Due to the basketball schedule the play was not presented at the set time. Mr. Vizard and his wife took the play cast home after practice when the participants had no way of getting home. The boys and girls always liked the ride home better than the actual practice. Lancaster happened to have the same play for their Senior Class, so in preparation for the play, the cast took an evening off to attend it. When they returned from ,Lancaster, the cast stopped at Mr. Marsh's where the Juniors were having their class party. All the members of the play had a glorious time at the Junior's expense. During one practice, Mr. Vizard's wife, had pop corn for the actors, so they didn't get much work ac- complished, but enjoyed themselves immensely. On the evening of the play We had our first trou- ble when Dick Stinnett took sick with a cold, we kept him doctored up with Quinine and aspirin tablets so that we could finish the play, The life of the play nractice was Marian B,,ckhaus CPoppyJ, who led bonny Foor around by the ear. illliffklkllllkllllkiillkllllkilillllilllillllllllilillillkilllllklil up '3 . , , Y' ' J .qv ' V .gg '.: ' 1 Q 514511 .LDMAAL Ike? 4 ' ni ':..- . M. and everyone was rather quiet until we got to Merkel where the Seniors of Markel High School shared the car with us. A few of the girls started the ball rolling by go- ing up and sitting with two Merkel boys. he stopped at Huntington to get a teacher. While ,assing Rochester we was where Cole Brother's Circus had burned. Doc, Bob, Glen and Sonny got tired sitting still so they went to the smoking car to play cards. Some of the students wondered where they had gone so they started out to find them. They passed throught several Pullman cars before they found them. Everyone was getting rather tired and hungry by the time we pulled into Chicago which was about 8:30. The tuses were waiting to show us around Chicago. The first place we went was to the Swift Meat Packing Company. We saw how they killed sheey, cows, and other animals. It took us several hours to go through it. We then went to the Science Building where you were to push buttons turn cranks and watch what would hf oen. While we were in there some got a calling for talking and laughing too loudly. By the time we were through this building everyone was hungry. Our nest stop was at the Field Museum where we ate in the caferteria. he looked around for awhile, then went to the Aquarium which as very interesting. From here we went to the Zoo where we ggw the ani- mals and one very large ape. he didn't stay long here Lecause there wasn't much to be seen. We then went to Marshall Field Company. Here we found the escalator and everyone had been riding on it. he were divided into two groups while going through the store. It was a very interesting place. iiillkllfilklklkfkIklkiklkiklklklklklkilllllkikiklkikilrlk I K ahr, A 1 Y I L ,.: . wi- A O -v WI Q v 'H 1 ,Q .. The most important was basketball and our team had another successful season. We were the defending County Champions, but lost this crown to Kirkland in the semi- finals. Softball was the next interscholastic sport. Hav- ing sacrificed our diamond for the gym, we did not have a very successful season. The students who could not participate in basket- ball and softball were not 'forgotten. A volley ball court was planned on the stage. .ith hr. Marsh as re- feree, the game was interesting to players and observer The favorite sport of most girls was playing kick ball. This was played on the gym floor and was very easy for them to play. This game was exciting to all when the girls were playing against the boysg with Mrs. 'ortney'maching the girls and kr. Vi ard the boys. The manyl arguments were always won ty Mr. Vizard and his boys, who nearly always won the games. The students who were not interested in the sports played in the gym, were provided with a room in which they played ning-pong. This sport attracted the two yell leaders, Dick Stinnett and Junior Anderson, who competed with Nr. Mowrey. We are satisfied with a fine gymnasium for the in- foor s orts. The next step, we hope, will be additional ground to provide space for all the out-door sports. Me hope this will soon be added and the school will have a large playground. iiikiiiiiiirifiiililiillllllllllklilklkllliilkiilll I4. 9 III f . In the fall we gave a three-act play en- titled, UDON'T DARKEN HY QOORU. Max Cara, after mis- sing a lot of school, for some reason or other, decided to quit leaving a total of twenty-five to graduate. Our graduation exercise was April 22, 1941, and our Baccalurate was April 20, 1941. Our Farewell These four years we've spent together, United with bands that held fast, Have fled and those bands we must sever, Dear Senior, our school days are past. They are gone, our jolly times together, Our days of toil and hours of play, Only fond memories are vivid, As each of us must go our own way. Sad thoughts come creeping to our minds, To make us realize the trut , That our life is spreading before us, And driving away our youth. Farewell, dear old school and teachers, Farewell, each and all the rest, May we leave this memoir with you, And say me have done our best. Now we launch our craft uuon life's sea, HStrive for the bestn is our cry As our harbor, the school, is lost in the mist, To our cherished old school we bid goodbye. I went out to the airport and asked Dee Harmon to fly me back in his airplane. In less than an hour me were well on our