It houses eight classrooms, cafeteria, dining room, dressing rooms, and a gymnasium - auditorium. Its trophy cases contain displays of athletic accomplishments. The stage in the auditorium has been the scene of many class.plays, musicals, etc. A movie projector, used in the assembly, has become a popular part of the school program. The spirit of the school was carried forth onto the basketball floor and softball diamond. Pleasant Mills is proud of the sportsmanship displayed by the athletes who carried her banner. Within her walls, we studied, laughed, played, and had general good times. Yes, and sometimes we wept. These memories are now priceless to us. The sound of the bell, the meetings in the gym, the friendly lunch hour in the cafeteria, intramural basketball games for girls as well as boys were a part of our lives, we shall miss them! 9 133 ANNA BELLE CASE Annie Basketball Z years Junior Play Senior Play A sweet disposition has this gal, To one and all she's a real pal. November 25, 1930 SENIOR CLASS HIST ORY In September, 1946, 30 Freshmen walked through those great swinging doors of the Pleasant Mills High School. I guess we were about the Greenest Freshmen ever to wander through the halls of the building of knowledge. The following officers were elected for that year: President ------------ Phyllis Heimann Vice-President ---------- Gene Suman Secretary-Treasurer ------- Alta .Tones Sponsor ------------ Mrs. Alma Owens We had two parties during the school year, both at the school- house. Everyone had a good time as only Freshmen can. Thirty students registered for the Sophomore Class of P. M. H. S. on September 3, 1947, intending to stick it out for the year. Two of our members fell by the wayside during the year. At an early meeting of the class the officers for the year were elected: President -------------- Alice Young Vice-President ----------- Arthur Funk Secretary-Treasurer ------ Beverly White Sponsor- 4 --------- Mr. Arnold Conrad Two parties were held during the year, both at the schoolhouse, since we had enjoyed ourselves there so much last year. The parties were both adjudged successes. The big event of the Sophomore year was receiving our class rings. We, the .Tolly Juniors, were ready to begin another year in search for knowledge within the walls of P. M. H. S. We came back in a body of twenty-one. Clara Belle Daniels was a new member in our class. The following officers were elected for the year: President ------------ Mildred DeRoo Vice-President ------------ Bob Wolfe Secretary -------------- Pat Gephart Treasurer ----------- Phyllis Heimann Sponsor - - ----- Mrs. Eloise Andrews The activity that caught the eye of everyone in our Junior year was the class play we produced, BUSY AS A BEAVER. This was given just before we left on our trip to New York City. I don't believe anyone will ever forget that trip. I know I won't. Our class party was held on October ll at the school gym. 15 H, 1 'Q qi. , u 'Q 4, 1 w. 11 f A 4 f X I 1 'Er Y lm.- ,fm m N ,r', . ,-4 A 1 Johnny on the Spot--that's us! They are as follows: President --------------- Bob Wolfe Vice-President --------- Mildred DeRoo Secretary -------- - -Anna Belle Case Treasurer ----------- Phyllis Heimann Sponsor ---- ----- M rs. Eloise Andrews Our class play, GONE WITH THE GIRLS, was given January 28, 1949. It was a great success. One party has been held during the year at the school grounds, with the Seniors entertaining the Freshmen. Ruth Ehrsam and Anna Belle Case were selected to make arrangements for the party. How quickly those years passed. It seemed no time at all until Ruth and I were busy preparing invitations. What: Class of 49 Reunion Where: Diamond Horseshoe When: May 8, 1959 Banquet for all 1949 Seniors of Pleasant Mills and their extensions. The Diamond Horseshoe Restaurant formerly Ed and Pat's, now owned by Anna Belle Case and husband. That lengthy invitation seemed to lure everyone back to the old stomping grounds. Reservations came in promptly from many of the grads. As hostess, I had been busy for a week but with the assistance of Ruth, everything was in order for our guests when they began arriving at six-thirty. Our first caller was Mildred DeRoo, her husband, and two lovely children. We were interested to learn that she had come all the way from California where she now owns a beauty shop which caters to the Hollywood stars. She lives next