This is our letter to the world offering glimpses to the past . . . seeing our friends and acquaintances in settings that once seemed natural, at a time when we were not aware of the contributions any of us would make to society. The Trojan Image 1969 THE NINETEEN SEVENTY TROJAN PLATTEVIEW JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SPRINGFIELD, NEBRASKA Table of Contents Academic 4 Organizations 65 Students 30 Activities 84 Sports 48 Advertising 96 Each of us contribute in our own way . . . as we draw the riches of Learning “Administrations Lead the Way” The main interest of our admin- istration is to see that every student receives the adequate education he or she deserves. Still, we can't just stop there. It takes much patience, time and effort with a faculty and student body of this size. No one but the adminis- trators themselves, will ever know what problems they encounter in keep- ing a school going. Also, it's up to the administration to see to it that the student discipline is kept in control; according to regulations. Mr. Dambrosia - Principal Mr. Gerdes - Counselor Mr. Luttman - Superintendent 6 “Secretaries Lend Assisting Hand Platteview's office staff con- sists of two very helpful women - Mrs. Gosch and Mrs. Nielsen. Ev- eryday they are kept busy with many jobs; attendance records, lunch tickets, giving students information and helping the administration with clerical duties. Mrs. Nielsen - Secretary 7 The office staff performs many duties. Mrs. Gosch - Secretary Mrs. Latham heads the special education program, playing Mr. Borwick teaches speech therapy. His purpose is a dual role—teaching mornings at Platteview and after- to help students develop good speech habits, noons at the Springfield Elementary. Special Services The special educa- tion program at Platte- view continues to be an important part of the ev- eryday schedule. The stu- dents involved have an opportunity to re-estab- lish the basic skills which are a necessity in one's advanced educa- tion. Individual assist- ance is the key note as basic skills are inte- grated with real life ex- periences. Oral and writ- ten communication is stressed heavily to allow students to become se- cure in expressing them- selves knowledgeable on current topics. 8 Exploring Science Science department arrived this year with a boom. A fresh chemistry class succeeded in exploding three hy- drogen generators in one day. It was a first. Mr. Pharoah is head of the sci- ence department and teaches subjects with enthusiasm. Outlines were pre- dominate as the younger classes learned that they didn't have time to talk. The freshman class studied very vigorously throughout the school year. A course In Physical Science was Introduced and many hours of time was spent mastering it. Linda Richardson carefully does her lab assignment in Chemistry. Mr. Pharoah continues to teach with his unique sense of humor. 9 Ruth Rowe, Tonia Ruff, Marlene Dean and Jeanne Siewert Kathy Schneider and Jeanne Siewert are absorbed in the find art amusing and fun. painting of a masterpiece. A Creative World Mr. Bates has his hands full teaching grades 7-12. This year Mr. Bates entered his student's projects in three contests. Jerry McCune and Cheryl Buchanan won state honors in the Scholastic Magazine contest and their entries went to New York City for a National Contest. World-wide Knowledge The World Geography class listens attentively to Mr. Salberg's lectures. Donna Kuehn volunteers her answer for the class. Mr. Salberg's field of teaching is centered around Social Studies. He is the Freshman and Sophomore instruc- tor. The main objective in his courses is to learn . Mr. Salberg's distinct voice can be heard around the halls as he gives forth his knowledge to his students. Ron Keller watches Rita Sorenson as she points out the main cities of China. Above Mr. Salberg listens in disbelief to one of his students answer his question. 11 Civic Responsibility Is Mans First Duty Mr. Broghammer led his classes with a spirit every student worked hard to match. His daily lectures always helped guide a student towards a better understanding of mans plight and a better test grade on Friday. He teaches History and Government, and was Senior Class sponsor. Mr. Broghammer's main point in teaching is ’’individuality.” Mr. Broghammer keeps his classes amused with his clever antics and quick wit. J. Erhart was of the many students to present reports to the class. This is to broad- en the student’s knowledge by oral recitation. 