way. Soon I noticed a large metropolis beneath us and that we were circling to land. I suapose we had to refuel but he said, Hihy no! That is Pleasant Mills.H Thy if I hadn t been strapped in l'm certain I would have f'llen out. I hain't been back since l9Al and naturallg was- n't anticipating such a change. I had kept in touch with Eoneta Hiller and so heard all about the time she cuit her jot at the G. L. to change her name to Shoaff and also about the twins whe were now about two years old. Naturally I went to her house because I knew she had always kept up with the nets. It was about j:CO in the afternoon when I drove L her beautiful drive. After our first happy greetings were over, I immediately started asking questions,Cas usuall. I wanted to know whrt had become of our grad- uating class and she preceded to tell me. HVell, I suppose you've heard thft Chester Hartz is in Het York working on a cartoonist novel with lots Cf illustrations. Mildred Shifferly finally married Delmar and they've made their home some place around Jefferson Center. Dick Noll was left Hout in the coldn so he went up in Canada and took over his uncle's ranch I guess its pretty cold up there, too. Carrxl Uovine has an ultra-podern garage up town and Joe Yailing lives in a lazy-man's house. All he has to do is push buttons for what ever he ants. Myrtle .Death is not a Captain's wife. I hear Richard Stinnett is selling iceboxes to the Escimoes and furnaces to the Africans. He's still working on the peraetual motion machine too. PACKHAUS On the 25th of October in H75H UHardly a man is now alive--H Sorry, I got off on the wrong words. I mean in 1923 instead of H75H, Well, to get back to the story. Marian's warents are Mr. and Mrs. Arnold R. Backhaus, Her hair is dark and wavy. Gray eyes and those pink cheeks combine to give a very pleasing picture. At least someone seems to think so. Her ambition is to be an air hostess but she does- n't seem to think that she will ever get that far, so to be a mathmatics teacher will be next btst. If she does become a hostess whe wants all the pilots to look like????. Of course, by just watching her for a short time you can see that her hobbies would naturally bgractive. They are roller skating and bicycle riding.' But rho wouldn't like skating if you had such a tall, dark, and handsome partner. Typing is her best liked subject, and no wonder,at the rate she can ty e. She has, of course, always been a bright student. In her spare time she likes to crochet and read. She should get along with her prosaective sister-in- law because Boneta likes to crochet, too. - Marian has had four years of athlectics, andis she a basket ball slayer! I'll say she is! Four years of music should enable her to sing some lovely Dutch lullaties. I asked for her description of her ideal man but she wouldn't commit herself except that he must look like a certain person. lou should guess who. The Yankees in China are foolish to stay there and be killed by bombs. Why don't they come home and be killed by cars like the rest of us. In Montana there is a town named Eurelia. Betty is the second child. When she was just a little girl her family moved to Fort Wayne. There she started to kinder- garden, but later moved back to Pleasant Mills where she will finish her good old school days. Bookkeeping was her best liked subject until she had to quit, so now it is typing. The thing she wants to be is a teacher or a minister, she hasn't made up her mind for sure, but I think it will be a minister. For pleasure she likes to drive the new Dodge. She has taken four years of music and has playef basket- ball for two years. Vivian: Where is the speedometer? Betty: I havn't any. I don't drive over 30. Vivian: How come? She seems to have learned a lot, because she is now ready for graduation. Myrtle's best liked subjects in school have been algebra, bookkeeping, and literature. I wonder if it's literature she likes or the entertainment she gets in that class. Her hobbies are reading 'nd walking. She also in- forms me that she likes to go hiking in her spare time. I think she likes 'to hike down to that army camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky. I wonder why????????????????????? Could it be that NHeH was in the draft???? We see he still thinks of her, because she's wearing a locket with an army emblem on it. He's sort of early with his graduation present, isn't he, Myrtle? Oh yes, I haven't told you what she looks like. Well, she has grown tt be five feet six and one half inches tall and weighs about one hundred thirty five pounds. She has blue eyes and light brown hair. One may meet her any time and expect a friendly smile. So There! It has been his ambition to become a transport pilot, but the only thing he flies is his car in Willshire. Herbert is a very intelligent boy, at times, he has done very well in school and his average grade is B. He has been playing basketball for three years on the first ten and because of his height has come in very handy. He has done exceptionally well on the squad during his Senior year and we are very glad for that. Herbert cecame a star in the Senior slay as Alec, the Gardner. Herbert and Marion, who played opposite him, were always scraping in fun during the practices. Weren't those enjoyable rides home after play practice, Sonny, esaecially that one night? Remember Marion? Herbert's test subject is literature and I think there is a reason far that. He is very courteous