The nucleus of a The girls' basketball team, under comet has never been seen, but scientists believe it has a rocky core. Halley's Comet got its name the direction of Coach Oran Jennings, met in their dressing room and chose the school mascot, and it has remained so from British astronomer Edmund till this day. The school colors in Halley who studied earlier sightings before predicting a major comet appearing in late 1758. The comet did appear on Christmas Day 1758. Halley's return coincides now and then with major historical events. William the Conquerer won the Battle of Hastings in 1066 while it was in the night sky. Mark Twain was born during its 1835 appearance and '36 were blue and red, and the basketball teams wore blue uniforms with red comets on them. The date the colors were changed to maroon and white is unknown. The return of the Pleasant Grove Comets also coincides with historical events. During the 1985-86 school year President Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev held the predicted that he would die when Geneva summit which hopefully will lead to improved U.S.fSoviet relations. Boomtown Rats singer Bob'C-eldof helped organize aid for Africa's famine victims, most notably the Live-Aid concerts in London and Philadelphia. On the homefront singer Willie Nelson helped the struggling farmer by organizing Farm-Aid concerts. The year definitely had many positive features including athletes overtaking records, and the University of Oklahoma football win over Penn State in the Orange Bowl which led to O.U. being named national champs. Though many tragedies occurred in the world this year there still was always something to smile about in THE YEAR OF THE COMETS - not the least of which was the return of Halley's Comet itself. At Pleasant Grove the ratio is approximately 13 students to 1 teacher. This enables each person to become well-known to others and receive extra help when necessary. In addition to advantages in the classroom, our smaller classes allow us to take many trips-also an lv my . important part of a well-rounded education. These industrious workers include the administration and staff. These people give 10096 to insure that the school is run as efficiently as possible. Their support is felt not only during school hours but also at ball games, school dances, and other extra-curricular activities, all of which demonstrate their concern and interest in Pleasant Grove School. All of them go the extra mile to make this school the best place to be. WHAT'S UP?? Principal's secretary, Janis Hood, always looks up even when things are down. In the senior class, 100 percent have a relative who has graduated from Pleasant Grove or who is currently attending. Though the percentage in other classes may not be that high, it is still very high in every classroom. The most frequent relationship is brother-sister, but parent-child is also found often. Twenty-five percent of the seniors have parents who attended Pleasant Grove, and some of the seniors have nieces and nephews who are now attending. In addition, several faculty and staff members have children currently attending here. Although everyone does not have a relative going to Pleasant Grove, they can still feel a kinship with their classmates that might not be possible in a larger school. ALL IN THE FAMILY. Daisy Marshall, who has worked at Pleasant Grove 16 years as a teachers' aid, is surrounded by her children: Katie, kindergarten, jesse, freshman, and Crissy, junior. This page is sponsored by Sherman, Billie, and Keith Whitley A FAMILY TRADITION. Life does not end at 3:00. When the last bell rings, school work and assignments are temporarily forgotten as students rush away to take part in a variety of activities. Some have jobs while others enjoy dabbling in the arts of many, more sedate pastimes. For athletes, basketball season is a very busy time. They spend many of their evenings practicing and competing in games. Basketball Guard, DeLynn Eddlemon says that, Adjusting FTER THE to a new team and a new coach has been a difficult but rewarding experience. Several students are involved in sports other than those sponsored by the school. For instance, Kenny Hernandez plays softball on the same co- ed team as his motherp Chad Abney enjoys the wonderful sport of fishingg and Abby Brown plays independent basketball with several students from other schools. Many other students enjoy such sports also. ALRICHT! SCHOOL IS OUT! The students of Pleasant Grove rush out of the building after the last bell rings to signal the end of another school day. OH WHAT RUBBISHE Leandra Reed takes her time cleaning up the trash in the teacher's lounge. She sets aside a small portion of her time after school to help clean the school building. This page is sponsored by joe and Anita Reed. Many students that have jobs don't have time for these kinds of activities. Mark Smithee, who works at Bestyet, goes to work at 4:00 and has barely an hour to get ready. His comment about this is, I wish I could go to work two hours later but the extra hours really come in handy on payday. Maria Stanfill works at Smitty's Coin- Op on Main Street. DeLynn Eddlemon works as a cashier at