This year the band strengthened their reputation by winning their 5th consecutive Supe- rior at Pershing, tying the record. The addition of six pompom girls to the ranks gave the band an extra attraction. Band trips have always been fun, but this year, thanks to the energetic boost of the Band Parents, a weekend trip to Chicago gave the band members memories to keep. They were selected to march in the Christmas Parade in Chicago over the Thanksgiving vacation. Without a doubt the PHS Band has brought pride to the Plattsmouth community. Unlike most organizations, this one is restricted to athletes only. It was founded in 1958 and in the last few years has grown to 1,000 high school “Huddles” and over 500 college “Fellowships.” At the University of Nebraska, Joe Orduna and Randy Reeves are Captain and Co-Captain of their fellowship. The list of top name College and Pro Athletes on the membership is long. The purpose is “To confront athletes and coaches, and through them, the youth of our nation with the challenge and adventure of following Christ, participation in Ilis Church and serving Him through our vocations.” This summer the FCA will hold national conferences for athletes and coaches. Twelve such conferences are being offered this year. Six boys from Plattsmouth have expressed a desire to attend a national conference in Estes Park, Colorado. After rclinguishing a T.D. on the first play, the Devils’ defense stiffened and allowed the Rams just two more T.D.’s. Jerry Wallace punched across single touchdowns in the middle periods, but a Devils’ rally fell short by a 22-12 count. The following week Crete journeyed to town. The Cards slashed for two quick scores and held on as the Devils showed lack of offensive punch again. Wallace scored his third T.D. of the season in the second quarter, but Plattsmouth dropped a tough 12-6 decision. Against Omaha Brvan the Devils took early leads of 6-0 and 13-6 but fell to a second and third quarter avalanche as the Bears pounded a tough Devil defense for five T.D.’s leading to a 33-13 verdict. In a driving rain the following week Plattsmouth traveled to Auburn. Again the Devils scored lirst before falling to a fourth quarter rally by the Bulldogs, hut showed great improvement over previous weeks. The final count was a soggy ld-6. The Devils were pounded early and often by the tough Falls City Tigers who ran up a 25-0 half-time lead. The Devils plavcd an even second half, but dropped their Homecoming tilt by a 31-6 margin. W ith an aggressive defense and an adequate offense, Plattsmouth snapped a sixteen game losing streak at the expense of the Syracuse Rockets. Dave Aschenhrener scored on a long run and an outstanding punt return for all the scoring in a 12-0 whitewashing of the Rockets. The following week the Devils ran into a Nebraska City team ranked among the slate’s top ten. The Devils kept it close the first half but fell to a second half onslaught by the Pioneers and fell by a 51-6 count. In the final game of the season the Blue Devils journeyed to Fairbury to do battle with the heavily favored Jeffs. After falling behind by 16-0 early in the initial period, the Devils scrapped back and trailed only 16-12 at halftime. The blue and white thoroughly outplayed the home team although neither squad could manage a T.D. in the second half, and the Devils walked away very unsatisfied losers by the same halftime score. Highlights of the season were long dashes by Ashenbrencr and the greatly improved aerial attack sparked by quarterback Gary Glup firing to receivers Charlie Schumacher, Tom Aylor, and Rick Collins. Sophomore fullback Bill Rephart gained valuable experience and promises to provide the Devils with plenty of offensive punch next year. 92 Barry and Dewey lead the way home. In major meets and invitationals, the Devils finished third in the Millard and Rlkhorn St. John’s Invitationals and the Twin Rivers and AKSARBEN meets. The Devil roundhallcrs, lacking height and experience, had a disappointing season. The only wins lor the Devils were an easy 64-41 conquest of Omaha Gross, and a 57-50 overtime upset of Nebraska City in the AKSARBEN Conference Tourney at Ralston. Seniors on the squad were Barry Jose, Keith Wilson, Kevin Case, and Charlie Schumacher. Mike hits from the comer. 97 Keith battles for a tough rebound. Dors she have nice legs, Barry? The Devil wrestlers, after finishing a lofty second in the tough Omaha North Invitational, were hurt by injuries the rest of the season. Kurt Grosshans, Tom Aylor, Dave Molinaro, Mark Brink, and Gary Gray were all injured and lost lor part of the season. Ted Osterholm dislocated his elbow and was out for the year. Despite these injuries, the Devils placed fourth in the Twin Rivers Conference meet, and finished fifth in the prestigious AKSARBEN Conference meet. Aylor and Grosshans led a Devil congregation to the Districts at Schuyler that gained the seventh spot. After winning their District titles, Tom and Kurt placed fourth in the state meet. What Will I Leave? t What will I leave when I leave these halls? The excitement of first days these last four falls. And what will I give to those entering in? The hope of things precious about to begin. What will I leave as I walk out that door? Would wisdom be mine had I tried a bit more? What will I give to those entering in? The hope of things precious about to begin. What w ill I do when 1 must say good-bye? W ill I feel that a part of me is about to die? What will I say to those taking my place? W ill I wish them luck as they begin this race? I’ll think of crowds and the games we’ve had Perhaps at first it will seem a bit sad. But I'll remember I must give up all of this And maybe won’t notice all I have to miss. W hat will I leave when I leave this school; Have I used this building as education’s tool? What w ill 1 leave those about to learn? W ill I let them know they’ve the torch to let burn? W hat will happen to the school spirit I leave now? W ill it keep it’s gleam—It must somehow. The smiles, and jokes, and all our friends, W ill they be the same when our schooldays end? What of the clubs and the dances too? W ill they be fun without me, without you? Will the teachers and classes still be the same When the roll call no longer includes my name? Of course, the school will do fine without me. But I'll miss it—that’s plain to see. The future will be mine with better things ahead. But I 'd gladly trade them for high school years instead. The school song still w ill ring in my ears As I walk out these doors after lour great years. But high school’s only a step along life’s way. And being an adult is great, so they say. What w ill I leave when I leave Plattsmouth High W hat makes it so hard to say good-bve?
