the frightful five from P H 8 The Blu Jays trxmmed the Mound City Eagles feathers a blt short in the opening game of the season by a score of 42 to 07 Our next two games however were a little short of good basketball with two consecutive losses one to Parker 27 to 35 and the other to Arcadia 47 to 64 The Arcadia game was a non league One of the strorgest teams in the entire league was Prescott but they too proved a little weaker against the keen court action of the Blu Jays More valuable experlellce WHS gained when We met the Fort Scott B squad Although Fort Scott won by 9, very narrow margin 0118 of the D681 8811195 of the 8688011 W9-8 PllY0d DY the locals La Cygne was our next oppgnent and 3, hard fought victory was won by Pleasanton when the game ended with a score of 33 to 26 All the games were close this vear and skill was a main factor in determlnlng the winner of any one of the games Another victory was won by Pleasanton at Blue Mound when we defeated them 40 to 35 on their own court. Mound City proved a stumbling block for us when they defeated us on their court by the narrow margin of 40 to 46 Our second game with Parker played on our own court proved the better of the two teams when we won by an overwhelming score of 54 to 43 Agaln the Blu Jays played a close game with Prescott on their court and ln the last seconds of play defeated them by a frightening score of 36 to 38 The next game we were hosts to Blue Mound and again we were winners wlth a score of 43 to 39 During the last of the season after most of the league games had been played we seemed to lose much of our steam We lost to Bronson by a close score of 35 to 7 to La Cygne 37 to 54 to Kincaid 39 to 43 and to Loulsburg 35 to 48 When all the scores were tallied the Blu Jays won second place in the Linn County League After a short breather the team began play in the Linn County Tournament at La Cygne Since we automatically drew I bve we were slated to play the winner of the Parker and Mound City game The winner of that contest was Parker and on the second night of the tournarent we defeated them 52 to 84 La Cygne was the winner of their game the same night and we were rlvals with them for flrst place In the flnals we were edged out of flrst place and forced to place second when La Cygne defeated us by the close score of 26 to 80 For the District Tournament we went to Moran Our first game was played with Hound Clty and we defeat- ed them 48 to 82 Our second game was with the powerful Elsmore team and they were victorious over us with s score of 38 to 55 In the finals we played Moran in the consolation game Getting a second wind, we de- feated Moran 45 to 85 and brought home with us a third place trophy This ended our basketball season here at P H B and a thrilling season lt was Many of the games were as strenuous on the part of the rooters as they were on the part of the players I think wefll all admlt very few of us have experienced a more thrllllng season of basketball, than that was esperlenoed this year at P H 8 9 9 1 f , 44 u , .
