A new program that was introduced to the Plattsmouth High curriculum this year was Vocation- al Education. This government-sponsored project was designed to offer non-college bound students an opportunity to gain vocational training before graduating from high school. It is also open to college bound students who wish to obtain proficiency in a certain skill. With the addition of the new program, a small prob- lem arose: where to house the program. It was decided to build a new building down on the football field. The building, blue of course, contains Automo- tive Repair, Vocational Metals, Carpentry, Occupa- tional Skills, and Vocational Garment Making. Can numbers be that tunny, Mr. Witt? It also provided music for the drill team’s half time performanees. 81 Band Marches to National Fame Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the target for the PI1S inarching hand this year. The Marching Devils flew to the City of Brotherly Love to participate in the North American Marching Band Con- test, where they placed fifth. The hand also earned superiors at the Plattsmouth Invitational Marching Contest and the Nebraska State Marching Contest. At “Pershing,” they extended their string of superiors to nine, break- ing the record for all classes. A surprise birthday party for Direc- tor Jack Herweg following the latter contest was the perfect way to put an end to the 7:30 a.m. rehearsals and two hour noon-time practices. Closer to home, the band performed in numerous county fairs, city celebrations, and various parades. Every Wednesday night the staff met to work diligently to compile a record of the year's activities. Rut the 1972-197.'} Plutonian would not have come into being without the long hours of work by photographer Tony Ballain. 84 While Platter Staff “Presses” On The Platter Staff, sponsored by Mrs. Mary Caverzagie. with the help of the two editors, Mary Anne Lebens and Katin Katon, put out the hi-montlih edition of the school newspaper, the Platter. The paper was written by Senior reporters during most of the year: but near the end. the Juniors tried their hand with the stories and printed the last four editions. 85 Harriers Take Second at State Running approximately three hundred miles paid off as the Cross Country team finished an almost perfect season, ranking first in seven of nine meets and second at the State Meet. The District Meet proved to be the high point of the season. A large crowd of Devil fans gathered at the Plattsmouth Country Club to watch the home- town harriers sweep the meet, clocking the five fastest times and capturing the first place trophy. Festivities began in the afternoon with the second annual Homecoming Parade. The first, second, and third place awards were given this year respectively to Math Club, Drill Team, and Senior Class. After the game against Auburn, Pep Club sponsored the annual dance. Later that evening the court was presented: Rick Kaffenberger, Rod Topliff, Jim Carmichael, Brad Puls, Dan Gradoville, Mary Anne Lebens, Sherry Finch, Loraine Jensen, Donna Martin, and Susan Ofe acted as attendants while Marty Macrander and Ginny Molinaro crowned King David Rhylander and Queen Karen Thiede. Amy Haith and Joey Holoubek brought forth the crowns. Pep Club Boosts Spirit One of the most active organizations of the year was tin Pep Club. Not only did they sponsor the traditional home- coming festivities, which included a week of special events, parade, and dance, hut also held a Parents' Night lor the football players’ parents which they hope will become an annual event. All the parents who attended seemed to enjoy and appreciate the pre-game reception and half time intro- duction. Each parent walked onto the field wearing a num- ber corresponding to his son's. President Kirk Meisinger opened the afternoon convocation by stressing the four cardinal virtues of the organization, Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Four speakers then lit representative candles and explained them further. The suspense mounted as each old member wandered through the audience to tap the new members. Pictured above, the new members are: seated, Susan Ofe, Cindy Rogers, Kathy Solomon, Debbi Keil, Janet Schleicher, Ann Siewert, Chris Wycoff, Kim Heffelfinger, Marnee Troop, Kathy Eaton; standing, Patti Glaze, Marla Tincher, Dan Holoubek, Tom McSnahe, Steve Bonberg, Henry Spangler, Diane Evers, Stella Sharp, and Susie Dietrich. Under the leadership of Coach Rich McGill and Assistant Coach Chuck Gorman, the team compiled a 15-7 won-loss record. The season ended with a disappointing loss to Lincoln Pius at the District Tournament finals. Dan Gradoville gained a position on the state's Class B 2nd Team from the “Lincoln Star” and honorable mention rank from the “Omaha World—Herald.” Gradoville and Dave Rhylander were named to the Twin Rivers All-Conference Team, and Joe Peitzmeier was awarded honorable mention status. This was held May 15 for the public’s eye. The Stage Band