Many of these are based on citizenship, contributions to the school and community, and leadership. These are the DAR awards, presented to a senior girl, the Elks' club award, presented to a boy or girl in the upper 52 of his class, and the Velda Farms award, given to a boy and girl for their outstanding achievements. The Betty Crocker Award and the National Merit Finalists are selected by the outcome of exams. Boy's State and Girl's State, an annual affair sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, allows students to spend a week in the state's capital participating in a mock government. Students from all around Florida partici- pate and two boys and two girls, lone of them this year was Mary Pfaul, are chosen to represent Florida in Boy's Nation and Girl's Nation in Washington, D.C. Junior Chris Stephens also won a great honor as he placed first among 19,000 contestants in the Voice of Democracy speech contest. A. Winner of the Betty Crocker award, senior Jan Shenosky helps a beginning sewer. B. National Merit finalists, Janice Schott and Don Manis, read magazines. C. Seniors Jon Farley and Cathy Edwards are Velda Farm salutes. D. Junior Chris Stephens won a speech contest. E. Girl's Nation repre- sentative, Mary Belle Pfau, talks to a military leader. F. Mary Pfau also won the DAR award. G. Boy's State repre- sentatives, Jim Jamieson, Ralph Lindsay and Paul Blanchard discuss week's plans. H. Finally 24 players are selected from the entire state as members ofthe All-State football team. Velda Farms also presented an award to Charlie Gilbertson as Best Blocker of the Year for the county. Because they earned a reward for their 10-0 record, the Colonels were given a banquet unlike those of previous years. The site was an elegant hotel of Ft. Lauderdale beach. At this banquet, the individual awards, lVlost Valuable Player, lVlost Deserving, Siva, lVlost Skulls loutstanding defensel and lVlost Stars lout- standing offensel were presented. Nine Plantation football players received honors from local newspapers: Mike Richards, All-County, All-Region, All-Stateg Chip Brockman, All-County, All- Regiong Scot McDaniel, All-County, All-Region: John Jones, All-Countyg Charlie Gilbertson, All-County, AllvRegiong Steve Walsh, All-Conference: Randy Kidd, All-County, All-Region: Pete Gaudian, All-County, All-Regiong Phil Eason, All-County, and Craig Smith, not pictured, All-County. C. Various other awards were presented: Charlie Gilbertson received the Velda Farms award ior Best Blocker, Chip Brockman and Handy Kidd received the Gold Helmet award and Phil Eason received the Siva award. D. During the Edison Pep Flally Coach Gillette holds up trophy from Broward Times. E. Senior Tom Zipperly received the trophy for Most Improved. F. The Most Valuable Player trophy went to Craig Smith. G. Captains for the 1970-71 season were Phil Eason, Charlie Gilbertson, Craig Smith, and Tom Zipperly. Coach of the Year was Coach Bob Gillette. 335
