W. A. Young was our principal. After Miss Wall and Miss Hicks had taught us a few lessons in arithmetic and ABC 'sg we advanced to the second grade, and were joined by Trilby Davis and Hazel Poteat. Here we learned more difficult problems in arithmetic, and how to read and write. Our third year marked the arrival of Donnie McKinney and Paul Brooks. In our first year of grammar school, the fourth grade, we were faced with geography, which then seemed to us a most monotonous subject. In our fifth year,we were greeted by Louise Lavender and a new principal, Mr. N. F. Shearouse, who replaced Mr. W. A. Young. We were then promoted to the sixth grade where we occupied our minds With long tedious assignments of history. Barbara Meredith and Betty Reeps were added to our enrollment during this year. In the seventh grade we gained another member, Joan Rabb. This year marked the beginning of rapid growth and much improvement for our school under the principalship of Mr . R. L. Wiggins, who came to us in this year. The last year of grammar school was spent in preparing our minds for the high school years which were just ahead. Here it was! The fall of 1948 and as we present day Seniors made our grand entrance into our place as Freshmen at Pleasant Gardens High School, we as lower-classmen were fascinated by the superiority of the Seniors. As was the custom, Initation Day marked our formal intro- duction into this institute of higher learning. Mrs. Wiggins was our home- room teacher. The fifty-four members of our class elected as officers: President, Shirley Henlineg Vice-President, Carolyn Blackwell, Secretary, Eunice Burnetteg Treasurer, Rowena Grindstaff. Tough algebra problems and our debating history Class climaxed our Sophomore Year. Miss Conley was our homeroom teacher and our offi- cers for this year were: President, Joan Rabb, Vice-President, Eunice Burnette: Secretary, Frances Silver, Treasurer, Rex Pope, Reporter, Margaret Glenn. At last we were Juniors and here we spent a hilarious time preparing for our first Junior-Senior Banquet, which required much hard work and co-operation from the entire class. Patricia Martin and Bob Morgan joined us here. We elected as our officers: President, Paul Brooks, Vice-President, Roy Dean Corner, Secretary, Frances SilvergTreasurer, Margaret Glenng Reporter, Trilby Davis. Our homeroom teacher this year was Mrs. Rowe. As the fall of '52, marked the beginning of another school year,we stepped into our places as Seniors, the long awaited for position as upper- classmen. It was at the first of this year that we fully realized that a very important chapter of our lives was being brought to a grand climax and that we were standing upon the threshold of another chapter. It is for the approaching step out into the world that we are now preparing our- selves. We have caught a glimpse of the task that lies before us in try- ing to make a place for ourselves in the world and are working toward the goal of perfecting ourselves for this task. We gained Bobby Queen this year. During the past four years we have lost many of our fellow class members but have gained some who have helped our class in many ways. At this time we Seniors are looking forward to practicing for the Se- nior Play and anticipating the many events which accompany Graduation. SCHOOL DAYS CLASS PROPHECY After graduating in May, 1953, six of us formed the McPeters All- Star Basketball Team, and, since that time, we have become world famous. The other members of our team are Trilby Davis, June Shuf- ford, Frances Silver, and, of course, our Captain, Ellen McPeters and our manager, Margaret Glenn. Several months ago, we received an invitation to play the South A- merican Champions in New York City. Within a few days we were looking down at the treetops and houses below. And who do you think our pilot was ? Bob Morgan. The very effi- cient stewardess was our old friend, Betty Jean Reel. Our first stop was La Guardia Field. As we stepped from the plane whom should we see but Eunice Burnette on her way to Europe to give a command performance for the King and Queen. She has become a famous television star. We called a taxi and can you imagine our surprise when Horace Smith came skidding toa stop before us '? He told us of another classmate Pat Martin, who is happily married to a famous lawyer, and is making quite a name for herself as a fashion model. When we arrived at our hotel, the Waldorf-Astoria, Frank Mills was diligently scrubbing the plate glass windows in front. Now, don't get the idea he's a window washer--he's the manager of the hotel, just out getting his daily exercise. While we were in NewYork,we decided to go to the Opera. The very talented soprano, Betty Patton, was singing in the role of Carmen. The next night we went to Madison Square Gardens to watch the wrest - ling matches. Gorgeous Gale Hilton was in the main event, and she displayed an amazing amount of strength in defeating her 300 pound oppo- nent. The referee was Carrol Blackwell. Thenext morning when we were through eating breakfast, we bought a copy of the New York Times and found that it was edited by Roby Gibbs. Dominating the front page was a picture of the newly crowned Miss America, Betty Lou Reeps. She had just signed a contract with MGM. Our team decided to take in a movie at the Plaza. We were sur- prised to find that Bobby Queen was the owner of this large theatre. Af- ter talking to him, we went into the movie and there was Carolyn Black- well playing in alove scene opposite Gene Davis, the new Hollywood Sen- sation. During an especially exciting scene, a lady sitting directly in front of us fainted, and we called the theatre's private nurse. When she spoke we immediatly recognized her voice as being that of Betty Jean Holli- field. In no time at all the lady was revived by Betty Jean. After winning our game in New York, we received a telegram from the French All-Stars, inviting us to play them in Paris. As we were boarding abeautiful passenger ship, The Queen Mary, Paul Brooks, the All-American Baseball Player, who was just returning from a tour of the world, was getting off the ship. After several days on the ocean, we arrived at an English port. Since we were to be in Europe for a few weeks before our scheduled game, we visited some of the historic spots. While on a tour through Oxford University, we saw Mary Helen Ballew who was continuing there her study of English Literature. The University of Paris was our next stop. There was Barbara Me- redith still studying the French Language. She is going to teach foreign language at Wellesley. We won our game with the French All-Stars, then we came back to the U.S.A. On our way to our home state,we passed through Nashville, Tennes- see. We found that Weyma Woody had taken Minnie Pearl's place on the Grand Old Opera. Upon our arrival in North Carolina, we discovered that Roy Dean Comer had made quite a name for himself in the State Hospital for the Insane. Oh, don't get us wrong, he's a psychiatrist. His very capable secretary is Donnie McKinney. When we got to Pleasant Gardens,we decided to visit our Alma Ma- ter. A new elementary school building had been built and Hazel Poteat was the Principal. The first great change she made was a complete de- struction of all rules and regulations. After comparing our class with all the others, we find that we are the most outstanding class ever to graduate from Pleasant Gardens. Each member has made his mark in the world, be it good or bad. I, Betty Jean Reel, leave my ability to pop and sell popcorn to Norma Jean Ellis. We, Betty Lou Reeps, Barbara Meredith, and Betty Jean I-Iollifield leave our lasting and devoted friend- ship to anyone who is able to get along as we have. I, June Shufford, leave my love for Green Fords to absolutely no one. I, Frances Silvers, leave my babyish ways to Flos- sie McKinnis, I, Horace Smith, leave my boring school days to Bill Bell. I, Barbara Wiseman, leave my cute but naughty ways to Goofy McHone. I, Weyma Woody, leave my pleasing voice to Anna Lee McKinney. T fi 41 OFFIC ERS President ............ Billy Bell Vice-President.