gave their annual concert on May 8 after many early- in-the-morning practices. They also performed with the Concert Band during the Winter Concert. Vocalizing at P. H. S. 100 The Chorus and Glee were quite active during the year with a winter and spring concert and their annual play production with ‘‘Fiddler On The Roof” which was a great success. District Music Concert at Auburn was one of the highlights with many small groups partici- pating. The Madrigal also was active with a winter, spring, and Christmas concert. Some of the songs featured by the Madrigal were “Sounds of Silence,” “Shaft,” and “The Way of Love.” Top left: Girls (dec Bottom left: Madrigal Above: Chorus Karen wonders if Jenna is as wicked on the chess board as she is on the key board. 101 Foreign Accents Come to PHS 102 Above: Math Club: Pres., Geoff Henning; V. Stade, West Germany, is the hometown of Heidrun Marquardt, YFU ex- change student during the 1972-73 school year at PUS. Heidrun comes to us from a family of four: her parents, William and Magdalene Marquardt; and her 13-year-old brother, Frank. Her father is a government official. Her American family is the Roy Siewerts. At home, 16-year-old Heidrun attended Vincent—Lubeck Schule, where classes are held six days a week. Comparing it to PHS, she said she feels “more relaxed” with the teachers here and that our studies are easier. In Germany, students do not choose their own classes, nor are there extra- curricular activities. Heidrun is a rpember of the PHS French Club. Heidrun apparently enjoyed her year in Plattsmouth. “I’d like to come back someday,” she said. 103 Math Club Solves Problems I In Plattsmouth 11i rli School chorus presented “Fiddler on the Hoof as its musical production this year. Under the watchful eve of director, Ron Nelson, the play progressed from a loose, relaxed at- mosphere, to the nervous, tense atmosphere of opening night. Never- theless, with the help of Jenna Murphy, accompanist, and the coop- eration ( I the entire cast, fiddler on the Kool was termed a great success and was quoted as being “the best show ever.” 105 It took a great deal of time and effort for the Chorus members but on March 13 and 15, there was standing room only in the auditorium. Many leading roles this year were cast in the play but the main characters were Tevye, Tom Brown; Golde, Candy Axt; Yente, Kathy Solomon; Tzeitel, Loraine Hotel, Susie Dietrich; Chava, Diana Evers; Motel, Mark Butler: Perchick, Bob Fry; Fyedka, Don Rhoaden, Fruma Sarah, Sharon Tschirren; Grandma Tzeitel, Ellen Sack; and Rabbi, Carl Morris. 106 107 Our District Champ and third place State Wrestler. Top left: Coach Goings; Strategy. Bottom left: Mike’s willpower 109 Clubs Prepare Students for Future The year saw many joining three class-connected clubs; F.H.A., Library Club, and F.B.L.A. They were involved in many projects that included; F.H.A. (top of left page) having their first Mother and Daughter Banquet for the installation of the officers who were: Pres., Shelia Brittain; V. Pres.: Deann Phillips; Sec., Patti Young; and Tres., Judy Gradoville. Another F.H.A. project was the Grandparents program with some of the residents at the Plattsmouth Manor. Library Club (bottom left) profited from the sale of book covers and baked goods. The officers were: Pres., Judy Jenkins; V. Pres., Susie Estelle; Sec., Shelly Scott; Tres., Laura March. The F.B.L.A. (above) sold Christmas novelties and attended several conventions. The F.B.L.A. officers were: Pres., Robbie Snodgrass; V. Pres., Linda Meisinger; Sec., Tonda Lutes; Tres., Vickie Peterson; and Hist., Kathy Swabby. Ill Drama Club ‘Hams’ It Up As Student Council Acts On School’s Problems The Student Council was one of the most active organiza- tions at PHS this year. Under the leadership of President, John Loper; Vice Pres., Kirk Meisinger; Sec., Evie Vinduska; Tres., Ellen Sack, and the guidance of Mr. Kaufman, the group accepted student suggestions and put many of them into effect. The main project this year was the addition of a new trophy case to the wall of the new building. They accomplished this with the help of various organizations who contributed funds to help pay for the trophy case. Some of their other activities included the Student Board which was made available to students to give their suggestions, the March of Dimes Sweetheart Dance which was sponsored by the Student Council and the reading of announcements during the home room period. 113 TRACK OMPETITOR The track season finished with a leap and a bound. The Devils had a great season winning almost every meet they participated in. Most major meets were won by a landslide including District. The team improved more as the year progressed so that by the end of the season, the individuals were working together to make a winning track squad. 