From the beginning twenty-nine, there are but eleven left to graduate in this class of l9L+6g namely, Lois Fuller, Evelyn Penick, Phyllis Enfield, Lavon lmhoff, Birdenia Tritch, John Libey, Margaret Brand, Robert Meek, Richard Gorrell, Robert Griffith, and Floyd Deetz. B Our first eight years at Pleasant Lake passed us by in a flurry of thrills and exciting moments of all young, Stud- ents' lives. Most of our early learning can be credited to our grade teachers. The first six were Miss Bess LanSf0Fd, Miss Arlene VanAuken, Miss Flora Charles, Miss Lois Replogle, Miss Mary Swynehardt, and Mr. Anthony Blomeke. Cur seventh and eighth grade sponsor was Miss Victorine Paul. In September of 1942, we found ourselves enrolled as Freshmen, Cand Man, were we greenl. Our C1855 SPOHSOI' thls year was Orville Griffith. During the first eight years we had acquired several new students: namely, Eddie McAlpin, Ima Lee Wade, Marjorie Thompson, and Bernard Shawg also sev- eral had joined at the beginning of our Freshman year. They were Sam Collins and LaMarr Kressley, from Hudson and Eu- gene Creager of Metz. We elected class officers, who were Richard Gorrell, president, Ima Lee Wade, Vice-president, and Lois Fuller, Secretary-treasurer. We were initiated into high school by the Seniors of l9h3, and thus we considered ourselves full- fledged members of the high school, and we were very proud of this Nhonor of rank.W Nora Strup, formerly of Salem, and Franklin Brock, of Sidney, Ohio, entered our class during our Freshman year at P. L. H. S. although Eugene Creager withdrew. We had our quota of class parties during this year and enjoyed them all to the fullest extent. Several of the boys were representatives on the basket- ball and baseball teams,and one of the girls was chosen for high school yell leader with two of the Sophomore girls. By the time we were Sophomores we were more wise and con- fident of a greater success. Miss Winifred Berlien became our class sponsor, taking the place of Mr. Griffith, who re- signed to take a position in Ft. Wayne. We elected our class officers, who were Floyd Deetz, presidentg John Libey, Vice- presidentg and Robert Meek, secretary-treasurer. Evelyn and Lynn Brooks, from Ashley joined our class at the beginning of this year. ln the fall of 19th we became the Jolly Juniors of P.L. H. S. and more than lived up to the name. Margaret Kunce,from Brighton signed her name on our Junior register, as did Ro- bert Ferris formerly of Ashley school. Franklin Brock left us to enter the services of the U. S. Navy. Our class officers this year were: Ima Lee Wade,Pres- identg Marjorie Thompson, Vice-president, and Lavon Imhoff, secretary-treasurer. We received our class rings in November and we were all very much pleased, On March 23, we presented our class play, WProffessor, How Could You?n which was well liked by everyone. After all of the expenses were paid, we found we had cleared 365.CO. Senior Class History CCont.l On April l3, with the Juniors of all the other county schools, we took the Seniors to the Junior-Senior banquet at Pokagon Park. We all had a very enjoyable evening. On April 25, the last day of school, we held a final Junior class gathering at Pokagon State Park, thus lowering the final curtain for the Juniors of '45, Four months later the curtain rose again, revealing the 'DignifiedN Seniors of 'A6. We again had Miss Berlien as our class sponsor. Two new students joined our class in the final year at Pleasant Lake. They were June Beard,from Butler,and Mildred Blomeke,from Wa- terloo. Lynn Brooks withdrew at the beginning of the year. Early in the year, we elected our class officers. They were Floyd Deetz, PresidentgEddie McAlpin,Vice-presidents and Lois Fuller, Secretary-treasurer. Our first class party was an all high school skating party at Silver Moon Rink, which was sponsored by the Soph- omore class. On October lO, we went to the Cron-Leone Studios at Ft. Wayne and had our pictures taken. The proofs came the next week. The choice was made, and the proofs were returned to the studio. On December 3, the pictures came,and after the usual nahsn and nohsn the results were as good as could be expected. We held a Christmas party on December 22 at the home of John Libey. We had a potluck supper and exchanged gifts.The rest of the evening was spent playing games and gabbing. All of the basketball