1 at 63,11 Art Develops Sensitivity To Environment The art classes teach the individual student to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials. The purpose of art classes is to help students acquire a basic knowledge of the ele- ments and principles of design and to apply this knowledge in independent work. The art classes teach the students to be observant and to appre- ciate the things around them and to acquire ideas of color and taste that will be used later in life. Wistfl l' 9 J wo ii Li tg The physical education team seeks to aid the student in the development and maintenance of physical fitness and involve him in experiences that emphasize the learning of skills used in games, sports, and dances. The curriculum includes the team experiences in basketball, volleyball, speedball, soccer, field hockey, and softball. The individual activities include gymnastics, werestling, free exercise, weight training, and tennis. An intramural and extramural pro- gram is conducted at the end of each instructional period and a tournament determines the school champion. The Virginia Beach Recreation Department then sponsors a city championship tournament to which each school sends its champion.
