Miss Whalen counsels with two senior boys about furthering their education. An Average Days Work We, the graduating class of 1968, dedi- cate this annual to our sponsor, Miss Jessie Whalen, who with her help and un- derstanding, has guided us through the past four years. Miss Whalen came to the Plattsmouth Public School System in 1922. She began her career at Wintersteen School and in 1952 she became assistant principal. Prior to this time she taught High School and Junior High School classes. She has been helping students with their academic problems since then. When P. T. A. was active at P. H. S. , she was given a lifetime membership in that organization. The local chapter of the honor society is called The Jessie Whalen Chapter of the National Honor Society. As we continue on our way, we will think of her often and of her infinite wisdom in matters so important to our future suc- cess. 5 In an average day, we find Miss Whalen at her files many times. So often we are prone to sit and dream about that which is already past or those things we hope that the future holds for each of us. Life is more than one daydream after another. Rather each man's life with its individual complexities, must serve as a pattern and inspiration for another man’s thoughts and drives. Another year has passed and we now move closer to our life goals. To truly succeed one must do more than dream. True happiness and success has a more substantial foundation than daydreams. To truly succeed and be of service to humanity, a person must develop a determination geared to the times but anchored to good habits and sound practices. This yearbook is a symbol of that type of work and dedication. Congratu- lations to the sponsor, editors, and staff for a job well done. May this 1967-68 PLATTONIAN serve as a fitting climax to this year. 8 P.H.S. An ancient Teacher, whom many called Master, offers this great challenge to modern youth: To understand ourselves fully, to accept our- selves more wisely, to share ourselves more graciously, to devote our- selves more intelligently. Your future will be filled with responsibilities, opportunities, and chal- lenges. I hope you meet each one with a sincere desire to succeed. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1968. Principal P.H.S. It has begun, the pledge to our flag is recited, perhaps with meaning, perhaps with the dim hope of passing a few minutes. What lies ahead for that student, only one in the room knows for sure. . .the iridescent lights, the chalked blackboards, the grinding of the pencil sharpeners. Many days pass forward while falling parallel to so many more, yet their is a difference. Although parallel, nothing is repetitious. The concealed pages of the past open their covers and enlighten. The volume of research come face to face with the many of those it will know in the future. The artist draws the lines that may become a Rembrandt, and the problems of the world are solved by those, who despite their confusion today, will be the statesmen of tomorrow. But this is the way it is, and this is the way it must be. Although the lights of the present continue to shine and the pencil sharpeners never cease their grinding, the world has changed. In an instant the doors have been thrown open to the generation to come. And with this. . . they are seeing. co H Z M M '’I O S DZMtH n The 1967-68 PLATTONLAN has attempted to illustrate through pictures your present high school history. With the passing of years, the book will always be cherished as you reminisce your never to be forgotten high school days. The PLATTONIAN staff styled this years book through a calendar of the year effect. All events are illustrated with pictures as they occurred throughout the year. It is our hope that you will always remember your days at Plattsmouth High School. n One of our 8th grade history classes receives a A World History class finds new things about coins, lecture. Classroom Atmosphere Prevails Psychology class watches T. V. Classroom atmosphere is not too clear for some students, but for the most part, things going on in the classroom are not hard to understand. The determining fac- tor of class atmosphere lies in the relations between the teacher and students. This year, as always, those relations have been at their best throughout the year cre- ating the best atmosphere possible for the teachers and students. This atmosphere is further enhanced by the new devices in the classroom that help the learning process. This year has been a very good year for class atmosphere. SEASON REVIEW The Plattsmouth Blue Devils dropped their opener 32-12 against an overpowering Ralston eleven. Short passes and effective runs enabled the Devils to two TD's, one on a three yd. run by Dasher and the other a 31 yd. pass from Linder to Kimble. Plattsmouth, led by the running of quarterback Linder, smashed through a tough Crete line to give the Devils a 20-0 victory. The Devils were overpowered by the ground game of a tough Beatrice team 40-20 for their third game of the '67' season. The Orangemen dominated on first downs and yielded only five to Plattsmouth. The Devils came back strong against the Millard In- dians to grind out a 61-13 victory. A 34 point fourth quarter by the rugged Devils eliminated all hope of an Indian vic- tory. The power running of Brookhouser, the passing of Linder, and the rugged Plattsmouth defensive enabled the Devils to hold and defeat Auburn 28-19. A determined Devil team, despite several illnesses, bombed Falls City by running up a 53-6 homecoming vic- tory. Superior defensive effort by Morehead enabled the Blue Devil to recover four Tiger fumbles. Kildare's superior kicking added eleven points with 32 and 38 yd. field goals and five extra points. A cold night and a fired-up Syracuse eleven defeated the Devils 41-20. Two intercepted passes and two Devil fumbles powered the Rockets on for their surprising home- coming victory'. The Blue Devils closed their home season schedule by rolling over Nebraska City 54-25. Four outstanding TD runs and two aerials by Linder helped chalk up a 40- 13 Twin Rivers Conference Champion- ship title for the Devils while defeating Fairbury. On June 21, 1967, the Plattsmouth High School Band embarked on a trip not soon to be forgotten by the Band members. The Band, under the direction of Mr. Jack Herweg, participated in the Red River Valley Exhibition that took place in Winnipeg, Canada. Many projects were sponsored by the Band Parents so that the trip could be possible. After crossing the border into Canada, the Greyhound buses made their way to the dormitories of the Nazarene College in Winnipeg, where the band was to stay. The band was quite active during the five days it was in Canada, the band marched in a four-mile parade and in a two-mile parade through the streets of Winnipeg. It also received a second runner-up trophy in the competition held at the Red River Val- ley Exhibition. After the competition was completed, the Plattsmouth Band took part in a Mass Band Concert given by all the competing bands. Although there was a busy schedule to follow and many practice sessions, the members of the band found ample time to sight-see and hunt souvenirs. It was a mem- orable experience for all the band members and a trip they will never forget. The band's first stop. A view of the dormitories of the Nazarene College where the band stayed. STATE RUNNER-UPS SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Plattsmouth unleashed its best track season by winning the season opener at the Auburn Triangular, March 26. Max Linder led the Devils with wins in both the low and high hurdles, a school record toss in the discus, and ran on the winning mile relay team. Also aiding in the victory were Denis Strobel, who took 1st in the 440 and the broad jump; and Nick Kimble, who snared wins in the 100 and 220 yard runs. All participants at the Peru State College Invitational gazed in awe and respect as the 3 sport letterman, Denis Strobel, swept the 880 in a meet record time, tied for 1st in the pole vault, placed 1st in the 440 and broad jump, and anchored the victorious mile relay team. Cold and windy weather brought about a defeat to the Devil tracksters as Ralston won the dual against Plattsmouth, 65-62. Turning in wins were Nick Kimble in the 100 and 440, Denis Strobel in 222, 880, and pole vault, and Max Linder posting victories in the low and high hurdles. Victories in 6 of 16 events entitled the Devils to another victory at the Millard Invitational. Emery Bashus came through with a winning 47' 8 3 4 toss in the shot put department, while teammate Larry Austin took first place in the discus with his throw of 134' 7 1 2 . Dennis Dasher won his field event by break- ing his own pole vault record of 10' 6 with a vault of 11' 6 .
