HHis well-proportioned feet give him a good understanding in all matters.n CLHSS HISTORH A company of thirty-nine assembled September S, 1951, at training school P. C. G. S., under instructor Madeline Roddick. Here, under careful supervision, they quickly learned the fundamentals of the school. This company, being so large, was separated into two divi- sions, the morning class and the afternoon class. The youngsters amused themselves by playing house CDixie Lee Lane usually being the babyj, and by building in the sand box. Many dolls were brought to the miniature playhouse, and even the boys enjoyed them, although, of course, they wouldn't admit it now. Having completed this first period, they were now ready to begin the first year of their primary training, starting September 6, 1952, under instructor Lois Hayes, Company members included Stanley Anderson, Donald Bennett, Zada Coffman, Arthur Coppes, Lester Coppes, Wesley Dale Coppes, Barbara Cass, Devonna Fritts, Mary Louise Gilpatrick, David Henning, Alma Hinshaw, Frances Hyatt, Oscar Jones, Dixie Leei Lane, Ruth Marie Lord, Gertrude Loux, Earl Lupie, Carl Mauser, Richard Miller, Laurence Myrkle, Thomas Nelson, Laurence Ness, LeRoy Newkirk, Gloria Patterson, Earl Rogers, Edmond Schiefer, Doris Swanson, Fred Weir, Hazel Jean Weir, Virginia Weir, Betty Jean Wright, Evelyn Wright, Nadine Young, Frank Zink, Anna M. Vermeland, Jerry Mogg, Lewis Thomas, Ray- mond Hanson, Fred Meier, Richard Meier, and Nora Peters, During this time Tom Nelson proved his outstanding ability with the opposite sex, and two members, Jean Weir and Dixie Lee Lane, were permitted to carry the train of the May Pete Queen. Losses amounting to ten members were suffered at the end of this year. Advancing to their second year of primary training under Elizabeth Gill, company members, with the addition of Richard Brown, Gilmore Chilton, Leila Hough, Onilee Oliver, Bert Reynolds, George Walters, and Ermal Chilton, struggled with the added burden of new subjects. Taking time out from their lessons, however, the members found time to construct 'an Indian village and to enjoy an Easter egg hunt at Frank Zink's. Completing, their second year,-company members moved on to their third year of primary training under in- structor Olive Fry, during which time they set about mastering the multiplication table. Members added to the company were Virginia Banbury, Donald Hage, Bud Fanning, Jimmy Gronseth, and Richard Gillow. Successfully completing their primary training, com- pany members of P. C. G. S., with the addition of Dorothy Thorson, Harlan Wiley, and Jeanette Brunet, are now cert- ified to basic training under the guidance of Dorothy Erickson. The members of the company paused long enough in their quest for knowledge to partake in a production of the nShoemaker and the Elvesn. Sickness struck at training center P. C. G. S. and three members of the com- pany were quarantined for some time. The company suf- fered a loss of five members, one of which was promoted to advanced training. Further basic training, which included new subjects such as art, penmanship, and history, was undertaken by the members under the supervision of Mernie Miller. New additions to the company were Marjorie Eckman, Glen Johns, LeRoy Madsen, Helen McCabe, Donald Schoo, Charles Wildermuth, Patrick McQueeny, Betty Jo Soderberg, and Dale Shaddle. Instructed by Russell Cooper, the company members advanced into their sixth year of training. It was dur- ing this period that the company first organized, choos- ing as their president, Doris Swanson. The class'again paused, this time to take part in thc musical production, nHansel and Gretel,N which was presented twice, the parts being played by two different casts. Manual training was taken up by many of the boys under their competent teacher, Mr. Cooper, iwith some very useful articles being constructedrl Several of our best athletes, participat- ing in the track meet at Yorkville, distinguished them- selves by winning awards. On completion of their sixth year of training the crew members advanced into their seventh year, under the supervision of instructor Luanna Gould. During the holiday season the crew found time to decorate a huge Christmas tree in the lower hall. Six cheerleaders were chosen for our outstanding Junior High basketball teamg among them were three members of our crew, Devonna Fritts, Mary Louise Gilpatrick, and Phyllis Howen. Bud Fanning Joined and left classes so many times that we will make special note of it here, and hope he's settled down at last. The band received many of its outstanding members from this responsive class. In their eighth year of training the crew was dir- ected by instructor Betty Craiger. Due to illness of the instructor, the crew was put under the supervision of a substitute, Mr. Calvin, who made the girls' hearts flutter with his college air and entertained the boys