door to Elizabeth Taylor. Our next guests were Pat Gephart and her husband. They own the Pleasant Mills Enquirer, but are in the process of buying the Washington Times. If the deal is completed, they will live in Washington, D. C., where we have been invited to hold our reunion of 1969. We were chatting along when the maid announced Eleanor Chronister and her husband, owners of a large oil well in Arizona. They find both the time and money to do extensive traveling. .To Ellen and Tom, their two children, remained at home with a companion and tutor. A special delivery arrived from Lee Girod. He regretted deeply that he and his family would be unable to keep the appointment due to the fact that the three children were quarantined for the measles. He said that he owned the Ford Agency in Austin, Minnesota. They would make every effort to attend the reunion in 69. David Ripley came next and alone. When we inquired where his better half was, he hurriedly informed us that he was not fooling away all his time on one woman when he was the coach of the ten most beautiful redheads in the world. While Dave was relating the accomplishments of his basketball club, he was interrupted by the arrival of Phyllis Heimann and her husband. They are both teachers at Ball State College. Jo Ann Heimann and her financee were along. She is a well-known artist. 18 We were all happily surprised when Alta Jones came. She had married a New York designer of women's clothes. While modeling for him, the romance developed and now they have opened a swank Fifth Avenue shop. She promised us all a complete outfit at cost if we came to visit her. We heard a racket while she was talking and in bounced Glen and Gene with spurs a jingling. Owners of a Dude Ranch in Texas, the two are experts on horses and horsemanship. M, G. M. , if you are in need of a good horse for your coming shows, please see these fellows. El Paso, Texas, Four Sixes-666 Ranch. We were all pleased to have pictures made of the reunion group-- thanks to Josephine Sheets and her husband who own a large studio in Fort Wayne, formerly known to Pleasant Mills students as the Roberts Studio. Her camera caught a good picture of the next guests. A chauffeur helped Alice Young and her husband into the restaurant. Huge boxes bulged with gifts for the ladies. Imagine our delight when each was presented with a lovely make-up kit. Alice told us that she and her husband had bought Max Factor, Inc. with shops in Europe as well as America. Then came Bryce Miller who has long been known as a hardware expert. He still owns the original store in Wren, Ohio, but he has a chain of similar stores in southeastern Ohio. He declares that his success comes from letting women alone. Nona Reta Mauller came alone. Her husband, a partner of Arthur Murray, was involved in a big business deal and was unable to leave. Reta was most helpful in teaching us all the latest rhythms. We danced to the music of Sammy Kaye and his orchestra. While we waited for dinner to be served, we gathered close to the band stand to listen to his vocalist. Many were surprised. Some hadn't known that Beverly White had been featured with his band for some time. And best of all, she and Sammy are engaged! Sabina Taylor and her husband entertained us after dinner with moving pictures of their trip to Africa. Soon they will be leaving to do missionary work in New Zealand. We mustn't forget Bob Wolfe. He had come early as he lives close- by. We are all proud that he is the principal of Pleasant Mills School which boasts an enrollment of eight hundred. Joyce Musser told us that she had studied to be a masseur and had worked as a masseur in some of the larger hospitals of the country. Present plans include a trip to Paris in the summer. Long after the dinner was over, our last schoolmate arrived. lt was Ed McCullough. We all wanted to know why he was so late. He explained 19 that he owned a large furniture store in Chicago. He sat down to rest in one of his over-stuffed chairs after a busy day and fell asleep. When he awoke, he had missed his plane. He was fortunate to get a friend to bring him in his helicopter. Arrangements were made for all the guests to stay at Ruth Ehrsam's hotel, the Van Orman, formerly in Fort Wayne, now located on the suburbs of Pleasant Mills, Indiana. In the morning the old gang would be leaving not to meet again until 1969 when we promised