Wal-Mart. Richard Harris works at Polo's Restaurant. LAST BELL Homework is also a part of each student's activities after school each day. It has to be done but is usually put off until the last minute. When the next day's classes begin some students will still be hurrying to get their homework finished to hand in. When asked why he always puts off his homework, freshman Randy Cook stated, If I do homework, I have nightmares about books chasing me, saying, 'Study me. Study me. ' as 'Q-fn'i9 R, 4 , ,.' fs, ' Eiga.. M .. l KNOW lT'S HERE SOMEWHERE. jason Dixon searches diligently for a paper among the clutter on and around his desk. l'M A T.V. ADDICT. Mark Hallum likes to relax every afternoon after school by watching television. He also likes his cat whose name is Tigger. The cat enjoys Mark's lap and RIDE THE BULL. After the last bell, Randy Cook hurries home to ride his pet bull named Brownie. Randy is a versatile guy and enjoys doing anything but homework which he states, , .. gives me nightmares. l'M WAITING. Amber White waits impatiently for her aunt to come and pick her up after the last bell has rung to signal the end of another school day. attention much more than anything ' besides food. Some had definite ideas and some vague notions, but they all real- ized that the time was at hand to make some decision about what they would like to do with their lives. Several had plans to continue their education. Abby Brown and Charlie Coody hoped to attend Haskell Junior College in Lawrence, Kansas, El- len Dorrough hoped to go to the University of Texas and become a physical therapist, DeLynn Eddlemon wanted, eventually, to become an at- torney after receiving a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Oklahoma School of Law, after completing college, Maria Stanfill would like to open her own accounting firm. Others hoped to go to work soon after high school graduation. Mark Smithee planned to open a repair shop for consumer electronics in Seminole, and Richard Harris worked toward be- coming a welding technician. Whatever they chose to do, the graduates of THE YEAR OF THE COMETSH were armed with values, determination, and a good educa- tion, all of which will help them find their par- ticular place in the world. Choate, Attorney. rf X N November 22 designated the Friday of the 1986 Basketball Homecoming. Several activi- ties helped mark the day as special. Dress Up Day was sponsored by the Student Council and the winners, Jesse Marshall, Donna John- son, Karen Scott, and Shad Evans, were all given prizes. Although winners were chosen, it was a hard decision for the judges because everyone was so dressed up. The Homecoming Ceremony began at 6:15 P.M. before the girls' game against Mason which began at 7:00 P.M. Everyone included in the procession was excited as they waited impatiently for the music to start signalling the beginning of a memorable evening. The King, Kenny Hernandez, and the Queen, Maria Stanfill, were all smiles after being chosen by their fellow teammates. After the crowning came the kiss - the mo- ment which everyone is always waiting for, to the embarrassment of the King and Queen. At the end of the ceremony the floor was cleared in preparation for the beginning of the girls' game. This designated the end of the home- coming ceremonies for 1986. Senior Class o THE YE R OP THE COMETS - Our school year arrived with a big bang. Kids came to school ready to see what their friends had done over the summer vaca- tion, and seniors prepared to make their last year the best. Principal Al Burgess set a seri- ous tone the first day of school when he announced NO TO- BACCO on school grounds ef- fective November 1, 1985. House Bill 531103 passed on April 12, 1985 prohibited any use of to- bacco on school grounds, at school events, etc. Along with all the other ex- citement, two new teachers ar- rived at our fine school. Mrs. Lesa Hunter, our new math teacher, made a favorable im- pression in her maroon Cor- vette. Mr. Keith Carter, our new athletics coach, brought great credentials having just taken an American Legion baseball team to the state tournament during the summer. He brought this knowledge and interest in base- ball to our school and set to work rebuilding our baseball program. Activities filled with fun for everyone were a big part of the year's agenda. Student Council had Twirp Week, and the cheer- leaders worked hard on the bake sale and car wash to raise money for their new uniforms. Every- one joined in the fun at the state fair, and school assemblies were always fun. For the Yearbook Staff, the year was filled with a lot of hard work. We would like to thank everyone who helped us com- plete the book-especially the teachers who allowed students out of class to have pictures tak- en. All of you helped us to make a permanent record of THE YEAR OF THE COMETSN. CONCLUSIO ti.. LET ME SEE. Donna Johnson, Amy Hardin, and Maria Stanfill prepare for the cheerleaders' garage sale. OH BOY, I'M TIRED! Tommy Yancey and Chad Abney run out of energy at the State Fair. JOURNEYING INTO SPACE. Denise Har- ris and Alan Dunlap join in the fun on Punk Day. 2 .h 2- . f +- 'S' xl ' i r f ips' 1 ff'1 1 IV Q 'N iii , T .
