Mrs. Latham heads the special education program, playing Mr. Borwick teaches speech therapy. His purpose is a dual role—teaching mornings at Platteview and after- to help students develop good speech habits, noons at the Springfield Elementary. Special Services The special educa- tion program at Platte- view continues to be an important part of the ev- eryday schedule. The stu- dents involved have an opportunity to re-estab- lish the basic skills which are a necessity in one's advanced educa- tion. Individual assist- ance is the key note as basic skills are inte- grated with real life ex- periences. Oral and writ- ten communication is stressed heavily to allow students to become se- cure in expressing them- selves knowledgeable on current topics. 8

Exploring Science Science department arrived this year with a boom. A fresh chemistry class succeeded in exploding three hy- drogen generators in one day. It was a first. Mr. Pharoah is head of the sci- ence department and teaches subjects with enthusiasm. Outlines were pre- dominate as the younger classes learned that they didn't have time to talk. The freshman class studied very vigorously throughout the school year. A course In Physical Science was Introduced and many hours of time was spent mastering it. Linda Richardson carefully does her lab assignment in Chemistry. Mr. Pharoah continues to teach with his unique sense of humor. 9
