Students working on the TV crew learn all about the production of a program. English students have used this facility to see themselves perform and to evaluate their performance. It is limited only by the imagination of those who employ the planetarium as a teaching device. It is used to explain more thoroughly concepts that cannot be adequately explained in the classroom. This facility not only serves as a science supplement for students but adults and others in the community are able to witness pro- grams and demonstrations which are free and open to the public. The primary objective ofthe planetarium will be to make programs educa- tionally stimulating and informative. The hostesses aid with public programs by seating the guests. passing out handbills. and explaining the instruments. The Trojan Concert Band is a dedicated and polished performing group. At the Virginia Beach Music Festival in March they received three superior ratings from the judges. They also placed the greatest number of students in the All-City Band and had the most first chair playing positions. S The band provides music for the pep rallies, school assemblies, football games, and the annu- al Spring and Christmas concerts. Speed's The Thing The Trojans entered their first track team into competition in 1970. The first year team was a building team but the Trojans did end the season holding three City Records. Joe Shray won the City Record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 10.7 seconds. He also established the City Record for the 220-yard dash with a speedy 23.3 seconds. The 440-yard relay team sprinted around the track in a flying 47.7 to capture the City Record in that event. Joe Shray, Richard O'Brien, John Bradley, and Mike Kennemer were on that record-setting team. As the 1971 Odyssey went to press the Trojan sprinters were once again warming up the track with returning veterans forming the backbone ofthe team. 1970 Plaza 72 Kempsville JHS Plaza 41 Bayside JHS Plaza 51 Virginia Beach JHS Plaza 58 Princess Anne City Meet Virginia Beach JHS 56 Bayside JHS 46 Princess Anne 45' 2 Plaza JHS -11 Kempsville JHS 1812 1970 TRACK TEAM: Row l: J. Our Parents Are Behind Us All The Wa Plaza Junior High School has been most for- tunate in having a trio of active parent groups to support activities within the school, sponsor events of interest to the students, raise money to contribute to school needs, and provide the needed communication between the school and community. The Parent-Teacher-Student Association is an organization which promotes communication and understanding between the three groups. The programs are designed to show what is happening within the school. At the beginning of each year there is a general open house so students may bring their parents to meet the teachers and see the school. The Band Association was formed to arouse and maintain interest in the instrumental department and to support band activities. of the energy of the group has been focused earning money to buy band uniforms. The Booster Club has supported many activities within the school and has various money-earning projects so they contribute trophies and letters to the Plaza letic teams and buy needed athletic To do this, they have managed booths at the home football games, school dances and sold refreshments, held a ghetti supper and raffle, and sold tobaggon in school colors. Suddenly the memories of busy days and exciting events begin to flood our minds: our athletic teams fighting their way to thrilling victories or sometimes falling to dismal defeatg our band rehearsing every moment possible and then going forth to bring home honor after honorg our dances and partiesg and most ofall our friends. We'll never quite forget the experience it was to have 87 minutes of classg or the confusion of whether we were in A week or B week. But most of all we'll remember all of those precious three minute breaks we tried to stretch into ten minutes. As the ninth graders depart. new faces will come again to adorn the Kivas, language labs, and hallways of Plaza Junior High. These students coming in will add their stamp of personality as did those who passed before. We hope that because of this each student will remember the opening line of our Alma Materg Plaza we love you. there is no other . These words should stay in your heans as you leave Plaza, for in these eight words are the feelings that each of us hold dear.
