Plattsmouth High Dedication To Miss Margaret Kroese, who has helped so many hundreds of students in the ten years she has been teaching at P.H.S., both in our quest for knowledge and by giving us inspiration to further our education, we gratefully dedicate this, our 1965 Plattonian. 2 Superintendent Norval Trout Congratulations to you, class of 1965, upon your graduation from Plattsmouth High School. Commencement is the beginning of a new phase in your life. Many of you will continue your formal educa- tion while others will find his place in the community working at work of his choosing. We hope that the les- sons that you have learned during these school years will make the solution of your problems just a little easier. Best of luck. Norval R. Trout Administration Assistant Principal Jesse Whalen Principal Joe York Education is more than an ad- venture. It can be pursued collectively but must be achieved individually. And, there is more to an adventure than just the destination. The person who reaps the richest reward from travel is that one who can see and observe the wondrous things along the way. To the class of 1965 along with my personal best wishes, I also ex- tend a challenge that each of you seek more than just a destination--seek also those wonderful things along the way such as friendships, compas- sion, integrity, and above all an abiding faith in His power. It is a symbol of ed- ucation, a symbol of the pride which a person has in his alma mater. For the Juniors, the class ring is a symbol of maturity. The day they slip it on their finger, they feel that they have come of age. The Juniors selected their ring style at the beginning of the school year. They received them February 5, 1965 and have worn them with pride ever since. The first major money making project for the Juniors was the magazine sales. Prizes were given to the top salesmen for a job well done. They also sold concessions at the home football and basketball games to help raise money for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Juniors make a mad dash to purchase their long awaited rings. 33 FIRST ROW: Kate Waterman, Carolyn Wildman, Gloria Dasher, Jeri Payotn, Sharon Pullen, Bonnie Welstead, Dixie Wilson, Debbie Woster, Donna Sporer. Freshmen H-M Joining the family at Plattsmouth High this fall were the Freshmen. With forlorn looks, they shy- ly entered the school building and moved between classes trying to find someone who knew just where to go. But by the end of the, first week they had familiarized themselves with their schedule and their new surroundings. These green freshmen , like all freshmen, were soon accepted by the upperclassmen and be- gan to make many acquaintances. Full of ambition, our freshmen began to parti- cipate in the various organizations of our school in promoting great school spirit. Of course, they have found that they are not as privileged as the upperclassmen and often have to take last place. Freshman Linda Dasher questions whether she will get through this stack of books in the next four years. 40 FIRST ROW: Nancy Ramge, Bill Spangler, Tom Osthus, Terri Pfeifer, Craig Smith, Patsy Schmidt, Steve Nielsen. The yearbook staff, under the direction of Mr. Danielson, worked hard to produce the Plattonian. The staff began its work early in the fall and still found deadlines came too soon. Three veteran's--Norma Martin, Janet Gensemer, and Betty Meisinger took charge of operations. The group met weekly after school in addition to extra hours spent in soliciting ads, selling yearbooks, decorating for fund-raising dances, etc. Although worried and depressed at times, the staff found their work rewarding when deadlines were reached, finances were solved, and the books were is- sued. Extras include additional pages, special effects, larger pictures, and more copy. The staff takes pleasure in presenting to you the 1965 yearbook. Mr. Danielson and Betty, business manager. Honors Best Dressed Plattsmouth High School’s Ten Best Dressed Stu- dents were honored at the annual Sweetheart Dance sponsored by the Platter Staff. The faculty voted for four seniors, and two from every other class to rep- resent the best dressed students in high school. The faculty voted for the ten students with these qualifica- tions in mind; neatness, cleanliness, and appropriate- ness of dress. Students who were chosen are: Janet Gansemer, Mary Weber, Dave Kimble, and Dave Nielson from the senior class; Christine Uher and Bill Wehrbein from the junior class; Mary Svoboda and Lloyd Fitch from the sophomore class; and Nancy Evers and Larry Smith from the freshmen class. Happy royalty, Mary and Lloyd smile for the camera. 