when he wants to te, and can be a very good escort, can't he, Deloris? Things won't be so noisy after USonnyN is gone--he has the knack of creating commotion. Herbert likes to read and play basketball. Me think that Herbert will be a success in whatever he is desirous of doing. Herbert Foor driving around in a much dilapidated mac?ine. Doc: what kind of a car have you got there. Foor: R. F. D. It happen ed to be a lvttle baby girl, and what a bundle of joy it proved to be. Their only regret was that she had red hair, because she was the first red head in the Gilpin generation. This little girl was named .after the wife of President Garfield. Her name must have been Lucretia, because that's the way she signs her autograph. Lucretia has now grown up into beautiful womanhood, She's about five feet, four inches tall and weighs one hundred twenty pounds. She has hazel eyes, still re tains that red hair. She also has those Hffrlingn freckles. Lucretia seems to have an excess amount of ambition, especially when she starts to talk and gig- gle. She has been given the name HRustyH, and does she ever like that! - At the age of five she started on her road to knowledge. This was started in Kansas City, Missouri. Later she entered Pasco High School in Kansas City as a Freshman. Her Sophomore year was spent in South East High School in Kansas City. During the spring of 1939, she with her mother and sister moved on a farm near Pleasant Mills, Indiana. This left her to spend her remaining school days in the Pleasant Mills High School. She tells me people put out flags and every body was having a gala time the day she moved. I'll give you a hint as to 'why. It so happened to be Flag Day. Lucretia is not only ambitious, but also very in- telligent. At least she must be when she makes an av- erage of HAH in her grades. The favorite subjects of NRustyH are art and ma?t any kind of science. CI wonder if she likes physics as well as I do?D She is also very active in sports, es- pecially when it comes to playing basketball. She has had athletics for four years and had music for two years. If ever you learn to know her, you will find her a very charming and very interesting person. I'm going to warn you,Othough, to be careful when her tem- per gets up to 212 . I think her hair accounts for that. Sentry: Halt! Who goes there! Lucretia: American! Sentry: Recite the first verse of the Star Spangald Banner Lucretia: I don't know it! He entered Pleasant Mills grade school in 1930 and has been a good Spartan ever since. He can always be recognized by his black Model A trimmed in green, and the black haired girl always with him. In the year of 1936, Dee entered high school a very small boy of thirteen and a very green Freshman. He went out for softball and held down the position of center field very well. He did not go out for basket- ball until his Sophomore year, but it didn't take longg to find out that he was a basketball player. He started at the bottom as a sub for the second team and by climbing the ladder a rung at a time, has reached the top and is now the Captain of the Spartan team of 40-41 During the vacation months Dee has been helping his father on the farm. He at times is a junk dealer. One time during the summer months Dee and some of his friends threw together some of the junk and made a stream-lined jalopy. They entered it in the Halloween parade. All the boys were masked, Dee as a clown in a bright orange clown suit. Dee, although a good singer, did not take music. His favorite songs are HI Haven't Time To Be A Million- aren and HPlaymatesH. He has several hotbies besides selling junk. He likes to crash parties, but doesn't like it when he is served furniture polish for refreshments. He likes to hunt, fish and farmg and from the rumors we've ieard, he's been playing Doctor. CMender of Broken Heartsl. Dee has a fine personality and is very popular among his schoolmates. He is an intelligent tasketball player, and likes to wear boots whether wet or dry. Dee's best liked sutiect is Commercial law and his ambition is to te an aviator. Hurry Holloway were visited by a long legged, white feathered bird. This stork, for so it happened to be, deposited on their doorstep a little curly-headed bundle of joy. This little boy set forth on the boat called Life and has navigated a straight course until the time has come for him to turn his ship to another channel. In other words he is to graduate from High School. All through his school life his favorite subjects have been physical education, physics, and sociology he's had 6 years of athletics. He had taken about a year and a half of trumpet, but along came the villian CTyphoid Fever? and caused such an interruption that Bob hasn't resumed his study. Home think Bob has bluffed his way through to get good grades without studying, but of course me Know he wouldn't think of such a thing. Oh, my goodness no. His vocation at the present time is that of ajunk dealer, but before long he hopes to become a tasketball coach. We're all rooting for him and think he has the ability. . L' . From the looks of things, as we at school see it, his ambition is to make that lovely blonde happy. As far as we know he's still doing all right. Uon't you think so, L. J. CHESTER MARTZ On the tenth day of December, 1921 in a little house one mile south and one mile east of Monroe, Ind- iana,Mr. and Mrs. Harry Martz were visited by the stork which brought a little toy, the second child of