we would get together for our second reunion, perhaps in Washington, D. C. We'1l be seeing you in 69f Z0 fT UNDERGRADS JUNIOR CLASS -'Y September 7, 1948, the Jolly Juniors started back to school at a well known site, good old P. M. H. S. The Junior Class acquired one new member, Vaughn Mattax, who recently went to Monroe High School. We lost five class members during the year: Vernon Kiser, Minnie Myers, Marjorie Merrits, Glen Strahm, and Alice Myers, four of them moving to other comnnunities. Our Class Officers are as follows: President - Donald Sipe Vice-President - Vaughn Mattax Secretary-Treasurer - John Johnson Class Sponsor - John M. Bauman The Junior Class held a class party September 30, 1948, at the CCC Camp at Bluffton. Although we couldn't find an empty shelter house, we had a good time at an open fireplace in the park with the aid of Tom Speakman's lights on his Jeep The class was well represented at the party. The only complaint, as far as we know, was that of being sleepy the next morning. The Junior Class is planning to have a play this year as it is customary for the Juniors. The money earned from this will help finance the trip we anticipate with the Senior Class. We 'chose our class officers as follows: President - Jim Price Vice-President - Dorothy Myers Secretary - Erma Fortney Treasurer - Ben Jones Sponsor - Mrs. Frey A class party was held at Hanna Nuttman Park near Decatur, Indiana, during the first semester. Everyone enjoyed refreshments and games. Four boys, Jim Frey, Marvin Watkins, Bill Workinger, and Jim Price are playing basketball on the first and second teams. Also two of our Sophomores, Annabelle Bebout and Marjory Miller, are serving us as cheer- leaders. A We hope the Seniors of 48-49 have a wonderful future awaiting them. GOOD LUCK SENIORSP' FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY We started our first year in high school with an enrollment of twenty- four pupils from five different schools. We were full of enthusiasm and interesting ideas about the years we would spend in Pleasant Mills High School. We promptly elected the following class officers: President - Bill Johnson Vice-President - Bob Bowen Secretary - Sally McCullough Treasurer - Richard Young Sponsor - Albert Coppess One of our greatest trials was Freshman initiation. Appearing in class with our clothes wrong side out, on backwards, and with hair done up in a strange fashion, we furnished much amusement for the upperclassmen. Two parties were held, one at the schoolhouse, as guests of the Seniors, and one at Sunset Park. Both were greatly appreciated. We are now looking forward to our second year in high school. The youthful comedy, which was well re- ceived by an appreciative audience, revealed the everyday happenings in the lives of Mrs. Alecia Capp, her four adolescent children, Grandpa Capp, the old rascal with a mind of his own, Ora, the maid, Lenny Fair, the nurse, and Binny Ware, the actress. Mother Capp announced her approaching marriage to Gregory Thatcher Van Stael, much to the disgust of the children and ended her matrimonial career by bringing home a policeman for a new father. In the midst of all this, the children managed to get themselves into one scrape after another. Those in the cast were Anna Belle Case, Sabina Taylor, Bob Wolfe, Nona Reta Mauller, Ruth Ehrsam, Patricia Gephart, David Ripley, Bryce Miller, Mildred DeRoo, Phyllis Heiman, and Ed McCullough. Other members of the class assisted as stage hands, costumers, prompters, and ushers. Mrs. Andrews directed the production. In their Junior year the class successfully produced the three act comedy, Busy As A Beaver, written by Russell Drake and under the direction of Albert Coppess. Those who participated in the play were: Gaylord Clayton -------- Donna Clayton ---- - - Judy Clayton ---- Prescott Clayton Tillie ------- - - Polly Clayton - - - - Agatha Cornwall- - - Phelps Webb ----- Bedelia Shannon ---- - Miriam Day ------ - Mrs. Josephine Ripley - Lynn Fuller ------ - Hebert Howson ---- - - - Bob Wolfe - - Pat Gephart - - Clarabelle Daniels - -Bryce Miller Anna Belle Case - -Ruth Ehrsam - - Alta Jones - - David Ripley - Beverly White - Mildred DeRoo - - Alice Young -Phyllis Heiman - -Robert Young NOMINEES FOR UREVUE QUEEN OF 1948 MUSICAL REVUE GROUP .L........s1f . . . ij 'F 31 MUSIC REVUE 32 MUSIC DEPARTMENT Slide-step-slide and a hop-hop-hop went the