12 The Modern Problems class, new this year, looks intently at their instructor. Well, most of them do. . . . a One, and a Two • • The Platteview Stage Band got a superior rating at contest. They are (bottom): R. Broshears, A. Milks, G. Schneekloth, J. Gosch, D. Hahn, D. Lienemann. Second row— J. Mann, C. Cloyd, R. Cain, B. Schneekloth, L. Rowe. Third row-- K. Ruff, D. DeLuna, K. Vampola, B. Adair, Director Mr. Leigh, B. Nielsen, L. Glesmann. The Pep Band contributed very much to the spirit of Platteview at all sporting events. Mr. Leigh’s term of endearment, Hammerhead,” went into retirement this year. 13 Mr. Sayers explains to his eighth graders how to add the finishing touches to their lamp projects. On this particular project, the boys learned both carpentry and electricity. From left, the boys are Steve Peoples, Roy Cunningham and Jeff Salberg. Shop Talk Mr. Sayers instructs several classes throughout the day. Each one empha- sizes a different phase of industrial arts. The junior high groups explore the realm by dipping into a va- riety of projects. Freshman boys go into a bit more spe- cialized field by working with woods and sheet metal. The Shop department offers a two-year course in me- chanical and architectural drafting. At the left. Clay Bran- denburg is shown working on one of his major projects in the metals and welding class. Mr. Sayers displays a model of basic house framing. 14 Eat and Sew The junior high, home ec. class entertained guest from the Shop and Art classes. From left S. Becker, D. Glesmann, Miss Saltmarsh, G. Palmer, L. Carr, T. Barton, B. Kracher, R. Broshears, M. Gates and C. Kreifels. Gail Cannon listens to Miss Saltmarsh's explanation. Miss Saltmarsh gives many inter- esting lectures in her Home-Ec. class- es. She manages this department and sees that all girls taking her class be- come well-rounded in learning to cook, sew, crochet and knit. Connie Laschansky works on her dress project for the style show. 15 Work It Ou The physical ed- ucation program was set up differently this year. The boys and girls each had differ- ent instructors. Mr. Brandenburg led the boys to a more physi- cally fit body by ex- plaining the proper exercises for each in- dividuals needs. Al- though these boys look a bit out of shape it's part of Mr. Branden- burg's job to get them looking their best, as they are future Trojan football, basketball, wrestling and track teams. Above—boys prepare for physical fitness test, which begins early each spring. Below—It's warm up time for the 8th grade boys. Everybody touch your toes now. 16 All right you guys, get busy, made famous by Miss Steider. Bend, Left, Risht . . . Miss Steider is the girls P.E. instructor and coaches the girls volleyball and track teams. With the help of Mrs. Camp, the student teacher. Miss Steider helps the girls to be- come coordinated but at the same time graceful. The girls not only learn the basis for a physic- ally fit body, but learn to co-operate and re- spect their fellow classmates. Bottom row—S. Weatherford, J. Hibberd, D. Cain, E. Grell, B. Wllcoxen. C. Bestmann, V. Haecke and S. Kantor decorate the annual Shorthand Christmas tree. Mr. Ahl nods passing approval to his future secretaries. Thick Cut Area Training girls for stenographic and secretarial positions is Mr. Ahl's main goal in life. He teaches his classes with a special brand of humor, and a relaxed atmosphere. The student is encouraged to make her own decisions on many complicated pro- jects. Alice Hibbler did her thing for the Christmas season. D. Camenzind, D. Adams and G. Jones are diligently typing. 18 « w j | a The Bookkeeping students are fiercely working to complete a major Where Assets Grow ''- Mr. Elckhoff—famous for his penetrating questions. Mr. Eickhoff's typing class drills, drills and still drills, but in the end he always come out with a fantastic group of typists. Again this year, the Business Department participated in the Business Contest at Marian High School. Seventeen students competed in the contest from Platteview. D. Camenzind and S. Milks are the only two girls who received superior ratings. These typing students are working toward speed as well as controlled accuracy where drill is a fact of life. 19 Above, attentive seventh graders learn the fundamentals of social studies and English. The First Steps Mr. Troxel taught seventh and eighth grade block, speech, junior and senior class plays and coached Junior high bas- ketball. The seventh graders studied Greek Myths, the Adventures of Hercules, Ne- braska and the states history, and made maps and flags of the countries studied. They have looked at most all countries in the world and have compared them to ours. M. Milks, J. Schrum, P. Pulsifer, R. Rowe, and K. Schneider Mr. Troxel listens to his students carefully, during presentations and discussions. Above, Mr. Buza holds a discussion on an assignment. Students are very attentive in Mr. Buza's class. The seventh and eighth graders do their homework. The Mighty Eighth The new varsity basketball coach also taught seventh and eighth grade block and math. Throughout the year, his students have made Egyptian and Greek boats to go along with their study of these countries. They con- structed feudal castles and made Far Eastern flags. Individual reports were given on all European countries leading into a group report of Europe itself. In math they have been intro- duced to the metric system and the protractor, one of the geometric tools. J. Hibberd, P. Cramer, and C. Cloyd are fasinated. 