with Paul Bunyan stories. Leila Hough and NTuckern Nelson received the annual Legion Award for being the two outstanding citizens of the class. Miss Craiger took the class to the Field Museum in Chicago, where much time was spent in viewing the wonders of the past and present. ' On completion of their primary training the crew entered their advanced training at Plano Community High School with Miss Gibson as class adviser. The freshies were initiated by being made to participate in a three- ring circus. Then the operetta NPicklesN was enjoyed by all members of the crew. Not all members partici- pated, but they enjoyed the presentation nevertheless. Leila Hough was voted the most popular girl in high school. The year was gaily ended with a picnic in Zink's woods. During the second year of their advanced training the crew's adviser was Miss Robinson. Since there were few extra-curricular activities this year for the class, we are going to use a little space to compliment the cheerleaders of P. C. H. S., two of whom are from this class- Leila Hough and Joann Junkin-- who have been out- standing for three consecutive years. In the third year of their advanced training the class presented NJune Madh under the supervision of Miss Manship. The crew advisers for this year were Miss Cagle, and Miss Bieber. This crew very ably presented the Junior-Senior Banquet. The gym was decorated gaily with streamers of pastel colors. Barbara Cass was elected May Queen for 1944. In their last year of advanced training the crew was under the supervision of the toughest C. O. in P. C. H. S., Mr. Miller. During this period the class pre- sented NBest Foot Forwardn, and many of the members participated in the operetta, Nln Gay Havannan. The Seniors contributed to the Red Cross, and sponsored a waste fat drive toward the war effort. Several indus- trious members of this class spent many evenings after school and after supper to get the yearbook, the N511- houetten, written and produced. Wh wish to take special note and to give our heartiest thanks to Mrs. Miller who has contributed much of her time helping to make this year's annual a success. e PROPHECY This is the Junior Class,0 pinchhitting for Drew Pearson, predicting that in ten years-- Mildred Christiansen will be using her out- standing ability on the basket ball floor pro- fessionally. Wendell Gramley, our own famous radio engineer, will be in Radio City. . Leila Hough will have worked herself up the hard way to be a tough top sergeant in the WACS. Gloria Patterson will be touring the country with her own accordion band. UTuckeru Nelson will be owner-manager of one of the largest airplane fleets in the United States. Jane Simms and Bud Fanning will win fame and fortune, even rivaling George Burns and Gracie Allan, contributing their humor and wit to vast radio audiences. Helen Sampson, registered nurse, may be found in one of the leading Chicago hospitals. As one would expect, her hair is in perfect order, her crispy white uniform immaculate--a perfect nurse. Betty Soderberg will be a very efficient secretary to an important railroad executive, but with that red hair we predict that she won't be his secretary long. Earl Rogers, after leaving the Navy, will be a captain of a luxury liner running from Los Angeles to our island of Japan. nTweezaN Gilpatrick will be a business woman with secretaries so numerous that anyone, except old friends, has difficulty in getting even a glimpse of HHar,H her without a hard-won appointment. Wiley, a popular orchestra leader, will have secured a Hollywood contract for his orches- tra. He will not only be seen in frequent pic- tures, but hook-up. Doris garten te folks with HRayIl will be heard often over a nation-wide Swanson will be a much-loved kinder- cher, endearing herself to the little her sweet ways. Niles, after the success of his costume for the nMystery Womann, will become one. of the most successful and scught-after dress designers inWAmerica Nadine Young, that intrepid lady explorer otherwise known as HBring 'Em Back Alive Youngn, will no doubt be the ideal assistant to Frank Buck. Glen Johns will continue his spectacular football career as one of George Halas's famous Chicago Bears. Joann of the Powers models, Junkin will be one of the most charming her hair without aid of Kreml outshining them all. Frank Zinatra, will have all crooning and his boyish Devonna Fritts, found in a To-'o Zink, using his stage name of Frank the girls wild about his grin. a food connoisseur, may be celebrated New York restaurant where no dish is served before she has tasted and passed upon it. HPlay Boyn Gerald Sawtelle will have made quite a name for himself. Charlotte Tripp will be Head Nurse at Copley Hospital, and will be voted nThe Nurse I Would Like Most To Take Care of Men. Shirley Samuelson will have attained her lifelong ambition to be a mathematics teacher in a Chicago high