drill routine girls. Boom-boom-boom went the bass drum and tramp-tramp-tramp went the grade children in the flag drill. Aspiring soloists and trying trios plied their voice to the tunes of recent popular songs. The first six weeks of school were busy ones for about 110 pupils of the music department. It was the preparation for the Music Revue, A CAVALCADE OF HIT SONGS. Given the nights of October 19-Z0 and made up of popular songs from the past Z3 years, the Revue was a variety program in- corporating the talents of students from the third grade to the seniors. A band composed of Grace Baltzel-piano, Gloria Merriman-accordian, Robert Young-guitar and Alyce Musser-drums, furnished rhythmic accompaniment for the various groups. Scenery groups ranged from Mexican for ln A Little Spanish Town and Ti-pi-tin to Western for Throw Another Log On The Fire and Don't Fence Me ln. Perhaps the prettiest scene was the river scene with its lover-laden canoe for Down the River of Golden Dreams. Top soloist honors seemed to go to Kent VonGuten singing Mairzey and Ruth Johnson singing I Believe in Miracles. The Senior trio, Sue, Phyllis and Pat, capably portrayed their song, Honey. Much of the credit for the success of the Revue goes to the senior girls who were Nominees for Revue Queen of l948. All the senior girls who are members of the music department competed in the contest to see who could sell the most tickets and hereby get the most votes. Through the efforts of these girls, over 470 tickets were sold in advance. Mildred DeRoo was declared Revue Queen and received the Silver Loving Cup for selling 203 tickets. From the proceeds of the Revue, the music department purchased the drum outfit and a new record player with a few records as permanent additions to their investment in a good time for all the cast at a skating party. The Revue was well received by the patrons of the community and the cast feels that it is just a good beginning towards what can be done another year when they will be experienced artists in the work. The music department had scarely settled down from the excitement of the Musical Revue when they were asked to prepare something for the P. T. A. Festival. Some of the girls from the glee club worked up a Blackface Minstrel. The enthusiasm of the girls, the peppy negro songs and their colorful appearance in the crowd at the festival made the boys a little sorry they had not taken the chance when it was offered to them. After the festival came the Christmas season with its lovely songs. Again this year we presented a brief and simple, but representative program of Christmas music. Included in the program was Sue White 33 singing a solo, O Holy Night, and Mr. Dolby singing Schubert's Ave Maria. About twenty-five boys and girls with the music teacher went caroling on Monday night before Christmas. The Weatherman co-operated very well with us and gave us a little snow, fabout the only snow before Christmas, which added to the spirit of the group. Carols were sung for several aged and sick residents of the community, teachers, friends, and occupants of the county home, and hospital. We tried to carol for the occupants of the jail, but found it empty--so it was soon filled with twenty-five carolers. After being released from the jail we went to Josephine Sheets' grandmother's home for refreshments and relaxation before going home. A good time was had by all: The second semester has brough the music to be learned for the County Music Festival which will be held again at Geneva on April 1. The music is harder this year and will take considerable practice for mastery. Mr. Varner Chance from Fort Wayne will be the guest conductor for the combined groups again as he was last year. lndefinite plans are being considered for several projects for the musical department members this semester. A listening program is under way in all music classes using the new record player and there is some probability that the county may set up a county library of music records. 50me instrumental W0I'k is being introduced in the grade music classes. We feel that with the co-operation of all the students and faculty the music department can become very valuable in the production of well- rounded personalities in our school students. Through music we learn to follow the leader, work together, use own individual abilities, become accustomed to facing an audience with poise, confidence and pride, to entertain ourselves and others, and develop refinement of character and personality. 