Many of these are based on citizenship, contributions to the school and community, and leadership. These are the DAR awards, presented to a senior girl, the Elks' club award, presented to a boy or girl in the upper 52 of his class, and the Velda Farms award, given to a boy and girl for their outstanding achievements. The Betty Crocker Award and the National Merit Finalists are selected by the outcome of exams. Boy's State and Girl's State, an annual affair sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, allows students to spend a week in the state's capital participating in a mock government. Students from all around Florida partici- pate and two boys and two girls, lone of them this year was Mary Pfaul, are chosen to represent Florida in Boy's Nation and Girl's Nation in Washington, D.C. Junior Chris Stephens also won a great honor as he placed first among 19,000 contestants in the Voice of Democracy speech contest. A. Winner of the Betty Crocker award, senior Jan Shenosky helps a beginning sewer. B. National Merit finalists, Janice Schott and Don Manis, read magazines. C. Seniors Jon Farley and Cathy Edwards are Velda Farm salutes. D. Junior Chris Stephens won a speech contest. E. Girl's Nation repre- sentative, Mary Belle Pfau, talks to a military leader. F. Mary Pfau also won the DAR award. G. Boy's State repre- sentatives, Jim Jamieson, Ralph Lindsay and Paul Blanchard discuss week's plans. H.
