The graduating class of 1978 had two things unique about them. With 106 seniors graduating, this was the largest class to ever grad- uate in the history of Pleasant Hill High School. Also this was the first class to graduate under the new competency requirements. The class flowers were Roses and Carnations. The Ascensions sang 'Times of Your Lifew, the class song. The motto,,created by Scott Woodland, was The great thing in this world is not so much where we are as in what direction we are goingf' Boyal Blue, Light Blue, and White dominated as the class colors. Speeches were given by the top seniors in the class. Two of their money-raising projects, selling carnations at the Sweetheart Ball and sponsoring movies at noon flopped, leaving them in debt. However, the Class of '79 made a come back with activities such as a Dance- a-thon and a Bowl-a-thon. Their hard work paid off, enough money was raised to ensure a terrific prom. All these projects materialized at what Mr. Griggs called wild, uncontrollable meetings. CLUBS 57 FHA Future Homemakers of America, or FHA, had a very busy year. Their projects at the first of the year included being pep pals for the girls volleyball team, adopt- ing grandmothers from Twi- light Acres Rest Home and sending them Christmas gifts. They also sent African violets later for Easter. Later, on in the year, they pro- vided lunch for the Pleasant Hill Speech Tournament. They also served refreshments to parents at the Open House. Their act- ivities were financed by furnish- ing a dinner for a dinner theatre and selling cookbooks. Half of the proceeds'from the auction went to the club's funds which they used to aid the Athletic Depart- ment. Later on in the year, they had a bottle drive to finance a Letter- men's dinner. Officers: President- Brad Waggonerg Vice President-Eric Chastain, Treasure-Neil Heinz. Hi-Q Hi-Q, led by team captain, Frank Hladky, came in second in a league of six schools qualifying them to later compete with the top two schools from each league for the title. Later, in April, the club accepted a challenge from the KUGN Mellow Yellow. The Hi-Q team lost, but only by one question. Concert Band The Concert Band started out nice and easy this year, with the Fall Concert, then, on to the Christmas Concert. But Concert Band really has the spirit, approximately 30 out of the 46 members devoted their time to performing in the Pep Band at the various Pleasant Hill games. To wind up the year, they also performed at the Winter and Spring Concerts. Along with the two concerts, they went on a tour and also competed in a few solo ensemble contests. MUSIC 65 Stage Band Stage Band has really been busy this year. To start it all off, they had three or four concerts to do during the whole year. They held the Second Annual Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival at Pleasant Hill. Also, the Band made several different trips away from the school. The Band went to Vancouver, Washington, and a trip to Bandon, Ore., in which they did not compete. Even though they were busy, they still had a fun and exciting year. Captains Jeff Greer and Brad Waggoner crowned Senior Leslie Sharp as Homecoming Queen. She was presented with a bouquet of red roses. The crowning took place during the half-time of the Pleasant Hill-Oakridge football game. Then they took the trip long waited for, a nine day tour to California. The tour was packed with things to do and see. Universal Studios, China Town and Dis- neyland were among a few places they visited. They performed at four schools in the Los Angelos and San Francisco area and at Disneyland. PROIVI 93 94 CAMP LANE Camp Lane Week 1 Camp Lane is the outdoor school for fifth graders and high school students are used as counselors. The counselors are picked by interviews and then attend several classes prior to camp to go over their lesson plans for the classes they teach at camp. The classes include Water Study, Animals, Plants, and Soil. The afternoon classes are First Aid, Survival, and Map and Compass. The week isn't all work, there is also a little time for fun. a. They made signs for games and had things baked to give to the players after practice. She has been a cheerleader for two years previously. Deg Debbie was also the only one of the four girls able to attend rally camp in the summertime. Dance Team got off to a slow start during football season. Then basketball start- ed up and Dance Team started to move. Move is exactly what they did. Some of their most memor- able routines were Night Fever and Roller- coaster . They performed at nearly every football game and only missed one basketball game. 