2 How to Write It Above, B. Sedlacek and N. Cowsky confer on their English. Below, W. Lugsch labors, taking notes for her research paper. Above, Miss Malolepszy sets the stage for a writing exercise which became a standard this year. The English classes, led by Miss Malolepszy, were kept very busy throughout the year. Different methods of teaching were introduced into her classes which proved to be very inter- esting for the students. Studying English literature, reading a variety of books, writing to music and working on their themes were all accomplished. Below, G. Clark, C. Pelzer and A. Kibbler discuss journalism. 2? Where to Get It Above, A. Cornwall takes notes for her research paper. Below, Mrs. DeShazer performs one of her many tasks and offers her pleasant smile. The library was filled with many con- tributions from the students this year. They ranged from animals to modern art. These examples of art not only modernized and decorated, but also helped turn the library into a cozy, personal room. Under Mrs. De- Shazer's guidance, the library was turned into a place just like home, pleasant to be at, yet a learning environment. Below, librarian Wanda Vlerreggar gives assistance to Jim Kracher. 23 ijutai Zag, Klasse S. Startzer, J. Htbberd, S. Schneider and R. Wilson seem to find class very interesting. Mrs. Fiedler displayed her many talents while teaching Sophomore English and Ger- man I II. During the year Mrs. Fiedler held a series of films- the purpose of giving insight into the technology of film-making and fostering an appreciation for the non-verbal aspects of com- munication. This was a high note in new activities this year at Platteview. As a swing off, sev- eral students produced their own film, using animation and live actors. Sophomores: M. Keyes, L. Buchanan, L. Smith, J. Iske and D. Mrs. Fiedler instructs English and German. Pelzer make it look like English is easy. 24 Mr. Landberg is head of the Glee Department. We depart with happiness and a slight sadness. Platteview is a great place to be. 46 There were the games, skits and Pep Rallies, the many band trips, hours of study, and reflective mo- ments, and parties that left the Seniors with memor- ies to treasure forever. The Seniors have been very busy with extra-curricular activities and most of them have found them very rewarding. u 47 Your face is the one thing you can call your own . . . but your moments of glory must be shared with those watching. 49 Lost Won Won Won Won Won Won Won Won Seward Concordia 2-6 Louisville 32-8 Elkhorn 20-7 Wahoo Neumann 41-6 Central 47-0 Gretna 70-22 Weeping Water 66-12 Arlington 14-6 Valley 14-8 Trojan defender, Jerry Gosch, hurdles himself to stop an opponent as more Trojans close In to guarantee the mission. Despite the adverse weather conditions, they fought vigorously to achieve many glorious victories. It seems that all that hard practice every night became a great benefit to the school and the team. It left many happy spectators, eagerly waiting for that next victory. During halftime, Coach Salberg earnestly instructs the squad on the fine points of previous and up-coming plays. 52 Above: C. Overcoming their lack of height, lack of ac- tual experience and un- timely injuries, the team mounted a respectable 10-7 record for the 1969- 70 season. The Trojans were coached by Bill Buza, doing an excellent job in his first year at Platteview. Buza took the boys all the way to the districts, held at Syra- cuse where they suc- ceeded in taking second. Besides roaming the halls looking for news and trying to meet deadlines, the Journalism staff developed new ideas for the Trojan Tabloid. The paper was a great success this year. There were no editors, just staff members. Debbie Adams, Jim Sands, Shirley Kantor, David Kildow, and Alice Hibbeler make up some of the staff. 69 Miss Maloiepszy guided her staff very efficiently this year. Members are required to be cur- rently enrolled in two business courses and must write a theme on some phase of business to receive their pin. 70 Yearbook Staff Selection of staff members this year was difficult, but those who worked beyond their duties and did outstanding work were Editor Jane Hansen, Photographer Clay Brandenburg, and Business Manager Wanda Vierregger. The efforts of these three people created the backbone of the book. A great deal of appreciation also goes to Nancy Beck, Lavina Vinson, Kathie Shep- herd, Ann Cornwall and Karen Kracher for their work in writing and typing. Pep Club Creates Spirit in the 1969-70 Season This was another great year for Trojan sports. And behind each bit of action there stood the pep club. Without their cheering and team support there wouldn't have been such memorable seasons for the boys, pep club, fans and coaches. This year the pep club broke in two new co-sponsors, Miss Saltmarsh and Miss Steider. They had their hands full keeping the pep club under control. Some of the energy was harnessed and put to use in two major, fund-raising projects.