school. Her only worry is that one of her seniors is Joel Kupperman, the noted nQuiz Kidn. nRayn Hansen will be a highly renowned photo- grapher, his pleasant personality bringing forth the expressions in his subjects with which they like to be photographed. Barbara Cass will be famous for her taste and artistry in supplying just the right costume for any stage role. ' Fred Meier will no longer be just a nBuck Privateu in the United States Marine Corps, but will have been promoted to the rank of nMajorn. Beverly Wallis will be blowing that little silver whistle even harder when she is refereeing her own girls' gym classes at Plano High. Harold Dannewitz will be a great success as a mattress tester, for he is able to sleep anywhere and any time. Watch and see if these predictions don't come true! CLASS WILL We, the Class of 1944, of the Plano Community High School, in the County of Kendall and state of Illinois, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills made by us at any time. We, hereby devise, bequeath, and dispose thereof our worldly estate in the following man- ner. I To the Juniors, the Seniors leave all their diggity, manners, scholastic ability, and unending loyalty to the dear alma mater. Barbara Cass leaves her scholastic ability to Junior Adams. To Betty Weaver, Millie Christensen leaves her shy manner and quaint blushesg not that she nteds them, but just to have around in case ------- Harold Dannewitz leaves his engaging grin to Virginia Hughes. To Johnny Gilpatriok go Bud Fanning's cordu- roy pants. CThe dirty yellow ones.D Devonna Fritts leaves her most gracious thanks to Mr. Ulrich for all the recovered arti- cles she lost during the year. Mary Louise Gilpatrick leaves her ability to manage and organize to anyone who has need of it. To Duke Ewart, Wendell Gramley leaves his me- chanical ability for future use on his unpredict- able Pontiac. Ray Hansen leaves his meekness to be divided between Johnny Landis and Eugene DeCelles. To Helen, the Seniors leave their heartiest thanks for the numerous favors contributed through the years. Elaine Kolka is to have the honor Cwe ques- tion this point! of receiving Leila Hough's 'gum chewing and silly laugh. Glen Johns leaves his beautiful girlish legs to anyone who wants them. First come, first served. To Patty Heedy goes Joanne Junkin's HHolly- woodn walk. Q Fred Meier leaves his punctuality to Zada Coffman. We hope she puts it to use soon, for if she doesn't Helen's office pen will be worn out. Tucker Nelson has generously left his ath- letic ability to Bill, his brother. Not that he needs it, but just to keep it all in the family. Ray Niles has left to Leland Lueschen his manly physique. Gloria Patterson leaves her amiable dispo- sition to Mr. Hack. If it weren't for rationing we'd throw in a pound of sugar. fOr is that contrariness just a disguise?J Earl Rogers leaves his romantic inclinations which are so widely distributed throughout the school to anyone who has corresponding initials. To Alice Shaddle, Helen Sampson leaves her neatly arranged curls. Shirley Samuelson leaves to Honey Tatters the formula for her successful diet. Gerald Sawtelle has agreed to leave his ability to Ntake itn on the football field to Marion Priebe. Jane Simms leaves her sparkling personality to Charlotte Stein. Our most grateful thanks go to Mrs. Miller for the many hours spent in guiding us in the numerous activities engaged in since early grade school days. To little Evelyn Taylor, Betty Soderberg wills her stately height. Doris Swanson's general good behavior goes to Pete Kivitts. 2 Charlotte Tripp wills to Ellen Christensen her dependability on the newspaper staff. We need more like you, Charlotte. To Barbara Schumaker, Beverly Wallis leaves all their good times in the hope that Barbara will find someone to share them with next year. The angelic expression and manner of Jean Weir go to Hugh Meyer for use on his frequent trips to the office. Harlan Wiley has generously agreed to leave his fame and popularity with the Yorkville girls to Sonny Bergeson. To Bill Malmborg, Nadine Young leaves her motherly instincts as displayed in 'nJune Main. Oh, we admit nmullyu has instincts, but are they motherly? Frank Zink leaves to Miss Robinson his leng- thy strides. The Senior boys of the football squad leave to Coach Stephens this year's perfect record as an incentive to future teams. The Senior class leaves to Mr. Miller all of its ngold bricks,u and nprocrastlnatorsn to be safely locked away. To Miss Manship, we leave a Nmechanical cricketn for use in study hall. Miss Peterson receives our fondest thanks and gratitude for the time, skill, and patience she contributed to make the annual a success. To Miss Cagle, we leave an extra supply of pink slips to be given to future Seniors in last hour study hall. Being the last will and testament of the class of 1944, we hereby affix our signature. 