The days were loaded with energy and yet, there was still time for solitude, to make friends, and to enjoy life. Together We made com- mittments faced disap- pointments, achieved goals. Pleasant Lee Junior High was a place to learn, to grow, and to meet friends. We had come from seven different ele- mentary schools With var- ied backgrounds and blended into a polished and compact unit. In these pages are our memories collected so that we may reminisce about the good old days. Two new assistant superin- tendents were hired, Dr. Grigsby and Dr. Crouch, to coordinate elementary and secon- dary education. The administration set the policies for the school district and spent a great amount of time visiting the different schools and learning the individual needs of each building. Various units were offered such as astronomy, chemistry, cell structure, and survival in natural di- aster situations. Each unit was de- signed so students might become aware of the causes and reactions be- hind their environment. Students had to adapt themselves to many different situations in class. Lectures were held which involved good note taking techniques. Partici- pation was expected in the labs as students did many experiments. Stu- dents learned the use of the periodic table, how to diasect an animal, and the use of the microscope. The course helped students pre- pare themselves for future science classes in high school and for use in their every day life. -, S .Q SS xp s 1 5 Science Teachers: Csittingl Mr. Gene Kenney, and Mrs. Naomi Burwell. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace and can advance only when they have obtained one hundred per- cent in their material. The highest level that can be achieved is Level 21. This level includes pre-algebra and algebra 1. This class is geared towards preparing a student for ad- vanced math courses in high school. During the year there are many math contests which are held during school. Any student can participate. The reading program at Pleasant Lea Junior High functions as an extension of the language arts program. Our major concerns is the reading skills. The reading skills emphasized are compre- hension, word-attack skills, and structural analy- sis. Development of writing skills is also provided through paragraph writing, book reports, and short answer quizzes. Spelling worksheets are de- veloped using words taken from various reading materials used in the class, and weekly spelling tests are given. Study skills are taught and em- phasis is placed on utilizing these skills in the content areas. Group instruction is utilized with special em- phasis placed on individual weaknesses. Students participate in both oral and silent reading fol- lowed by discussions and comprehension quizzes. Specific skills are presented by the teacher, and practice in these areas is provided through oral and written exercises. Extra practice is given to those students who have not mastered these skills. For the first time there were no A and B teams. Instead, the girls were rotated on both squads according to skills and improve- ments. This enabled every girl to have the chance to play on both squads and gave each girl more playing time. ' The squad, led by Mrs. Sharon Early and Mr. John Gross, had a successful year. This year we had a very enthusiastic group of girls. They were a pleasure to work with. The A-Team was undefeated and the B- Team lost only one game to Blue Springs , said Coach Gross. 1 ,,w.......,,,NlwW 'mq..,,0NM-w.vwvvu....,, P SVS vw rs at 'NDSQ Q' - Qs X A r S 8th Gr Shenkj Sz, i, X ss. iii? 3 ,,.s -Xt W MZ 43 z CROW i Rita J c al rf' 8th Grade Girls Basketball: iRow D Denise Roach fmanagerl. The school is proud of its fine record of students involve- ment in the various offered pro- grams. Every day students gave a part of themselves and helped make PLJH an exciting place to be. 15 Locker partners were tested for their patience, understanding, and quickness. 25 Eighth graders volunteered to help make Christmas decorations. 35 Christy Hedricks and Kelly Welsh participate in the participate in the book fair. 45 Making it to class on time kept everyone on their toes. 55 A visiting clown brought many smiles. 65 Our own clown prepares for an act. 75 The high school presents a French language assembly. 85 Excellent music was provided for the pep assembly. Locker combinations had to be memorized, classes had to be found, friends had to be made and choices had to be made. The word responsibility took on a whole new meaning. All students had to study mathematics, social studies, science, language arts, reading, and gym. Then students were allowed to choose between art, music, instrumental music, industrial arts or home economics. By the end of the year, each student had found his own group of friends and his own place in the Junior High. He discovered what it was like to work with twenty other strangers and pull together to make their homeroom the best. Sharing and caring were key factors in getting through this year. The school and the routines were now familiar and comfortable. And each seventh grader looked forward for their return as the new leaders in the fall. IJ Susan Collins answers a difficult question in social studies. 25 Each seventh grader made their own coat-of-arms. 35 Dale Jordan keeps busy in class. 41 Trying to find your way can be difficult and confusing! 1 Z 2 2 V A ajx , ...............v,-- -Q..-.....:1aJi.sq....-J.,..4.f- . .z4 N-' ff W Q- 5 S Y 7 N? 5 X IQ x lf?
