Each conTesT broughT ouT The English skills learned by The sTudenTs and broughf The sTudenTs an awareness of Their skills and recogni- Tion for ouTsTanding performances in Those fields. Some of The conTesTs were The Spelling Bee, The Reading Week posTer ConTesT, The MS. Read-a-Thon, The Young Aufhors Convenfion and The Orafion con- Tesf. The popularify of The conTesTs was evidenT in The number of sTu- denfs who parficipafed in The meeTs and The seriousness in which The conTesTs were Taken. -.0-v .. The Language ArTs classes con- sisTed of The following uniTs: spelling, wrifing, grammar, compufers, sTudy skills, reading, liTeraTure, and ProjecT S.T.A.R. STudenTs were held ac- counTable for a masTery of selecfed secTions wifhin a uniT such as verbs or end puncTuaTion marks. This meanT ThaT for many sTudenTs exfra Time was spenT in sfudying for The TesTs To make ThaT accepfable score. Speakers were broughT in for special sfudies such as The holo- causT presenTers in The eighTh grade liTeraTure uniT. Videos and films ad- ded exciTemenT To The curriculum. A favorife of The eighTh graders was The Lady or The Tiger? and a fa- vorife of The sevenTh graders was 'ilvlurder in The Rue Morgue. Encouragemenf was also given To individuals who wished To enTer pub- lic wrifing conTesTs. STudenTs like Diane Burger received sTaTe recog- niTion for excellenf wriTing. The ACE classes achieved recognifion Through The FuTure Problem Solving Bowl.

This included wearing such eauipmenT as safeTy goggles and The forbidding of hor- seplay wiThin The classrooms. The lndusTrial ArTs class was of- fered Tor Those firsT Time sTudenTs in This area. They had The opporTuniTy To work wiTh several differenf medi- ums such as wood, meTal and ce- TuniTy To design Their dream homes build Them on scale models and en- Ter The final producTs in compeTiTion held aT BarTIe Hall. This was anoTher proud TradiTion PLJH has held and ThaT was winning This compeTion and wiping ouT The opponenTs. The Teachers accredifed This winning sTreak noT only To The TalenTed and dedicaTed sTudenTs, buT also To The eauipmenT and special rooms They had in which To complefe Their work. Team work was also a parT of These classes as sTudenTs worked on projecfs ThaT especially helped The school.