'F X FGOTFBPAL The Plano High School football team of 1943 rose to the greatest attainable heights. They completed their season with an undefeated, untied record. This established the team as one of the greatest in Plano history. They naturally were the champions of the Fox Valley conference. The team compiled enviable records on both offense and defense. In the six perfect games they rolled up 206 points while holding their opposition to 18. Thus they had an offensive record of 54 points per game and a defensive record of 5 points per game. The team worked beautifully together to establish both records. This was the first year at Plano for Coach C. 'W. Stephens and he made a very impressive start. Plano opened their season with a bang as they served advance notice of what was to come by running up one of the biggest scores in years in crushing Plainfield, 68 to O. Then came sweet revenge on a team that took the championship out of Plano's grasp last year with two close victories--Yorkville. Plano really turned it on and came out on top of a lopsided 52 to 6 score. Sandwich offered a little trouble but Plano rose to the occasion and flattened her old rival, 28 to 12. On the second leg of the round robin, Plano encountered some more trouble but came through unscathed. Plano trounced Plainfield 54 to O and then ran into a very stubborn Yorkville eleven. After a hard-drawn-out game Plano emerged the victor 7 to O. In the season's finale Plano proved what a truly great team she was as she walked all over Sandwich to close a perfect season with a 59 to O victory. That gave Plano an undefeated, untied record for the year. Plano was one of only ten schools in Illinois to have a perfect season. Let's all hope that with the good material returning next fall the 1944 team will equal this record. The major letter winners were Captain Bud Fanning, a smashing fullback, Tucker Nelson, quick-thinking quarterback, Glen Johns, high-scoring left half who set a new Fox Valley Conference scoring record of 82 points, one more than was scored by the fleet right half, Harlan Wiley. Our brilliant line was made up of Gerald Sawtelle, Senior left end, a three-year letter winnerg big Ray Niles, Senior right end and reserve left half, Tom Sleezer and John Landis, a pair of second year guards and the first year men, Howard Cas- ner, a Sophomore tackle, Marion Priebe and Bill Malm- borg, freshmen tackles, and Bill Nelson, dependable Freshman center. The rest of the squad was made up of five letter- winners--Jack Benoit, Earl Lupel, and Duane Meier, Juniors, John Billingham, Sophomore, and Jerry Wiley, Freshman. All these boys, along with six first team men, will be back next year. The loyal never-failing subs, who will be back fighting for a place again next year, are Pete Kivitts, Bob Simms, Jim Parrish, and John Gilpatrick, Sophomores, and Bill Brown, Edward Kolka, Owen Cooper, Don Daley, and Don Smith, Freshmen. These boys all have two or three years to make the team as regulars. The squad lost six boys during the prac- tice season for various reasons. They were, Frank Zink, Dale Shaddle, Rex Wildermuth, Teenie Madsen, John Peters, and Chester Dreher. Bill Gray was the manager and, of course, enough can't be said for our coach, big Coach Stephens, who made and molded this great team. We are proud to present this team on the football page of the Plano Yearbook of 1944. The team start- ed the season strong, hit a slack spot, then fin- ished in impressive style. The overall season record was ll won and 7 lost. Plano made a very good showing in the Little Ten Conference, by a record of 7 won and 5 lost. Plano failed to place in either the Little Ten or District Tournament, although they bowed to the eventual winner of one and the runner-up of the other. Highlights of the season were victories over Serena, Leland and Waterman, three of the strongest teams in the Little Ten, twin victories over Sandwich, and one over Yorkville, both traditional rivals, a thrilling defeat to Geneva in the semi-finals of the District Tournament, and decisive victories -over Hinckley, Big Rock, Paw Paw, Rollo, and Plainfield. This was Coach Stephens' first year and the indi- cations for the future are very encouraging. The coach has a host of under-classmen left for next year and when they have a little more experience and have learned his system they should really carry on. The personnel of the squad varied as boys left for the service. and Freshmen improved and moved up. The team was originally composed of four Seniors and a Junior, but ended up with two Seniors, two Juniors, and a Freshman on the first five. The entire first squad was composed of Captain Tucker Nelson, Glen Johns, Harlan Wiley, Ray Niles, Harold Dannewitz, Jack Benoit, Richard Hough, Tom Sleezer, Bob Parrish, John Landis, Jim Parrish, John Billlngham, Pete Kivitts, Bill Nelson, Jerry Wiley, Bill Brown, Owen Cooper, Bill Gray, and Leland