Of these nineteen, there are but ten left to graduate in the Class of '49. They are, namelyi Jo Chasey, Genevieve Waltenberger, Marcia Myers, Tom Rakestraw, John Gorrell, Helen Jackson, Eloise Anstett, Janet Landis, Jack Dutter, and Joyce Kankamp. Our first six years passed by us in a flurry of thrills and exciting adven- tures, that I am told occur in all young students lives. Our early learning can be credited to our grade teachers. The first six, were: hlrs. Oleva Watkins. Miss Opal Olinger, Miss Marie Anne Hoyer, Miss Helen Warring, Miss Mary Swynehart, and Mr. Dale Crow. When the school doors opened in 1943, we thought we were quite grown up because we are now upstairs. We have at this point collected two more mem- bers of our graduation class. They are Jonella Miller, from Fort Wayne, and Ralph Reinig from Pleasant Lake. During this first year upstairs, Judy Stoy, and Nora Budd also joined the ranks of our class. During these first two years upstairs we enjoyed many class parties. At the beginning of the school year of 1947, twenty members were ushered into high school. Norma Bright, formerly of Salem joined us at the beginning of the year. John Schieber of Elmerhurst joined us later in the year. Most of this year was spent getting acquainted with high school customs. In late Sept- ember, we were initiated into high school by the Seniors. We were made to do practically everything but the impossible. A reception was held in the school dining room that evening. A good time was had by all attending. Miss Neal, the Commercial teacher was our class sponsor that year. Our Sophomore year started off with a bang with Mr. Bright as our class sponsor. Ruth Pfingstag from Hudson, who had formerly attended Salem school joined us at the beginning of this year. Wilbut Ryan also put his name on our class roll during this year. We ordered our class sweaters in October which were to be maroon with white chenille letters. They came in the middle of September. We had two class parties this year. One was a high school skating party and other being a theater party. I guess we all lived up to our name the silly Sophomores, as all the boys either got a speech from Mr. Barton try- ing to explain that they were not members of the volunteer fire department, and therefore had no right to leave school for every fire, or a speech about skip- ping school. Most of the girls got accused of gabbing and passing notes. At the beginning of our Junior year Alma Hurt joined us from Indianapolis. We sold refreshments at the home basketball games, and had two paper drives. In October we ordered our class rings from the Josten Company. They were received on December Sth. ln early April we presented our class play, The Daffy Di1ls under the direction of Mrs. Marie Stancin, our class sponsor. On April 17th we took the Seniors to Fort Wayne to attend the Junior and Senior all county banquet. It was held at the Valencia Gardens. A delicious meal was served, after which a floor show was given followed by dancing. A good tirne was had by all attending. And then came this year! This is the year that we have all looked forward to for eleven years, and this year has probably added more gray hairs to the heads of our facultl' than any other year spent here. Several boys have partici- pated in basketball, and baseball. They are, namely: Norman Bright, Jo Chasey Wilbur Ryan, Ralph Reinig, John Gorrell, and Tom Rakestraw. 16 John Schieber has been manager of the basketball team for two years, and Ernie Lockhart, Janet Landis, and Jonella Miller had the privilege of being high school yell leaders this year. On November 19th we presented our class play, We Shook the Family Tree under the direction of John Glasgow, our class sponsor. We took a trip to Indianapolis to visit various places of inter- est in connection with the government class. It can be said very truthfully that there has never been a greener bunch of Freshrnen, a sillier bunch of Sophomores, a jollier bunch of Juniors, and above all, a more dignified bunch of Seniors. It is with regret that we bid farewell to the school that has been a constant part of our lives for the past eleven years. We hope that our underclassmen and teachers as well, will miss our comradeship as much as we will miss theirs. NOON ACT IVIT Y PROGRAM Under the supervision of Mr. Milhollin and Mr. VanMatre, a noon activities program has been planned, which takes place in the school gymnasium each noon hour. There are games for everyone from the first grade to the twelfth grade. For younger children there are such games as relays, and games with Indian clubs, and basketballs. For the high school students, the school has pur- chased a new ping-pong table. Several students have enjoyed doing the schottische dance, on the stage, when music is provided. Much credit should go to Mr. Milhollin and Mr. Vanlviatre for the work they have put in on the plans for this program and making it such a great success. 