Albert Graham 3 I fw OUR VERY oWN fo 0 -'O v4g,. iv 'f School History Our production was started by the men and women who built the first one and two-teacher schools in the Pleasant Grove Township. These people may be justly proud of the part they played in our production, but in the hearts of these leaders was a dream of a large, consolidated, rural school. The second part of our production was completed in 1922 when five one and two-teacher rural schools, Mahan, Sidney, Squires, McCray, and King joined together and became one school---Pleasant Grove. At the beginning of the school year, only two rooms and a wooden auditorium were finished. Because of a misunder- standing among the patrons, the high school students in 1924 were moved to Haw River School, this change was only temporary, because the high school students were returned to Pleasant Grove in 1925. The next few years were important in our production, four more rooms were added to the building in 1928. The Parent-Teachers' Association, organ- ized in 1929, has performed many bene- ficial services for us. In 1931 Union Ridge and Hickory Grove were joined to Pleasant Grove. In 1933 the school's first lunch room was operated, and in 1934 courses in home economics and agriculture were offered. A separate building was built for the agriculture department in 1936. A library was established in the main building in 1937. The next part of our production was led by those who visualized future needs of the school and in 1942 bought three acres of land. In 1946 the lunchroom and kitchen were enlarged and modern equipment purchased. In 1953 a major step was made in our production by the erection of a new, modern building, including a gymnasium, home econo- mics department, library, and cafe- teria. In 1955, the County Board of Education made another important step in our production by purchasing ten acres of landfor a playground. In 1960 because of increased enrollment and additional teachers, it was necessary to divide the auditorium into four much- needed classrooms. We feel grateful for the educational heritage we have received, not only for the land, buildings, and equipment, but also for the knowledge acquired, the standards of character developed, and the friendships made. As we take our places in the community, we shall con- sider itiour privilege to maintain the educational advantages provided for us because of others' efforts and to in- crease and to present more and better opportunities to the next generation so that we,too, may do our part in this great production. IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU MZ Dedication In making its production, the yearbook staff proudly dedicates its Amo-ena to Mr. Ross Lee Smith. As our friend and teacher of mathematics, he has made a name for himself which is synonymous with sincerity, earnestness, and integrity. 5 For one who has meant so much to us, a page seems insufficient space in which to express our gratitude and appreciation. MOTTO-- Our faults are stepping stones to success. COLORS - Pink and White FLOWER - Pink Carnation In the last year of our production at Pleasant Grove , the Seniors found their hours filled with wonderful and stimulating ex- periences. Early in the year the Seniors elected their mascots, superlatives, grade parents, and Amo-ena Staff. Cecil Thomas, Joan Oliver, and Judy Dickey were initiated into the Monogram Club. Ten Seniors, MichaelRascoe,Alice Massey, Reid Hughes, Jimmy Stephens, Kay Jeffreys, Pam Small, Pat Faucette , Judy Dickey, Tommy Thompson , and Cecil Thomas received their sweaters representing the various sports in which they had participated. Q0 As this goes to press, the Seniors and Juniors are planning a joint trip to our Nation's Capital, Washington, D. C. The Christmas party at school, the Twirp Twirl, the fun and romance of the Junior- Senior Banquet, the ordering and mailing of invitations, and the final examinations will bring the Seniors to the end of their pro- duction-graduation, the goal of these twelve years. May their individual productions in life be a credit to their Alma Mater! t..4J l 1 P I K J V w N l 1 5 OOl1lsq . '- D -A . ' . -1- -1-1'L'k ooo cas 90-A QQ QFQQ goo oo ' O 03-Lo 0 799 O Q 7' . MOTTO: The higher we climb, the broader the view. F LOWER: Lilac COLORS: Lilac and White lnthis movie,The Production of P.G.H.S., the junior class has provided many outstand- ing characters who played their various roles. With the leadership of our officers and advisor, who are pictured above, we had a successful year. There were five students who worked diligently to help produce what they think is the best AMO-ENA ever to be printed. Throughout the year to challenge us, there were examinations, grades, scoldings, and trips to the office. To offset these, we had parties, dates, ball games and interesting and romantic conversations in the hall. April arrived and the Juniors and Seniors were Washington bound. Then in May, we honored the Seniors with a Junior -Senior Banquet at the E1k's Lodge. This memorable event, one of the highlights of our Junior year, will live in our hearts always. The Jtmiors will remember the day our class rings arrived. These rings proved to be the symbols of our achievement of three difficult but prosperous years in high school. To climax this feeling of having nearly achieved our goal, we, the Juniors, on Class Day 1961, took our places as Seniors of Pleasant Grove High School. We are no longer followers, but now the leaders! -' ,.ns '1 I Oh 1 -', 9 ,,j.1-iq... -61-g O'0'v. ,,. 1 Q -tg . . 1 ' on 5- D0 ' 'V .R ... .. o ' .. r O 9 1 -EHWEBIENIILX if: 56 1,12 ' fc3' . . .