boys participated in the blind tournament on New Year's Dey at Fremont. The boys succeeded in winning the trophy for the l9L5-L6 season. A week later they made plenty of show in the Steuben Country Tournament,but were defeated in the first game. On February 8, we presented our class play, HHilarity Housen to a well-pleased audience. After all of the expen- ses were paid, we had cleared 367.50. After the play, we had a big celebration at the Gay Barn. During the latter part of February, Miss Berlien became ill and Mr. Orville Griffith came to take her place in teach- ing. Early in February we ordered our invitations. Several of the boys received basketball sweaters for their great basketball ability. We had several of our members in the band, chorus, and nearly all were members of the Spar- tonian Staff. We had a very enjoyable time at the Junior-Senior Ban- quet during our last days at P. Lake High Sehool. During our final week of school we had a final Senior gathering before leaving school. It was a picnic at Pokagon State Park. Thus, the Senior Class of l9L6 leave behind us twelve of the most momentous years we shall ever know. We can never find words to express our thanks and appreciation to Miss Berlien for her fine co-operation during the three years that she has been with us. We only hope that our underclassmen and teachers have enjoyed our comradeship throughout our twelve years here, and will miss us during their stay at Pleasant L We wish to thank all of our teachers for their help and kind- ness during our school years. She had gone here before, but she had moved away and just came back this year. She previously attended school at Gro- vertown, Ind. The class started out the year by electing. the class officers. We ordered our class rings on October 16, and received them on the llth.ofbJanuary. We ordered them of Herff- Jones Co. and are very well satisfied with them. We ordered class sweaters in the month of November and received them in December. They are royal blue and white. A letter P has a white background with a royal blue front. The numbers 47 are in the lower loop of the P , On October 50, we had a Halloween Festival, sponsored by the Seniors. We had charge of the refreshment stand and a cake walk. We cleared about SS42.50. Our first class party was an all high school skatingw party sponsored by the Sophmore class. All six upper grades were invited. Our second class party was a Christmas party hold at the homo of Phyllis Ulmer, on December Zlst. We cf-exchanged gifts. We presented the gifts to the guests and to our class- mates. During the first part of November we lost one of our classmates, when Betty Hart withdrew. As a class project we sold pop, ice cream, and hot dogs at all of the home basketball games, We have made a lot of money for the class this way. We decided to give the Senior class a banquet.i Wo. are to go in with the county schools to have one banquet for all of the schools together. The banquet will be held at Sturgis Kichigan at the Hotel Elliot. Our class representative for the banquet is Marjorie Libey. This circus form- erly owned by Ringling Brothers,has been purchased by two of my former classmates, Sam Collins and Bob Meek. 5 Upon entering the WBig Topn to my amazement I saw John Libey, now the world's most famous Lion-Tamer,entertaining a vast crowd that had gathered around to witness the perfor- mance. Being of the mystic nature, I wandered next to the fortune teller's tent. I asked her to tell me what had be' come of the class of h6.W g It was most amazing how she described my old friends to me and then she gave me their addresses, so I might visit them. Though there was one thing incomplete, she had not mentioned the name or whereabouts of our class sponsor, So I asked her where she could be found. Hesitating she lifted her black veil, and to my surprize, I saw Miss Berliene So after hearing the predidtions of the Madam Berlien, I decided to follow her 'will o'the wisp' directions and see for myself, as she had seen in her crystal ball, and meet old friends. First upon my list, I was directed to a vine covered bungalow, I saw a frail withered little old lady sitting on the porch--she's alone except for two cats and a canary bird. Well! It's Evelyn Brooks--she's still undecidede As I retreat from this domestic setting I find number two on my list, being described as Dutch Deetz-to whom many young husbands of the l95O's are singing their praises to. He is in charge of a cooking school for bridesf Thus Margaret Kunce, who is now the Home Economics teacher at our Alma Mater. 