17 CLASS WILL I, Eloise Anstett, will and bequeath my Metz boys to Mary Ann Brayton and my yelling to eighth grade girls. The Senior Class 18 SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY OF 49 As l look in the far future I see the Seniors of 49 in their appointed places on this great old mother earth. Eloise is living at Metz with her husband. They live on a farm and have four boys and one girl. She is married to Claude Wisner. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Chasey are vacationing in Flordia. Joe is Vice-President of the Angola Pet Milk Company. Mrs. Chasey is the former Dorothy Smart of Fremont! John Schieber is at the present on trial for reckless driving in Detroit. It seems John was going under eighty-five in town. Johnnie sells used cars in Detroit. Joyce Kankamp is in New York City working as the Manager of the Kroger store. She is engaged to Oscar Barrelhoop, the localplay boy. Alrna is living in Pleasant Lake and has held the position of secretary and assistant principal for quite a number of years. She will retire in due time and spend her time on her stamp collection. Ernie Lockhart is married to the Bearded Lady in the Wringling Brothers Circus. They are traveling from town to town with the circus. Ernie is the conductor of the Merry-Go-Round except when they need him to take the place of the famous Fire Eater who gets indigestion quite often. I quote from Janet Landis I am through with men and am going to be a happy old maid and raise my children to be the samei? Janet is moving west where she will be left alone. Genevieve and her husband, Gene Hamman, are living in Pleasant Lake Where they own and operate their Lake Bank Beauty Parlor. It seems Ruth and Marcia just can't depart from each others fond em- braces. They are living together in Ashley where they own an antique store. Judy Stoy just can't make up her mind. She was married for the fifth tirne and is living in Lower Slobvia. Jack Dutter is living in the western part of the country. It has been said that he has the largest cattle ranch in them thar parts. He was married to an Indian squaw last month. Tom Rakestraw is known the world over for his precision driving on the Indianapolis Speedway. He has placed first for five straight years. He drives for the Bugle Spark Plug Company. J Helen Jackson is teaching school and leading a quiet life in the Mississippi Valley. Her husband and she.own a small farm there. Norma Bright is at the very present pressing charges against the Omar Taxi Company. Charges are that they have run four of the cabs off the road in order to put him out of business. He is engaged to Lorthy Damoor the Broad- way play girl. 19 Jonella and her husband are happily married and are living about three miles west of Pleasant Lake Qnorth side of roadj on their cozy farm. She has fifty students who are coming along swell with their harmonica lessons. John Gorrell is married and owns a thriving dry cleaning business. He is fol- lowing his brothers footsteps. The construction of his used car lot and his super duper garage will be completed in a few weeks. Nora's husband has just filed for a divorce on the grounds of cruel treat- ment. He claims she pulverized him the other night because he said she couldn't wrestle. She is the wrestling champion of Siam. Wilbur has just taken his wife's father's position in the Ashley High School as agriculture teacher. His wife the former Laurinda Libey is teaching a Sunday School class at the Steubenville Chapel. Glasgow the former sponsor of the Senior Class of '49 has retired from teaching and is happily hunting, fishing, and loafing at Moonlight Bay. SENIORS TRIP TO INDIANAPOLIS How sixteen, members ofthe Senior Class ever managed to chase the Sandman away, and crawl drowsily out of bed at 2:30 a.m. for earlierj on the eventful day of February IS, is still puzzling many. Not that SENIORS are incapable of staying in circulation after having had from two to five hours of sleep the night before! That's not what I mean at all. But the fact that that they could keep awake for the fol- lowing twenty-three hours, sleep for six, and rise bright-eyed and energetic the next morning is something worth noting. We were also accompanied by Mr. Vanlvlatre, our teacher of civics, and Olin Favorite, along with Carl Wymire, who took turns driving the bus. Our first stop was Bluffton, where we investigated the Wells County Court House and ventured across the street for coffee and cocoa. We arrived at Ball State College around 9:30. after eating breakfast in Muncie. We were shown the swimming pool inthe gymnasium and also es-. corted through the art gallery, which has one of the finest collections in the state. W0 spent a limited amount of time in the- Anderson High School gymnasium, watching a class doing calisthl-nirs. Upon reaching Fort Benjamin Harison, a sergeant accompanied us, in order to point out various points of interest. We reached Indianapolis in time for dinner: the majority of the group eating at Sevilles. After this we had a little time to amble through Block's and Ayer's before meeting in the State House. We visited both houses of Leg- islature while they were in session. Willis Batchelet and Dudley Gleason announced our presence in the Senate and the House of Representatives. Mr. Batchelet