.,.J - Speech and Debate V0.l«1.7 1 -rx Fiftst P acf MtHtCt Hi jh School For the second time in four years, the Pirate debaters have won first place in district competition; thereby, earning the right to represent the Northwest Missouri District at the State Debate Meet in Columbia on May 6 and 7. Members of the team are Don Wade, Ruth McCaleb, David Gust, and Arvid Johnson. Speech students from Platte City have had a chance to see the country this year. They have attended tournaments in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Texas, and confusion. The debate record this year is the best that Platte City has had in its four years of debate. Students placed third in the following tournaments: Rock- hurst, Washington, and Waco, Texas. They placed second at North Kansas City. In individual events, the students also did better than they have done In previous years. For the first time, Platte City had students winning two first places, one second, and two thirds. GeorgeAnne Tatman placed first in humorous interpretation at the Sedalia Novice Tournament and the St. Paul ' s Tournament. Ruth McCaleb placed second in poetry reading at St. Paul ' s and Billye Lou Tatman was close behind with third. R. B. Miller placed third in humorous Interpretation at the Sedalia Tournament. In district competition, Platte City received as many I ratings as any other school entered in the contests. The students entered in district competition and their ratings are: David Gust, Extemp Speaking, Ij Ruth McCaleb, Poetry Reading, I; Sara LuScholes, Prose Reading, Ij and Arvid Johnson, Radio Speaking, I. The National Forensic League Chapter at Platte City has jmnped from number seventeen In the state at this dme last year, to fifth, this year. The size of the chapter Is based on the number of members and their degrees. The highest degree possible is Distinction. The next degree Is Excellence, then Honor, and Merit.
