For your school, you have done a good jobg for yourselves, you have the satisfaction of having completed a worthwhile piece of work. This has been a most eventful year for Pleasant Grove, one that each of us can look back upon with much pride and satisfaction. My exhortation to you, my dear young friends, is that you learn early in life that we are living in an ever-changing dynamic world of things, where sound judgment followed up by the use of common sense is indispensible. Again, remember that hap- piness and satisfaction come only by helping others. To the members of the Senior Class, my wish is that each memory that you have of your school will serve to arouse in you desires always to do the noble thing that goes to make life worthwhile. Thrill number three -- Assembly morning when Bobby Collins played the bones, Llewellyn Dement the jug, and James Sutphen the harmonica. Others came but are too shy to tell with whom, or maybe they're ashamed to tell, eh Blanche? Well, this'old year rolled around mighty fast and the tittering Ufishu became hopeful sophomores with the ending of the school year of '37-v58. This year started off with a bang! It was the first year that the basketball and football teams received suits. The basketball team made its Alma Mater proud indeed by winning the County Championship in basketball. One of our now sophisticated seniors was a cheerleader. You might know him by the name of Budde Elam. Mrs. Claudia Clay, made her debut into took over the paper The Sophomore Glass and Christmas party. started many a soph the and was now Senior Class Sponsor, school this year. Bill Sloan on the typing on the shorthand team. They favored the school with three beautiful trophies. The Junior Class had a Christmas party at which they drew names. Afterwards the whole school went to the Grove Theatre. And now after three years of carrying books a- round, the once nobodys become proud somobodys. The first Senior Class Meeting was held on Sept. 26, 1940 The officers were elected as follows: Bobby Koonce, presidentg Budde Elam, vice-presidentg Marion Barrett Secretaryg and Joe Allen Bridges, Sergeant-at-arms. Beginning in October, the Seniors had a social every month. The merry month of May was the favored month because it was in this month that all the im- portant senior activities took place. Senior Day, Graduation, and Baccalaureate come in this month. The Junior-Senior Banquet took place in April. New evening dresses and suits was the topic of conver- sation for weeks before and afterwards. This was another occasion for noting the secret heart-throbs of many a lassie as well as a lad!! At last Pleasant Grove is to have a gymnasium. Construction on a new gym is scheduled to begin before the con- clusion of this school term, and should be ready for the 1941-42 basketball season This year the basketball team was forced to journey, as usual, to the Fair Park courts for their workouts, and all of the conference games were played on the opponent's courts. Despite these handicaps, the team showed a constant improvement, and at the last of the season managed to upset the favored Cedar Hill five. Some twelve men were carried on this year's squad, and six will be back to form the nucleus for next year's team. Co-captains Lemmons and Sloan, of the basket- ball squad, deserve special mention for their play on the Hardwood court, as do Swanson and Elem, who turned in good performances at their positions. This year's lettermen are as follows: Bill Sloan .. Forward Budde Elam .. Guard Bob Kbonce .. Forward B. Swanson .. Guard F. Lemmons .. Center L. Watson .. Guard Pleasant Grove's track team consisted of Crane, Conner, Brey, Rosenberg, and Witherspoon . Conner placed in the District Meet. -vt c c c c'-is-say..