'They also put on a Pep Assembly. W Q0 Q l Qs hr- Varsity Football The Billie Football Team did not have a winning season this year, but the team worked hard and played as a whole unit. The Billies were in a tough position this year with the new Sky-Em league formed matching the old Skyline teams of South Umpqua, Douglas, Sutherlm and Glide against the dissolved Emerald League teams of Marist, Creswell, Oakridge, and Pleasant Hill. Out of this league came the state champion, South Ump- qua team. Marist, also a member of the Sky-Em league was rated no. 8 in the state. The co-captains for the Billies this year were Jeff Greer and Brad Wag- goner. Offensive guard Jeff Greer and defensive lineman Brian Miles were selected 2nd team All-League, and Brad Waggoner, Bobby George, and Kevin Cumiford received All- League Honorable Mention. With sophomore Kevin Morris leading the way with a 10th place finish in the district final, the young harriers finished fifth ln the lea gue, which was dominated by the Southern schools of the newly-formed Sky-Em league. At the fall cross country banquet, junior Kent Boles, the most consistent runner, was named Most Valuble Player. Sopho more Kevin Morris received the Most Improved award from Coach Bob Darling. For the second time ever, there was a girls cross country team. Student tea- cher Pat Rarrick, volunteered his ser- vices to coach them. CROSS COUNTRY Varsity Basketball The Billies with seven lettermen, ran up a 5 win-3 loss record early in the season. Most of the way through league, the Bill had a medicore 4 win-6 loss record, but, won four in a row to wrap up third place in the league and gain momentum going into the league tournament. The Billies had an overall successful season but failed to gain a bid to the state tournament. They finished third in the tough Sky Em League with a 8 win-6 loss record in league play. First and second teams in the league were Marist, which won first place, and Douglas which won fourth place at state. After regualr league play, all the teams in the league participated in the Sky-Em tournament to determine which teams would represent the league in the state tournament. Pleasant H1ll's first opponent was South Umpqua which they defeated 60-57. In semifinal action they ran intt the tough Douglas Trojans who knocked the Billies out of the tournament 69-55. At the winter sports banquet, awards were given to the following: Senior Goug Graham for Most Inspirational Player Junior Randy Klohn was named Most Improved, Senior Roger Condos was named Most Valuable Player. Round-Ballers had a disappointing season this year, but it wasn't all bad that came from it. While the overall record was 5-17, most of the games were close. It seemed the team just could not put a whole game together. They would play a good first half and then blow it the second, or vice-versa. Varsity Girls Basketball The girls Varsity Basketball team had a disappointing season this year because of injuries. Despite all this, the team showed their willingness to win. On two occasions they pulled out close games, beating Oak- ridge, 30-27, and South Umpqua, 47-46. The team was lead by Debbi Eklund, the only veteran. The team was young and full of enthus- iasum this year. They should all return nest year and start to turn into a very good group of wrestlers. Special honors were received by Jeff Greet and Brad Waggoner when they received invitations to go to Medford and try out for a wrestling team that would travel to Iran this summer. With mostly underclassrnen on the team, they look forward to a much improved performance in the next couple of years. The team was led by a new comer to the program, senior transfer Christine Buehler, along with gallant sprinters Linda Morris and Becky Smith. Throughout the season, dependable Christine Buehler brough home a first place in almost every hurdle race she ran. In the end, this paid off with a second place finish at district in the 110 meter hurdles and a trip the the State Meet at Mount Hood Community College. Linda Morris and Becky Smith oftern strengthened the depth of the team by competing in three or four events in every meet. At the post - season picnic which was held at Japer Park, special awards were given to Linda Morris and Christine Buehler for Most Valuable Shana Wright and Vicki Fox for Most Improved, Cory Kilgore for Most Inspirational. Freshman Shana Wright runs a smart race in the hurdles to place a surprising fourth at district. TRACK Billie Track ' 8 SKY-E Champions The '77 - '78 track team had an excellent season this year. First, they won the District Dual Meets Compe- tition with an undefeated record of 6 wins and 0 losses. Next on the list, they won the District Meet at Marist by a wide margin. Now it was on to the big time, the State AA Meet. The people qualifying for the State meet put in a week of hard practice and then headed for the State level competition at Mt. Hood Commu- nity College at Gresham. They turned in an excellent performance placing 6th in the State. One of the other major events of the season was win- ning the Oakridge Invititional Meet an Oakridge. From this meet, the team brought home the magnificent first place trophy which is on display in the trophy case in the gym.