115 There were many outstanding track men this season. But the highest honor for a man out for track is the outstanding track man of the year. This person is chosen by the total number of points that he has obtained throughout the en- tire season. This year there was a tight race but it finally came out that Scott McKnight was the man. Many other men qualified for the State track meet and because of team cooperation the 1973 track season will be remembered as a winning one. Hang on sloopy! 116 New Program of Girls’ Athletics Introduced to PHS A new addition to the sports program this year was girls’ athletics. Golf and haskrthall were added to the track program which many girls were already involved in. Miss Wondra coached the track and basketball learns and Mr. Sell inner coached the golf team. As can he expected with any new program, the season records weren't all wins. But a record doesn’t show the amount of effort put forth. Many girls were new' to sports hut with this year’s experience behind them, they will prove the new girls athletic program is well worth it. 118 Junior-Senior Banquet The Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the auditorium on May 5, 1973. The meal was served by the Prom servers and entertainment during dinner was provided by Pam and Jim Butler. Following dinner the presidents ol both the Junior and Senior classes said a few words after which the entertainment began. A swing choir composed of juniors and seniors sang several selections followed by skits put on by the Prom servers. The hit of the night was the “Doo Wah Ditties” a group com- posed of local talent. The evening was immensely enjoyed by all and will be remembered for many years. 120 Is Big Success 121 The Junior Class 122 The long awaited night had finally come. After the ban- quet the auditorium was cleared by the Prom servers and made ready for the dance. The theme “L’ Amour Toujours, chosen by the juniors was beautifully depicted on all four walls and the ceiling. The floor was decorated as a town square with several street signs and sidewalk cafes. The stage was decorated with the Eiffel Tower being the main attraction. The crowning of the royalty was the major event of the evening. As everyone waited tensely, the names were finally read. The junior attendants were Sheree Newsom, Dan Holoubek, Diana Reinke and Mike Otterstein. The seniors were Teresa Holman and Bill Hobbs. Queen Loraine Jensen and King Dan Gradoville were then crowned by last year’s royalty, Dennis Cunningham and Linda Holman. -o rt C ) b 3 ft C t-1 3 o p -t Athletic Banquet Honors Coaches and Athletes The Athletic Banquet was held May 7, 1973 in the High School Auditorium. At this time all the athletes and coaches who have contributed time and hard work to various sports can be recognized. The speaker this year was Conde Sargent, sports writer from the Omaha World- Herald. Following his speech the awards were given to those who participated in the hoys and girls athletic program. Many special awards were also given. 124 Letterman’s Club Letterman’s Club kept busy this past year amid the conflicts of other activities. Besides their usual annual activities, they sponsored money making projects, a float in the home- coming parade, and a booth at the Penny Carnival. 125 Honors Convocation Honors Convocation was held on May 15. Awards were presented for outstanding achievement by students during the school year. Some of the awards presented were: FBLA, Honor Society, Math, Athletics, Annual Staff, Drill Team, Vocal and Instrumental Music, and Pep Club. After the honors were awarded, John Loper, president of the Student Council, said a few words to the seniors and then dismissed them He then spoke to the underclassmen, after which they moved up one level to the class they will he in next year. The moment approaches quick- ly; the moment of graduation. But it will pass just as quickly as it has come. The happy-sad memories of tense anticipation will linger. The all-important question, “Is my cap on straight?” echoes through the halls of PHS as another class of seniors prepares for graduation. For the seniors of the class of 1973, May 22, 1973 symbolized the end of their high school career. The Graduation Exercises which were held on the Athletic Field, honored 130 graduates, the largest class ever. Since this class was the 100th class to graduate, the class wore gold medallions commemorating the occasion. The class of 1973 has 21 members who wore gold cords signifying they were students who had a 3.50 grade average or abovt and were thus Honor Graduates. They were: Candy Axt, Kalhv Eaton, Patti Glaze, Nate Griffith, Geoff Henning, Dave Hula Denice Johnson, Kris Krings, Mary Anne Lebens, Karen Maher, Doug Mayle, Debbie Meisinger, Kirk Meisinger, Linda Meisinger, Jenna Murphy, Dale Parkening, Cindy Rogers, Ellen Sack, Ann Siewert, Kathy Soloman and Evie Vinduska. Seven seniors each gave a short talk following the theme of “One Hundred Years of Service—Yet Challenges Remain.” The seven were: Dan Gradoville, Mary Anne Lebens, John Loper, Kirk Meisinger, Dave Rhylander, Ellen Sack and Evie Vinduska.