34 JUNIOR-SENIOR TRIP Destination: New York City On April ZZ, 1948, the Juniors and Seniors of Pleasant Mills High School left via the Erie Railroad for a trip to New York City under the supervision of Principal Hansel Foley and Mrs. Foley. After dinner and breakfast on the train and a day and a night's ride, we arrived at Jersey City, New Jersey at eight in the morning and boarded a motor coach, which took us under the Hudson River through the Holland Tlmnel to Manhattan and the Victoria Hotel on Times Square for registration. We had about two hours to ourselves after which we had lunch and then we were off to a sightseeing cruise which circurnnavigated Manhattan Island. We had dinner at a nearby restaurant after landing from our interesting four hour cruise. Radio City Music Hall Theater was scheduled for the evening but due to a misunderstanding in our reservation, the plans were called off. Most of us went to a movie instead. Friday morning after a hearty breakfast at the hotel we had an appointment to watch the broadcast of Fred Waring's wonderful program at N. B. C. Studio. Immediately following that we were conducted through Rockefeller Center some seventy stories high. We had lunch in a lovely restaurant in Rockefeller Center. In the afternoon we began a tour of lower Manhattan which in- cluded China Town and the Bowery. Then we ferried to Staten Island to see the Statue of Liberty. We walked to the very top of the statue from which we had an excellent view of the harbor. Friday evening was for our own sightseeing. Most of us saw a show or watched the interesting life on Broadway and Times Square. After breakfast on Saturday we started a tour of Uptown New York including Riverside Drive, Grant's Tomb, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Columbia University. We had the rest of the day for shopping. That evening we left on the Erie arriving in Decatur the next afternoon, tired but inspired from our wonderful experience. We are all anticipating the trip we hope to take this spring. 35 SUPER SALESMEN Early last fall Mr. Frank Hawker, representative of the Curtis Publishing Company, called at Pleasant Mills School to present his money-making scheme to the Juniors and Seniors. You guessed itf Magazines were to be sold. A contest was promptly arranged. lf both classes sold 5300.00 in subscriptions, the treat was on Mr. Hawker. For the boy or girl who collected the most subscriptions a table radio was the reward, and best of all, the classes were to share in the profit of the sales. For fourteen days the race was on. Sample copies of the Ladies Home Journal, Holiday, Field and Stream were much in evidence as the super salesmen Ysallied forth. A giant thermometer in the English Room gave silent proof of the sales ability of the Juniors. Additions were made daily to the thermometer as the Juniors soared to the grand total of 5843.05 in subscriptions. Champion salesman was Tom Noll with 5144.75 followed closely by Virginia Railing with S l37.50. Those presented with Certificate Awards for ten subscriptions or 530.00 were David Ripley, Tom Noll, Tom Speakman, Rose Raudenbush, Robert Young, Mary Ellen Beer, Virginia Railing, Don Sipe, Vaughn Mattax, Vernon Hirschy, Charles Ripley. In January the grand prize, a beautiful plaque, known as the Curtis Achievement Award, was presented to the school as a permanent possession for the trophy case. We are proud to announce that the com- bined sales of the Junior and Senior classes amounted to 51,169.50 placing us in a distinguished group of high school salesmen throughout the United States. We feel that the Junior and Senior classes deserve hearty congratulations. P. S. l: The treat was on Mr. Hawker. Ice cream bars were distributed to the successful classes. It is known that some individuals ate as many as five bars. P. S. Z: Virginia Railing for her outstanding record was awarded a prize of 55.00 by the members of the Junior Class. 