Our marquee could easly read . . . LF-YQ-LLWWANT IT, GQI lfl' ATMPQAZ-Q! Plaza is filled with many personalities and with many things to do. Students can be seen talking, laughing, and sitting together in the Commons area. in the Kivas, classes come together to rehearse plays or watch other presentationsjlfo help illustrate other lessons, we gather together in .the Planef tarium to watch the sky come alive. And, for a variation, our Television Studio can supply us with programs, news, and music. Our day begins with a moment of silence to help us collect our thoughts. From that point we plunge into a day which allows us few moments to spare. Our curriculum includes fundamentals such as English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Physi- cal Education as well as elected subjects including Art, Home Economics, industrial Arts, Band, Chorus, General Business, Languages, and Public Speaking. The decisions are great: the choices far outnumber the amount of time that one can spend during our school hours. During the day, students can discuss common concerns and plan activities through our Student Cooperative Association. This active body demonstrates open communication between all stu- dents and faculty. Our pride is strengthened when we see so many visitors touring through classes to better understand why Plaza is so very special. But when the coursework has ended, few students go home. There are too many activities to interest each of our classmates. We can now choose to be members of Plaza organizations. We replace our books with skateboards, pom-poms, batons, musical instruments, cans of food for charity drives, and pencils, rulers and calculators for yearbook work. We can also put on uniforms and spiked shoes since each season welcomes new sports and athletic records. And when we still want to see each other, we can step onto the dance floor and watch Plaza become a favored disco spot. We look around and realize that school is overwhelming and we want to share our experiences with the people who mean so much to us. There is no doubt that Plaza is very special. So . . . lf you want it. . . We've got it at Plaza... Follow us.. . gg., ir 1 .GS , . Understanding of this uniqueness should be promoted by students themselves, by teachers, and by admini- - Af, strators. ' Plaza Junior High shares vvith the home, the church, other edu- cational institutions, and the community at large, the responsibility for stimulating the student to achieve excellence in human relation- ships and intellectual, cultural, and civic responsibility for the moral and physical vvell-being of our students. Educators are charged vvith providing humane and supportive leadership for the entire school commuinty. We are responsible for improving the quality of educational services to youth, and furnish- ing professional leadership to the community, as vvell as providing an atmosphere vvhere people become self directive and exercise origi- nality and initiative. 4 ,fan-I Dr. E. E. Brickell Superintendent of Schools R,AA1ivx-Lv.. x+Piffx- Our Administrators are extremely in- volved in personalizing education. Each man provides numerous opportunities to meet with students and to discuss their problems and needs. They serve also as our Ambassa- dors at all school and community functions. Helping students to realize their fullest potential academically and socially are their primary goals. They bring to their work a wide range of experiences. lVlr. Keen and lVlr. Roberson each have a Mathematics and Science back- ground with advanced studies in Admini- stration and Supervision. Dr. Troutman im- pacts upon his knowledge of the Social Sci- ences and Curriculum Planning. Our Prin- cipal, lVlr. Gilliam, also shares his under- standing of previous studies in Economics vvhich have been furthered through his de- grees in Educational Administration. In addition to formulating and super- vising school policies, our Administrators are fine athletes. Their presence is vvitnessed on the basketball court as they share in the triumph at a Faculty-Student game as well as on the tennis Court. Seated together at ath- letic events, Dr. Troutman remains an out- spoken spectator. Certainly these individuals serve as admirable models for both the teachers and the student body. ODYSSEY STAFF m,,,..,,-f um-lr In September, our Yearbook staff gathered together to plan the strategy to make this book a memorable one. For the next ten months we met to carry out our plans. We worked with photographers, made many phone calls, sorted through pictures, and drew numerous sketches. By creating contests and surveys, we found new ways to involve much of our student body. We actively supported dances, games, and other club functions so that we could best represent Plaza life. After alphabetizing countless numbers of teachers' and students' pictures, we felt we knew each Plaza member somewhat personally. After a long day at school, we would groan when we came together to do the required ng for this book. When we were tired, we would ask other if this was a secret plot by our teachers to our spelling, grammatical, and mathematical skills. But we remember the times well - Editor Paula had to to, pleaded tol cover male althetics. . . artist did she draw the feet in this yearbook freehand or did she just trace her own shoes?... ever-loyal Sue mith - she came to the meeting the day after the KISS concert but fell alseep . .. But throughout, we laughed a lot - we also panicked - and then we laughed again. We knew that all staff members contributed what they could do best - selling yearbooks, keeping records, drawing layouts, writing paragraphs, and organizing and taking pictures. And, we are all justifiably proud of our finished product - the 1977 ODYSSEY. We requested that a professional photographer come to school to capture through his camera a day at Plaza. These shots were to reflect the true spirit of Plaza Junior High. He spent an entire afternoon here e traveling through the halls, entering classes, hiding behind walls, even to the point of climbing to the top of a building to record the saga of Plaza. We anxiously awaited the return of these shots. Daily, we eagerly checked the incoming mail. You can imagine our excitement when the package arrived! We tore open the package, rushing for the first glimpse. Aaaaaaaaay, Fonz says, Whoa! Our shock was com- plete! Could this be the Plaza we know? We asked our photographer for proof. It was then that we produced a team that posted a 9-3 record and finished second in the League. Losing the City cham- pionship in extra innings by a score of 1-0 was the biggest setback to a very successful season. This year's team is seen with much optimism. I feel that we are the 'team to beat' in the city. Joey Nlillis, Jack Graff, Brian Dees, and Jimmy Funaro are the returning lettermen. A quick pre-season look at the team would show Plaza with experience, a young and hard-throwing pitching staff, much more depth than last year, more speed, suffi- cient hitting, and very aggressive action. With such a com bination, I feel Plaza has an excellent opportunity to have a very successful season. - Coach Brumfield Rvqvlm G X-la Off SOFTBALL , 4-' -f B ' .- J ' . Many members of the Class of 1980 have been together at Plaza for three years. They have left their mark in many ways due to their activities, interests, and concerns. The .