2And she too is a former pupil of The Chief Dutch Deetz Cooking School for Brides. As I now amble down the old familiar corridors I hear a vibrant, but now a little higher pitched voice, my atten- tion is attracted to Mr. Fee. After all these years, who could raise his Nireu--Oh, it's Bob Ferris, I see he's stil being late, only now he's office assistant to Mr. Fee. I now turn to leave, and as I decend these much treaded stairs I see a handsome new trophy case displaying :ups of, by-gone years,ahd this was willed to the school by Dick Gore rell, a wealthy young bachelor who died of broken heart,' Seems as though some romeo had stolen the affenctions of Jonella Miller--so the story goes. I now close the doors of the little red school house, and hear childrens' voices as they scamper home from school They are a group of boys in sailor's dungarees, going toward a colorful house. As I now looked at my address book, I see these toys are going to the residence of Mrs. Ed Joseph- sen, the former Lois Fuller. I enter her home and she is goe ing to catch a matinee at the local theater. She invited me to accompany her. She called her children and I thought there was something familiar in the name as she said---come and go over to Aunt EOHHIGUS. Thus as we leave the children at . . a pleasant cottage, I noticed a small plaque saying, NLeave your children at Aunt Bonnie Imhoff's, Pleasant LaKe's most ree liable baby sitter. Some new music books, 'America Singsn, were purchased and are very good. The group made one public appearance which was the program at Christmas time. They sang several numbers for this program. Everyone hopes that there will be more opportunities for other public appearances in the coming year. The girls brought baEk many prizes from the fair. Total amount in prize money was about sse.ec. The girls of the 4-H Clubs wish to thank Miss Butler for her help and co-operation in our work that she has given us in the past year. ee eeeeeeqewf- L SPARTIONIAH STAFF This year theSpartonian, the school paper, had as its stafi a new and inexperienced group to carry through the work of weekly publications. Although the staff had had some of the responsibility of the previous year, the first weeks of work for the spar- tenian were long and weary, but the final goal was reached and the finished publications were worth our work. Miss Iary Heal was our faculty advixor. She was assist- ed by the editor, deb Meek, the business manager, Sam Coll- ins, and the advertising manager, Floyd Deetg as well as the rest of the staff, Advertising was resumed after a lapse of several years. The Spartonian was entirely self-supporting this year by the means of advertising, subscriptions, and extra mimeographing jobs for various individuals and organ- izations. he had three parties during the school year. The first was a hayride at Tokagon State Park, the second was a Christ mas party at hiss Hoal's home in Angola, and the last was a picnic at Colden Lake, We all believe that as the Spartonian Staff of 1945046 we have fullfilled ourduties on the paper as well as ever before, and hope that the Staff of 1946-47 do as well. Sam Collins was the regular pitcher while John Libey and Bob Meek did the catching. First baseman was Bob Griffith, while Dick Gorrell did a good job at short. In the Sectional Tour- asketball season with a scoring shows Griffith ahead of the group with 235 points in 17 games with an average of 13.8 points per game and Collins second with 22h points in 19 games with 11.8 points per game average. Griffith's natural eye for making baskets was a great aid to his record, and Sam' ability to score with the opponent's best guards on him,makes his record to be admired. While scoring baskets is necessary, some players are given definite assignments for preventing the opponents from score ing. Of these Meek,Monntz, and Libey took care of these asa signments very well and the remainder of the squad also helps ed. Credit is to the guarding as well as the offensive work of a team in summarizing the season's record. Many fans and students do not realize this importance of defence and play - making along with scoring.