36 A XT ATHLETICS BASKETBALL IN 1948-49 On November 1, 1948, Coach John M. Bauman made his first call for candidates for the 1948-49 basketball team. Much to his surprise he found forty-five green, but eager candidates that were willing to give their all for Pleasant Mills High School. After drilling and working with the men for three weeks the squad was reduced to twenty players and two student managers. On November 5, the Spartans opened the basketball season by winning the basketball game over a good team from Wren, Ohio. The Spartans continued to play good basketball and registered wins over Union, Ohio, and Jefferson while losing to Berne, Hartford, Monroe, and Decatur Commodores. On December 17 the Spartans started to hit a slump caused by the hip injury of their center, Ripley, and lost games to Monmouth, Kirkland, Monroe, Geneva, and the first game in the County Tourney to Hartford. The Spartans snapped out of their slump by winning a game from Bryant. They continued to show signs of improvements with new aggressiveness and good ball handling and should develop into a good ball club by sectional time. The schedule and scores of the games for the season follows: Pleasant Mills Wren ------------------ Pleasant Mills Berne ----------------- Pleasant Mills Hartford ------------ Pleasant Mills Monroe --------------- Pleasant Mills Union ----------------- Pleasant Mills Comrnodores ----------- Pleasant Mills Jefferson -------------- Pleasant Mills Monmouth ------------- Pleasant Mills Kirkland --------------- Pleasant Mills Monroe ---------------- Pleasant Mills Geneva ---------------- Pleasant Mills County Tourney Hartford Pleasant Mills Bryant ---------------- Pleasant Mills Hartford ---- SPARTANS 14' W 55N x. ff ,www-vqu-gnk .,,...1.....,.......z. .l....,.. 5 ..,...,..Tw...-......-.'k......--.A 39 THE FIRST EIGHT Bryce Miller, a five foot seven inch Senior guard, has played two years for the Pleasant Mills varsity basketball club. Bryce has been a dependable guard and safety man on the club this season. He looked especially good against Bryant playing a very good floor game besides getting eight points for the Spartans. Eugene Suman, a five foot eight inch Senior guard, has had two years of varsity competition. Gene was a fast and clever guard hard for his opponents to handle. Gene's speciality was a flying ballet shot which he executed with great accuracy. Gene was outstanding against the Monroe Bearkats when he drove for the basket, made a sudden stop, let the defense go by, and then laid up the ball for two points, Glen Geyer, another Senior who measures five feet eleven inches, was a reserve forward who had two years of varsity experience with the Spartans. Glen was a very good shot from out on the floor and proved of valuable assistance. David Ripley, a six foot Senior, served as center. He has had two years experience in varsity athletics. Dave was the big boy on our club and much depended on him. He had the misfortune of injuring his hip, a fact which handicapped him a great deal during midseason. Dave played his best game against the Bearkats from Monroe. We will remember Dave for his high arching shots from out on the floor either with one or two hands. Vernon Hirschy, a five foot eleven inch Junior forward, played his first year with the Spartans. Vernon has learned a lot during this season developing nicely in the rebound work as well as playing the pivot position. Vernon has played consistent ball and stood out perhaps most against the Warriors of Jefferson early in the season. Much is expected of Vernon in the next season. .Tim Price, a five foot six inch Sophomore guard, has played two years with the Spartan Club. Jim had a late start this season due to illness, but he has had a good year since his return. He was a clever ball handler and quite elusive on the floor. Jim's best game was against the Commodores at Decatur, His floor play was outstanding as well as his scoring which accounted for three goals and six foul shots for twelve points. 40 Bill Workinger, a five foot ten inch forward, had his first year of varsity experience. Bill is a good rebounder and a good ball handler but needs to hit the basket more consistently. Against Hartford, Bill looked his best doing a great job of rebounding besides getting three field goals and one foul shot for seven points. We will be watching Bill the next season. Marvin Watkins, a five foot seven inch Sophomore guard, is getting his first year of experience as a Spartan. Marvin has a lot of drive and has come up with some nice games this season. His outstanding performance perhaps was the game against the Commodores at Decatur on December 8. Much will be expected of Marvin the next two years. 41 . ,.i,. Mm...
