p I a t t 0 n 1 a n 72 Plattsmouth High School Plattsmouth, Nebraska NOW IS THE TIMK .. . 1972 Time is always around us; wherever we go, whatever we do, time surrounds us. We cannot see time, nor can we touch but we know it is there. We are bom into time, we live in time, and we will die in time. Time may be defined as a period characterized by a prevailing condition. School is filled with many different times: 2 a time to study a time to sleep a lime to cry a time to laugh 3 a time to think a time to change a time to challenge a time to be shy a time to wonder 4 a time for fun a time for friends a time to just be me Now is tiie time to turn back the pages of time and remember all the happy and sad experiences we had at Plattsmouth High School in the year of 1972. 5 Dedication This year’s 1972 Plattonian is dedicated to Mr. Jack Ilerweg, a man who came to I’HS in 1963 and began to create musical history. Mr. Ilerweg was born November 5 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. His occupational desire as a child was to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a railroad engineer. After graduating from high school he attended Parsons College in Iowa. While in college he worked with the railroad not as an engineer, hut as a cook in the dining car. Mr. Ilerweg’s family includes his wife, Pat; his son, Mark; and a daughter, Lisa. An example of his devotion to PHS is shown by the many early hand rehearsals he holds. Surprisingly enough he has held other unscheduled rehearsals in his sleep. Through the years he has led his hand to Winnipeg (Canada), Chicago, and the ASBDA Convention in Omaha, with occasional radio and television performances, and the cutting of a record. His two most outstanding accomplishments are his eight consecutive Superiors at Pershing, and most recently the Rose Bowl Parade at Pasadena, California. It is for this that the Plattonian Staff of 1972 proudly dedicates this annual to our favorite hand director, Mr. Jack Ilerweg. Administration School Board: Mr. AJ Hansen, Mr. Vcm Waterman, Mr. Howard Lindquist, Mr. Ralph Parkening, Mr. Dale Draper, Mr. Russell Nielsen, Mrs. Sandra Stoehr, Mr. Stanley Lepert. Mr. Kaufman was bom and raised in Bladen, Nebraska. He received his B.S. from the University of Nebraska, his M.S. from Kearney State College, and a six-year administrative certificate from the University of Nebraska. Before coming to Plattsmouth, Mr. Kaufman was principal for four years in the Burwell, Nebraska school system. His hobbies include hunting, reading, and collecting antiques. 9 Mr. Dale Chesley: Junior High Principal Mr. Joe Anderson: Modem Problems Mrs. Adeline Axt: Aide Mrs. Amelia Beck: English Mrs. Mickey Anson: Vocational Home Ec. The purpose of this program was to give students the opportunity to lake courses not offered on the regular schedule. Both the students and the teachers gained many new experiences. Among many of the popular courses were girls’ auto repair, card games, bachelor cooking, photog- raphy, macrame, slymnastics, volley ball, and knitting. If the Mini-Courses proved suc- cessful, you can probably expect to see them again next year. Pres., Jim Spangler; Treas., Gene Steppat; Sec., Kris Pams; (not pictured) V. After leaving the U.S., Lanny plans to return to Indonesia and become a secretary loan American businessman. Lannv wishes to return to Plattsmouth in 1974, and live here for a while. 34 Everything Came Up Roses This year the P.1I.S. band traveled one of its greatest distances. They traveled over 4000 miles to the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif. The band parents put forth a lot of effort in money-making projects. To make money lor the trip the hand parents had a rummage sale, a drawing for two color televisions, and had the bandstand. Sur- rounding communities and local organiza- tions and businessmen also made many donations, including a pancake feed and a watermelon feed. rile hand members and sponsors trav- eled to California by United Airlines and stayed in a Holiday Inn in Anaheim. While in California, they toured Lion Country Safari, Marineland, Knotts Berry Farm, and Disney- land. While at Disneyland, the band marched in a parade through Disneyland. They also saw how the floats were made for the Rose Parade. One day the band participated in the “NBC Bandtime” sponsored byMcDonald’s which was seen on television on New Year's Day. On January first the band marched in the seven mile parade and later went to watch the Nebraska and Alabama football game on TV. With many memories behind them the tired members and sponsors returned home. Also during the past year the band received superior ratings at Pershing and at the Plattsmouth contest. The band members are thankful to Mr. Herweg, the band parents, and the entire community for the hard work they put forth to send our band to represent Cornhusker Land. 36 Brass Sextet Bass Trio Brass Quartet Trumpet Trio 38 Pep Hand Stage Hand Ru back’s 39 Come on, Pat, stand up and take it like a man! Royalty candidates were: Gene Steppat, Tom Sharp, Mike Ford, Marty Maerander, Steve