the family, by the name of Chester wartz. He is a Senior in High School, even though we dcn't see him very often in school. Chester's ambition is to join the Air Corps, but all the while in the back of his mind he is thinking about that little black haired girl from Michigan. His hobbies are reading Kes ecially those letters from Michigan! and traveling. He says his test liked subjects are art and typing but we all know why he likes those subjects tge test. he can draw her picture and get a good grade ror it and in typing he gets to write her a letter every meek. It sounds interesting, doesn't it? How akout it Chester? Of course he says he wants his voca+ion to te that of an Aviator. Personally we t ink it is to make Anna Hale happy the rest of her life. He has had three and one-half years of athcltics. He didn't get to play this year because of his age. Wrong Way Corrigan seemed to be his name one time last year after the game with Kirkland. With two years of music to his credit he should be able to sing several pretty serenades. The only thing that me can see that he does for recreation is look at Anna's picture and draw little hearts and go and see her once in a while. Remember the trip to Iiidianapolis? We do. Coming home tLe back seat must have been nice and comfortable. As for height there isn't much of him tut what there is isn't so tad. Blonde hair sets like a crown upon his head. His ears are like little pink sea shells. And Oh! tuose beautiful gray eyes. It was the birth of Juanita McBride. In recording they must have made a mistake because everybody around here calls her NButchU. At the age of six Butch thought she ras a grown lady, because it was then that she began to learn her A B C's and her l 2 3 4's. She has nearly completed her schooling and expects to graduate on April 22, 1941. Her favorite subjects have been Typing, shorthand, and arithmetic. Her average grade is A. She happens to be our chamion typist at P. M. H. S. During her school life she has had four years vocal music and two years piano. Those four years of vocal must have been benefi- cial, because she is quite an accomplished singer. Butch's greatest ambition is to learn to behave herself. Don't worry about that too much, Butch, because we wouldn't know what to do without your mischievousness In her spare time she likes to listen to the radio. Her favorite programs are the Kate Smith Hour and Fibber McGee including Molly. I think listening to NFibberU accounts for her Ntrickyn ways. Butch's ideal man must be tall, dark and handsome. According to rumors we'd say he's rather short. How about it Butch? Auch! I almost forgot to tell you what she looks like.- She is about 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighs about, about, about, about??? She von't tell her weight but we'd say 250. CLaugh that one offj She has gray eyes and a very pretty complexion. It had called unon the happily married couple twice before, leaving both times little boys, so they were glad this time to see a little girl. Boneta has a sister and two brothers younger than she, but at the time we are concerned only with Boneta. . At the tender age of six she started to school in the Bobo Metropolis. She couldn't get used to all the traffic but she liked to go to school. Years and years later when she had reached old Maiden-hood Cage fourteenj she entered Pleasant Mills High School. She liked high school even then. Her ambition, she says, is working in a ffctory but personally we think it has something to do with a cottage for two and maybe all those things that go with it. She likes to crochet and embroidery, but, of course they couldn't match those rose lamps she got for her birthday from???????????????????7 She seems to feel a little Shoafish when she is sewing all those pretty things. She must have told him she wanted their bed- room to be rose colored. She also likes to give readings and she has many times proved her ability along that line. We hope she will have some more opportunities to give some in our presence before she graduates. Her favorite subjects have always been home ec- onomics, public speaking, art, algebra, and bookkeep- ing. She has been a very nice person to have around this year because she always has her bookkeeping done and in circulation in time for every one to get an idea of how to work it. Her average grade of B shows us too, that she has shown her ability in school. Her vocation is to Hget the most out of lifen, which we are sure she will do. He began his schooling in fzrt Vayne and moved to Pleasant Mills when he was in the eighth grade. His best liked subjects through his school years havebeen tyoing, algebra, English, history and civics. His hotbies are collection souvenisrs, drawing Cmostly cartoonsj, skating and slaying table tennis. Out side of this he likes reading as a pass time. 1 am sure this will be helpful to him, Richard has the great ambition to le a mechanical draftsman. He took no cart in athletics although he seemed to be nimble enough, In his Senior year after the County Tourney the faculty decided he would make a good HYel1 Leaderu for basket ball. He was tried and has proved very successful. Richard is known among his school matss by several nicknames, such as Dick, Stinnett, and Skinner. Richard has made an average grade all through his school years and has not had much to do with the girls so I think he will te very successful. Moe: Do you know that a train chews tobacco ? Bo: No!
