With this hope in mind, we, the yearbook staff of Pleasant Gardens High School, publish the i955 edition of The Pines. One of the most noteworthy achievements attempted and successfully culminated in the history of Pleasant Gardens School was the establishment in i949 of the commercial department. Through the indefatigable efforts of Principal R. l. Wiggins, who awakened generous patrons for the far-reaching possibilities, progressive planning and constructive activity were devised. By direction of Mrs. Jane Rowe, head of the department, the impetus for the greater part of the program came. She is largely responsible for the astonishing amount of ex- pansion since the modest beginnings of the initial attempts. A well-conducted smoothly running department it has become not only an integral part, but a vital role and a true highlight in the stabilizing activities of the school. Furthermore it has opened to the students doors in the business world where they are holding positions of trust and leadership with Credit to themselves, and with honor to their school. Mrs. Rowe offers stimulating guidance that is careful and thorough, an alert interest that is genuine and intense, a courageous enthusiasm that is charming and engaging. Her stride never falters, her pace never slows. In the absence of a more eloquent tribute we dedicate to Mrs. Rowe the nineteen- hundred fifty-five issue of The Pines. is . A c. 'I W -I' K. We dropped into a saloon where we lected tearfully into our orange iuice over our by-gone school days. Then and here we decided to visit that well- known prophetess, Helen Kaylor, who was said to be able to look in on anyone, anywhere. After we were seated in her 'dim little seance room, she bade us gaze into a clouded silver ball before us on the table. To our amazement, the ball began to clear and before our very eyes the figures of our old school-mates began to appear. ln the first picture, were we surprised to see Danny Padgett and his troupe of black-faced comed- ians consisting of Tommy Byrd, Wayne Brooks, and Roger Byrd, just opening up at the Mocombo, which is now owned and operated by C. N. Mease and his wife, Rose Marie Dover. The next picture flashed before us and we saw that Anna lee McKinney was happily cruising the Carribean with that great shrimp fisher, Bruce Guy, Their boat was made by long Manufacturing Company andthey say'Olm is putting Cris-Craft out of business, Then suddenly we found ourselves in the warm sun of lazy Hawaii. Tommy Hendley sat basking be- neath a coconut tree. At first we couldn't figure out what he was doing with a pair of binoculars until we saw the pretty girls down the beach. Christine Setzer, Nell Queen, Pat Davis, and Oleta McMahon were all splashing in the surf, lt seems that they have jobs down there in one of the fancy department stores. ln a flash, we were transported to the beautiful airport in Bombay. A huge Ralph Robinson Strato-liner landed and were we surprised when the door flew open and the smiling stewardess turned out to be none other than Nell Burnette. Getting off the plane was the distinguished looking oil tycoon, John D. Hawkins and his cute little wife, Marilyn Monroe. By this time our heads were swimming as we caught a glimpse of Peggy Burgin, louise Young and Carolyn Withrow modeling Dior fashions in an ex- clusive Paris shop owned by Jeanette Jimeson and Patsy McKinney. The next picture switched us to Washington where we saw reporters Rilla Ann McKinney and Venia Poteat busy hunting up stories for the Guy Godfrey Herald. And in that same city we saw Jane Queen, De- lores Lavender, and Wanda Wilson working at the FBI Building, interpreting French spies. Then we were taken to New York where we dis- covered Ina Conner and lnez Byrd writing together under the pen name of Al Cohol. Their books are published by Suttles Publishing Company owned by our own Pauline. Her chief advertiser, so we found, is Mary Noblitt. And finally, we were transported to the bullfights in gay and colorful Spain iust in time to see that mad matador, .l. C. Duncan, make the kill. And one of those screaming ladies in the balcony turned out to be the famous singing star, Kay McNeill. Sitting to her left we saw the new movie star who is rumored to be taking Audrey Hepburn's place, louise Throne- burg and her favorite leading man, Glenn Morgan. As the last of the pictures faded before our eyes, Claude and l departed for the saloon and, mellowed by our usual orange iuice, we discussed the fate of our classmates. But whatever their road in life really is, we sin- cerely hope it will be a happy one. RACHEL STRADER PROPHET CLASS HISTORY 1951 ln the fall of 1951, forty-nine pupils entered our high school, declaring war on ignorance. The war was to be divided into four maior battle, each battle to be on a different battlefield. ' The first maior battle was on the freshman battle- field, lasting from September until May. The officers elected were, President, Jr., Vice-Presi- dent, R Secretary lna Conner, Treasurer, Rose Marie Dover, and Reporter, lnez Byrd, with the help of Mrs. Wiggins, our homeroom teacher, These officers were to govern our movements duringlthe first battle. ln May, after a very beneficial year, the know-it-all freshmen were granted a truce of three months to prepare for the coming major campaign that was to take place on the Sophomore' battlefield.. 1 952 ln the fall of the year 1952, forty-five students re- turned to begin the second maior battle in the war on ignorance to take place on the Sophomore battlefield, with the following officers, President, Rag-er Byrd, Vice President, Inez Byrd, Secretary, Peggy Burgin, Treas- urer, Guy Godfrey, and Reporter, Tommy Hendley, with two new students, Olin long ci-nb Rachel Strader, to aid them along with Mrs. Hughes. ln May this battle was over. The Sophomores had gained much ground against ignorance. A secondtruce was declared in order to recuperate and prepare for the third maior battle. 1 953 Forty-one members came back in the fall of 1953 to xengage in the third all-important battle. Our officers were: President, , Jr., Vice-President, Joyce Gillespie, Secretary Peggy Burgin, Treasurer, Louise Throneburg, and Reporter, Nell Burnette. To assist these staff officers was Mrs. Rowe. Our army became very important to Pleasant Gardens High School for many of our members were inducted into various or- ganizations, such as, the Beta Club, French Club, Key Club, Bible Club, and to say nothing of the experience of salesmanship. The important social event of this campaign was the Junior-Senior Prom which was the highlight of the year. At the Lend of the third cam- paign a truce was declared so the soldiers could pre- pare for the fourth and final battle. 1954 ln the fall of 1954 we came back to the senior battlefield to begin the fourth and final maior battle on ignorance with thirty-nine members in our ranks. Our officers were, President, Pauline Suttles, Nice- President, Guy Godfrey, Secretary, louise Throneburg, Treasurer, Inez Byrd. These were aided by our ad- visor, Mrs, McGimsey, who was to guide us through this battle. As a reward for our work the past three years, we received our class rings which we thought were most handsome. l'm sure no one could forget the chicken pie suppers, play practices, the Halloween carnival, and the billfolds, vanilla, and hangers we sold to make money for our trip to Washingtoii. As we come to the end of this war with all eyes turned toward Victory-''Commencementf' We hope that every member of our ranks will attain the goal, his sheepskin, and none will fall by the waysides. To sum up this war of four years on ignorance: it has not been won by outstanding events but by patiently sticking to our guns. lt would have been impossible for us to accomplish what we have done had it not been for the untiring efforts and love of all the faculty members of Pleasant Gardens High School to whom we are indeed most grateful.
