while the Russians were winning gold medals at the winter Olympics, the Platte City Pirates were winning gold trophies in basketball tournaments to decorate the showcases of Platte City High School. In the Conference tournament the team came out next to the top with the second place trophy. Two weeks later the fourth place trophy at the Christian Brothers tourney helped push the Pirates ahead. The boys went on to place third in the conference, with a 5-3 record. The Regional tournament, held at Winston, was then the talk around school. After February 27, Platte City was headed for the State tournament. At the Regional, Stan George broke the school record for the number of points scored in a game. Stan ' s points totaled 51 in the game against Breckenridge. Two snowy rides to Blue Springs brought the team through the Sub-State tourney to the semi-finals of the State tournament at Columbia. A beautiful fourth place trophy provides evidence that this is the highest Platte City has ever gone in basketball competition. Meanwhile the Lady Pirates were very busy, too. For the second consecutive year the girls took first place in the Conference tournament and second place in conference standings with a 4-2 record. Sara Skelton broke the school reco-rd for girls with 45 points, scored in the Kearney game. As for individual honors Sara Skelton and Billye Lou Tatman made the All-Conference first team. Carol Boydston made the second team, and Roberta Kalousek and Judy Carter were given honorable mention. Platte City was honored to have three boys from PCHS on the All-Conference team. They were Stan George, Chuck Black, and Jerry Bond. Stan was also named to the District team; Jerry and Chuck received honorable mention. To top all individual honors, in April, Stan was named to the All-State Team. CONGRATULATIONS, KIDS! IT ' S BEEN A GREAT YEAR!
