x x + x x x x x x x x 4 SPOTLIGHT 1 m x x x 1 1 4 1 + 4 4 EASKETBA LL 1940-41 Many candidates resorted for the opening practice to defend the County and Sectional crowns. The Freshmen were the only players without experience. The regular five again consisted of four Seniors and one Junior. These five started the season slow But soon settled and started to win. This team won 8 and lost 5 games in the first half of the season. The County Tournament brought bad luck to the Spart ans. In their opening game they successfully defended their title against the Monmouth Eagles, victors of the Spartans in an early season game. The score was very close until the third quarter when the Spartans started their drive to victory. lhe final score ended 35 to 24 with Monmouth trailing. The Kirkland Kangaroos, a strong contender for the title, were the semi-final foes. The score was very close until the last few minutes of the game. The Spartans ending the game with only three men and were defeated 29 to 24. They finished the regul r season with a fine record of 13 victories against 9 defeats and won second place in the County standings. Kirkland finished in first rl- ace with 15 victories and 6 losses. The regular season keing over Mr. Vizard and his boys set their eyes on the'Sectional Tournament. Going into the tournament as the defending Champions. 'll of the competing teams were out to defeat us. The Geneva Cardinals, one of the Spartans oldest rivals, gfve the Champions a reel battle. The score was very close with the Spartans coming from behind in the fourth quarter to win 37 to 32. In the semi-finals against the Kirkland Kangaroos, who were the victors three times in sefson play with usg the defeats in season play were avenged. The Spartans taking the lead well ahead 36 to 25. In the final game the Yellow J ckets, defeated us in a sea- son game, repeated this and deprived us of our crown.
