LUYBEN Sponsor As a sponsor she did so well, The seniors think she's mighty swell. sv We are now back from a very nice vacation and reunion of our Classmates of 56, in Key West, Florida. As we are sure that you will want to know what has happened to them in the past 10 years, here are the details. We were invited to have our reunion at the Hurricane Butch Restaurant, owned and operated by Robert Hirschy. We had just arrived and were talking to Robert when we heard a commotion out- side and looked up in time to see Don Melching jumping out of his Leppen Lena in which he is still chasing Decatur girls. A moment later we heard the breaks howling, and to our great surprise it was Marlene in her Silver Streak. While discussing good times we had experienced at Pleasant Mills the door opened and in came Larry Myers followed by the former Norma Jean Bailey. Larry is now a professor at Harvard University and Norma Jean and her husband are teaching near Toledo. We heard spurs jingling and much to our surprise we saw John Speakman and his wife walk in followed by Paul Butler loaded with fur coats for all the girls formerly in his class. Paul now owns, The Butler Fur Company and John owns, The B-Bar-B Ranch in Texas. We had just put our order in for lunch when the door opened and ln walked Gene Williamson, who is now a star basketball player for the Minneapolis Lakers, and Darvon Light who to our amazement is an Admiral in the U.S. Navy. We thought we heard a kitten purr and looked out to see John Wolfe and Carl Sipe get out of a Cadillac. Carl explained that John was now the President of General Motors and that he was editor of the New York Times. MESHBURGER'S STONE CORPORATION General Office Linn Grove, Indiana Just as we finished eating, the new owner of the Ideal Dairy Bar, Ada Foor, came in, followed by Ellen who has now taken her mother-in-law's place driving the school bus for Pleasant Mills. While catching up on details at Pleasant Mills someone in a bright sport shirt came in. We recognized Lester Sheets. who now is the head delivery boy at the 'Do It Right Store in Hawaii. Lester was telling us about life in Hawaii when Larry Merriman and Dick Byer came in. Dick is now the head Complaint Manager at the Intemational Harvester, and Larry is the director of the Philharmonic Orchestra. We heard a helicopter land and saw Judy Brunstrup climb out. Iudy and her hus- band now own and operate the Stucky Furniture Company in Willshire, Ohio. A few hours later Charles Wolfe came dragging in. When asked what was the matter he explained that he was director of Athletics at a famous girls' school and had to stay late with a class. When asked what we did to occupy our time Elinor explained that she was running a reducing salon, the 'Waddle In and Duck Out right here in Key West, and that Sue was the head secretary at the First State Bank in Decatur and that Carolyn was secre- tary of the Wilson and Bomholt Store in Celina, Ohio. After spending the rest of the week at Marlene's Hotel fThe Knickerbockery we all returned to our occupations. FARMERS' GRAIN COMPANY Grain-Feed-Seed-Coal Phone 26 Willshire, Ohio WC?-fd-'57 In 1952, 33 freshmen started at Pleasant Mills High. During the year David Gehres moved away so it left only 32 of us. Although uniforms were not available and the school was unable to enter the Adams County Baseball League last fall, the boys showed plenty of enthus- iasm to encourage the school to enter league play next September. The land purchased by the township for the school is in the process of being changed into a baseball field and track, which will eliminate the drives to various nearby diamonds for practice sessions. The Homestead Diamond was used most of the time last year. The boys were well-coached by Mr. Oetting. We rode along, having a real good time, till we came to a sudden stop at Barberton, Ohio. Everyone asked why the sudden stop, when we found we had hit a car that had stalled on the tracks. Luck- ily, the occupants of the car had made it out safely. We stopped at Youngstown, Ohio, for our supper at the Wickwood Restaurant. We got on the train, and soon it was dark. Some tried to sleep, only to be awakened by those who couldn't sleep. Then we came to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, where the glow of the giant blast-furnaces against the backdrop of the dark sky made a beautiful sight. Eventually, we settled down some, and before long it was daylight and Monday morning came in foggy and rainy. We reached Washington around 7:00, at the Union Station. We walked through drizzle to our hotel, 'I'he Carlyle, only a few blocks away. There we were as- signed to our rooms, and after freshening up, we ate breakfast at the hotel. A Carrol coach came to pick us up and to take us on our first day of sightseeing. We got acquainted with our driver, Joe, and then left for a lecture tour of Washington, which included the Smithsonian Institute, Lincoln Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Trophy Room, and Amphitheatre, Embassy and Legation Sections of Federal Triangle, Pan American Union. Then we went to Alexandria for lunch at the Penn Daw restaurant. We also visited the Christ Church at Alexandria and the Masonic Memorial. Then we visited Mount Vernon. That evening we had free, which was alright with us, as most of us were dead-tired from lack of sleep and the busy day of sightseeing. Did we go to sleep, though: No. We sat and talked, and some of the more energetic ones went for walks. Finally, we went to sleep, think- ing of the things we did and saw that day. Tuesday morning our coach picked us up again for a tour of the Bureau of Printing and En- graving - all that money, and we didn't dare touch itl Then we saw the Washington Monument, The Treasury Department, and Archives Building. We stood in line in the rain fit rained all the time we were in Washingtonj to visit the White House. The rooms were beautiful and something we'll always remember. Our bus took us back to our hotel, but we went down to a diner near our hotel where we ate. Our bus picked us up again and took us to the Federal Triangle. From there we took a walking IOLH' and Saw the CapitolBuilding, Senate and House office building, where we sat in the gallery and watched the Senators in session. We saw the Supreme Court Building and Library of Congress. We rushed back to our hotel to get ready - we were going to a supper club. We didn't look the same after a couple hours of primplng. The boys were dressed in suits and ties, and the girls were decked out in their Sunday Best. A photographer took our pictures. We saw different acts, the highlight of which was Bill Haley and the Comets. They called attention to our group and turned a spotlight on us. Were we surprised! Some of us went to the show that night after the supper club. We came back to the hotel, and so to bed. TREASURY DEPARTMENT Wednesday morning we had free time. The girls went uptown shopping, but we all rushed back and ate dimer because that afternoon we were going to Annapolis to the Naval Academy. We saw many sights there, the most impressive of which was the Dress Parade. We will never forget the lines of Midshipmen, all in perfect marching step and perfect precision. We came back to our hotel about 4:00, where we finished packing. We ate supper, then checked out of our hotel and went to Union Station and put our luggage in lockers. We had the evening free until 11:30, so some of us just walked around or went to a show. At 11:30 we left Washington and rode tmtil about 6:30 A.M. Thursday morning, when we stopped for breaktast at Pittsburgh. We bought snacks on the train to keep from getting too hunk gry. We arrived home about 1:30 Thursday afternoon, tired, hungry, but happy. We will never forget the sights we saw -- the changing of the guards, the dress parades, the monuments, the govemment buildings, and the White House. We remember too, the crazy things we did and the good times we had together. We will never forget Washington --The home of the government of our great country. It made us realize how really fortunate we are to be living in this land of ours. Someday, we hope we can go back.