Aschen- brenner, Bill Kephart, Sheryl Cotting- ham, Sheri Hopkins, Kathy Baumgart, Barb Grove, Ginny Molinaro, and Debbie Snodgrass. Homecoming 71 was highlighted by the crowning of Queen Ginny and King Marty. They proudly reigned over the kingdon, the successful result of much hard work and effort put forth by the Pep Club. Devil Heaven 99 The vocal music department demonstrated its talent again this year by presenting “Bells Are Ringing.” The play concerns Ella (Fran Kildare), who works at Susanswer- phone, and Jeffery Moss (Mike Ford), an aspiring young playwright. Although Ella is cautioned by Sue (Candy Axt), the owner of the answering service, against getting involved with the subscribers, she meddles in the affairs of Blake Barton (Nate Griffith), a young actor, l)r. Kitchell (Pat Ford), a dentist who writes songs on the airhose, and Jeff, whom she falls in love with. Meanwhile, Sue has let Sandor (Tim Dunlap) use Susanswerphone for record orders, but the orders are coded messages for betting on horses. Throughout the entire play, Ella is followed by a con- fused detective, Inspector Barnes (Geoff Henning) and his assistant, Francis (Tom Sharp). The results were very humorous and enjoyed by audiences both nights. Thanks to Mr. Nelson and the chorus for an entertaining performance. Penny Carnival This year’s Penny Carnival was one of the most successful ever, featur- ing Dr. San Guinarv. Despite the rainv weather, many children and adults as well came to test their skills at the various booths. One of the popular at- tractions was the Spook House spon- sored by the Annual and Platter Staffs. Other interesting booths were the Drafting Class’s Dunking Stool, Drama Club’s Old-Time Flics, and Homemade Ice Cream made by the Spanish Club. Afterwards, music was provided for the Penny Carnival Dance by the “Royal Assembly.” The evening ended with the coronation of Queen Barb Grove and King Gene Steppat. Attend- ants were Ladera Schrynemakers, Cathy Dietz, Diane Engle, Barb Campbell, Kathy Baumgart, Jean Herfordt, Bill Kephart, Don Reichart, Mike Ford. John Painter, Dean Clark, and Jim Spangler. Everyone hopes that next year’s Penny Carnival will be as entertaining. Moonlight and Roses May 6 was all Moonlight and Roses. As usual the juniors made prom something special for all. Cross Country I his year’s Cross Country team achieved great success even though three of the four varsity contributors were running their first season. Workouts consisted of distance runs averaging six miles a day which totaled 250 at the end of the season. Two week prior to districts, practices were in the mornings and afternoons, totaling nine or ten miles daily. In varsity competition, the Cross Country squad placed first at the Applejack Invitational, Twin Rivers Tournament (second time in a row), Districts, and two home duals with Nebraska City and Syracuse. Two of three second place titles came from the hands of a fine Syracuse squad. The only other second place finish was a proud Class B State Runner-Up al a muddy Spring Lake Park course in Omaha. With these varsity finishes and an undefeated reserve squad, next season should be just as victorious. Mark Dean The Cross Country boys cam a well-deserved rest. After losing their first five games, the Devils won the hard fought Homecoming game over Kails City 28-22. The Devils took the lead, lost it, tied, trailed, tied, and then finally pulled ahead to win. Highlights of the game included quarterback Mark Butler hitting ninning back Gene Steppat with 58 and 80 yard TD strikes and also finding Bill Kephart with a 13-yardcr. Quarterback Keith Hcedum ran for one TD and also hit end Brad Puls for two vital two-point conversions along the way. Dan Gradoville also provided plenty of excitement by intercepting four Tiger aerials, a school record for one game. Haccke Finally, after many years of hard work by many people, Plattsmouth High School opened a beautiful 8-lane all-weather asphalt track this spring. The new track, one of the finest in the state, provided added incentive for the track squad as they battled to fill vacancies left by graduation. With only four seniors on this vear’s squad, rebuilding became the theme. Many fine performances highlighted the season, including two new school records. Raul Aganon broke the school record three times in the triple jump and climaxed an excellent year with a record jump of 42’l 1)4” at the state track meet where he] finished sixth. Nick Halmes lowered the school record in the two-mile run to 10:11.1. Even though the accent was on youth this year, Plattsmouth missed winning their district meet by a scant half point and in the process qualified in 9 events for the state track meet. In the stiff competition at the state meet, Rick Kaffenberger, a junior, placed third in the discus for the Blue Devils’ three points. Other performers at the state meet were Nick Halmes and Mark Aschenbrcnner in the two-mile run, Mike Haecke in the mile run, Dan Holoubek in the discus, and Tim Keil, Kirk Meisinger, Rob Schroeder, and Scott McKnight in the two-mile relay.
