Awards were given for scholarship, leadership, service, special talents, and outstanding achievements in physical sports. The cho- rus and band received outstanding ratings in district contest, and went on to compete in state competi- tion. Governmental appointments, oratorical honors, art awards, and secretarial scholarships are included in the list of honors given to Plantation students. Thus, the student body of Plantation High breeds a wide range of talent, recognized on a local and national scale. A. Senior Hugh Trees broke four school records while he was in competition in Atlanta: and placed eighth in the South- eastern United States in the 200 yard freestyle. B. An essay by Martin Maxwell on Americanism was entered in a contest sponsored by the Sunrise Golf American Legion Post, and was called the most outstanding essay in the county. C. An outstanding art student, Joe Fleece, received the Burdines 1971 Scholastic Art Award. D. The University of Miami School of Music awarded Rick Edwards a private oboe scholarship. E. Governor Reubin Askew appointed Jim Jamieson to the Broward County Narcotics Guidance Council for a four-year term. Jim was the only student appointed to this position. F. The Broward County Educational Secretaries Association awarded Diane Leggiero a S300 Scholarship for outstanding work in the academic secretarial field.

Exchange, Exchangettes choose traditional Boys, Girls A. B, , D. E. Each year it is a traditional project for Ex- changettes to choose Boy of the Month and its brother club, Exchange chooses Girl ofthe lVIonth. A boy and girl are chosen for each of the twelve months of the year. Both boys and girls must be seniors, and they must have contributed some sort of leadership or service to their school andfor community to re- ceive the honor of getting a month.