had a bill before the Senate which he was very concerned about. He was anxious to meet each individual of our group. Mr. Batchelet also in- formed us that we were the first group from a school in our county ever to visit the houses in session. After leaving the State House we went through the State Library. The librarian showed us their collection of books in Braille and folders of sound recordings for the blind. We were all disappointed to find that the Soldiers' and Sailors Monu- ment was closed, so after some dis- cussion, it was decided to start home eating at Wheeler's enroute. Our journey home was uninter- rupted except for the time we ran out Of gas south of Fort Wayne, but we reached home at lZ:00, tire-d but happy. H r 1 I-T X I BASKET BALL The first game oi the season was with Orland, and this game brought victory to the Pleasant Lake Spartans and their new coach, Mr. Milhollin. The score of this game was 54-31. The Spartans did real well the first five games knocking off Metz 31-20. Salem 39-37, and then getting beat by Fremont 41-40. Then traveling to Ashley to beat them 35-33. Bright, Chasey, Ryan, Cook and Myers seemed to be a winning cornbination at the first of the year, but Mr. Milhollin got sick and a change of coaches was made for awhile, fthe new coach being Mr. VanMatre who took over the second team and helped on the first team when Mr. Milhollin came back.j After this the boys just seemed to drop off, getting beat by WaterlooI42-46, and only beating Hamilton by a slim margin of 26-28, and getting beat by Spencerville Z7-56 and then losing another game to Salem 47-58. By this time the blind tourney was coming around and Pleasant Lake drew Orland for the first game, beating them 30-31, and Fremont beating Metz. At the night session Fremont beat Pleasant Lake 35-69. At the county tourney Pleasant Lake drew the bye. They then played Metz and got beat 51-60. After the county tourney we played Metz again and got beat in a double over- tirne of 46-48. The Spartans then beat Scott Center 48-53 and also beat Orland 37-48. They then traveled to St. Joe to beat them 54-40. The last game of the season was with Fremont and the Spartans played good steady ball all the game, beating Fremont 52-51. ' In the sectional Pleasant Lake dred Salem Center and got beat in a hard fought game of 38-43. The average points per game for the season was 41.5 points per game. The opponents average was 42.0 points per game. The record was ten wins and ten losses. The second team had a good season, winning eleven and losing five. First Team Second Team PL OPP. There was nothing to be excited about, he said. I took my time about dressing, lighted a cigarette, didn't like the knot in my necktie, so tied it over again that's how cool I was. Fine, one of his friends re- marked, but why didn't you put on your pants? Jack Chrysler: I wonder who the telegram is from? Jim Haufman: Western Union. I recognize the handwriting. Nancy Wolf: What is a skel- ton? Leroy Meek: A man with his insides out and his outside off. A certain manager was to ad- dress a convention. Unable to reach his destination on account of a flood which washed away a portion of the railroad, he sent this message: Cannot come. Washout on the line. Back came the answer: Borrow a shirt and come any how. Joyce Kankamp: Does this wind, bother you? Judy Stoy: UNO. Talk all you please. There isn't much to see in a small town, but what you hear makes up for it. Stout woman to little boy: I say there, can you tell me if I can get through this gate to the park? I guess you can. A load of hay just went through. You can't fly all night with the owls and keep up with the eagles, in the day- tirne. Living at home Living at La Fayette Living at home Attending Ball State College at Muncie A pious and very homely spinster was accosted by a staggering drunk. Lady, he said, You're the ugliest person I ever saw. And you, sir, replied the spinster are the drunkest man I ever saw. Maybe so, lady, countered the drunk, but I'll be okay tomorrow. I had a fall last night which ren- dered me unconscious for several hours. You don't mean it? Where did you fall? I fell asleep. The naughty little girl had been put in the clothes closet for punish- ment. Finally the stern but anxious mother opened the door and peered in. What are you doing in there? she asked. From the darkness came the answer: I'm thpittin on your new hat. I'm thpittin on your new dreth, I'm thpittin on your thatin Thlipperth and---and ---- . There was a breath- less pause. Now I'm waitin for more thpit. Doctor fmeeting Mrs. Jones on streetzj How is your husband now? Did you give him the sleeping powder? Mrs. Jones: Yes, you told me to give him the amount I could get on a dime, but I didn't have a dime, so I used two nickels and he's been asleep now for four days. Please, please, darling, use both hands, the gal screamed as her boy friend drove along the curved road at 70 mph. Gosh, Babe, he replied, I wish I could, but I have to steer with one. She: What are you thinking about? He: The same thing you're think- ing about, I imagine. She: If you do, I'll scream. 55 1 f?