66 The Penny Carnival Cake winners have a hard time choosing their prize. On March 19 the National Honor Society sponsored the Penny Carnival. The evening was divided into a carnival and a dance. The carnival booths included: a horror house, a shave-the-balloon booth, a pie- throwing booth, a cake walk, and a basketball throw as well as many others. According to tradition, the classes chose the roy- alty by the amount of money contained in the penny jars. The seniors again took the honor of having the royalty from their class. Linda Frazier and Dave Kimball were crowned king and queen. Their attendants were: Dottie Woster and Joe Aschenbrenner (juniors), Suzanne Solomon and Ray Jacobs (sophomores), and Pam Brook- hauser and Bill Spangler (freshmen). No, no! I've had enough. Apple Blossom Time was the theme se- lected by the junior class and their advisor, Mr. Adams, for the 1965 Junior-Senior Prom. Approximately 280 attended the banquet served by the V. F. W. The program for the evening consisted of several numbers by the boys' quartet and the girls' sextet. The speaker for the evening was LeRoy Leland, a professor from Peru State College. Dixie Wilson (Register of Deeds) checked over the books. Bonnie was glad she worked hard campaigning. Twelve juniors traveled to the court- house to participate in County Government Day on April 14. Mr. Johnson, who was in charge, announced the event several weeks earlier. The junior class was divided into two parties, the Federalists and the Nation- alists. Each party chose a chairman: Bob Loffer-Nationalist, Connie Rhyland- er-Federalist. The chairmen were to find out what office the members of their party wanted to run for. A primary election was held with the juniors voting for the candidates of their party, therefore, nar- rowing the field down to two candidates-- one from each party. Vigoi-ous campaigning by each candi- date then began. The climax of the cam- paigning was the convocation at which time all 24 candidates gave their cam- paign speeches. Then the voting for the candidates was held. The candidates were (winners first): Sheriff-Jack Gorton, Joe Shown; Judge- Darrel Draper, Karen Hostetter; Attor- ney-Mary Jo Lebens, Phil Meisinger; Direc- tor of Welfare-Debbie Woster, Walt Ful- ton; Commissioner-Gary Wilson, John Thompson; Clerk-Cindy Greenwood, Jeri Payton; Clerk of District Court-Kathy Rice, Candy Carper. Our average number of points per game was sixty one point four compared to sixty two point nine for the opposition. If field goal percentages could be compared to the number of games a team wins or loses, the Devils should have won five more games. The team put together some very impressive victories in matches with some of the toughest teams in both the AK-SAR-BEN and Twin Rivers Conferences. Notable among these were the defeat of Ralston and Auburn in a doubles match here on April 13th. In addition, some outstanding talent was shown among the freshmen and sophomores. The team consisted of: Chuck Ault, Jim Dietz, Mike Gall, Jerry Gorton, Rod Jenkins, Mike Kief, Ron Marsh, Bill Pankonin, Bill Spangler, John Speck, Mike Stastka, Don Story, and Robert Todd. Letterwinners were: Brad Bourne, Mike Brookhouser, Scott Davis, Max Linder, and Craig Smith. 84 Cindermen Coach McKnight and his assistants started the year with twenty - three letterwinners among a squad of seventy-six. Their effort met with success despite poor weather early in the season and a rash of unfortunate injuries. The squad did well in the early meets but as the season wore on much improvement was shown among all members. A hard earned fourth was won at the Twin-Rivers Meet. Later the squad qualified four of its members for the State Track Meet. They were: Lenny Bowen, Dick Church, Dennis Smith and Bob McClanahan. A substantial quantity of talent among the younger members, including some outstanding freshmen, insures a fine start for next season. Coach Humphrey gives Brad Bourne pointers as the rest of the folf squad looks on. And so ends our account of the school year 1964-1965. The seniors have walkdd down the hall for the last time as students at Plattsmouth High; the classes have moved up and onto broader horizons. Those who remain here at Plattsmouth High School will add a little more warmth each day to these mem ory-filled halls. Those who leave and go on to their chosen professions will look back over their shoulders every once in awhile and remember those won derful days spent at Plattsmouth High.