Lueschen. Don Smith served as mana- ger. Both Senior guards, Glen Johns and Harlan Wiley, left for service in mid-season, weakening the squad. Their places were ably filled by ambitious under- classmen. A new school scoring record was established by Captain Tucker Nelson, as he made a new record for the third consecutive year, raising this year's total to 250 points. Last year's total was 215, the record up to that time. The basketball boys played and worked hard all during the season and deserve a lot of credit fer their fine sblrit and showing. Coach Stephens deserves a lot of credit for his handling of The boys, his leadership, and fine example. The cheering section also deserves much praise for its loyal support and inspiration, as well as the townspeople who turned out for the games. We close the season by saying nwell donen and eagerly await next year to see what the boys do with the fine start they got this year. The spring sports program for Plano High School was strictly intramural-Ha few weeks polishing basket- ball for next yearg spring football, the groundwork for next fallg and a little track, for conditioning legs and wind. There is no interscholastic track since not many schools around here have track and we don't have a complete program ourselves. The action of ln Gay Havana takes place in the patio of the lsla Q6 Cuba, a newly-opened hotel under the management of Senor Alvarez, The first guests are a tourist party consisting of the neadle sisters, the newly-wed Potters, and a group of American college boys under the leadership of Stan and Tom. Later they are joined by Margot, an attractive Cuban girl, and her mysterious companion, Senora X. The perennial Latin-American revolution breaks out and the entire party is confined to the hotel. Stan falls in love with Margot while Tom pays court to Carmen, the daughter of Senor Alvarez. Carmen, while reciprocating Tom's affection, is pre- vented from acknowledging her true feeling by the over zealous guardianship of her ubiquitous chaperone. Senor Valdez, a Cuban patriot, finds refuge in the hotel. He is seeking important government documents. The climax of the drama centers about the disappearance of Margot and the mysterious kidnapping of George Potter. Finally, Margot, her secret mission accomplished, returns to the hotel. George re-appears and discloses the identity of his captcr, Senora X, who is the real bearer of the documents Sr. Valdez is seeking and the father of Margot. The lovers' problems are worked out and everyone is happy. Much of the success of the operetta was due to the attractive stage setting. Alice Shaddle painted a scene and made patterns for decorations on the stage. These patterns were used by the girls of the music classes and Mr. Ulrich. They have had a busy year. Singing four parts for male voices in the boys' classes, three and four parts for women's voices in the girls' groups, and four part mixed harmony, make up the major portion of the work of these classes. They have appeared publicly at: Oct. l - Plano Lutherans' Fiftieth Anniversary Dec. 3 - Operetta Cdescribed elsewhere! Feb. lu - Father-Son Banquet May 8 - Mother-Daughter Banquet May 25 - Commencement Other projects of the classes included the study of the work of the masters of music as per- formed by great musical organizations. Records make much of this available, but on Feb. 19, nine- teen music students went to hear the Chicago Sym- phony Orchestra and on April 21, eleven attended the opera NMignonW performed by the Metropolitan Opera'Company of New York. Some have attended non their ownn. Many feel they are now better able to understand and appreciate good radio music because of these trips. ' When Bud Hooper invites glamorous movie actress, Gale Joy, to the Prom and also asks his own girl, Helen Schlesf singer, the fun begins. Bud's roommates, Hunk Hoyt and Dutch Miller, try to help him--but only make matters more humorous. When the girls, Ethel, Minerva, Blind Date, Miss Delaware Water Gap, and Helen, arrive accompanied by their chaperone, Miss Smith, the boys are at their wits' end. The girls, however, become quite angry when the boys pay too much attention to Gale. Greene, a quiet, mild- mannered youth has a Blind Date, a raucous voiced blonde. Satchel, a blundering boy, has the glamorous Miss Delaware Water Gap for his date. The Blind Date solves the girls' problem by causing them to attack Gale Joy and tear her clothing to shreds. Prof. Reeber then steps in, to expel Bud. Mother Lloyd, the boys' housemother, is much relieved when the trouble seems to have died down. When Gale Joy and her manager, Kay Haggerty, find out that this is going to happen, they contrive, with Char- lotte Billings, a girl reporter, to frame the Professor. The ruse works and Bud is exonerated. Gale Joy receives some much needed publicity, the school receives fame and a football team--much to the joy of the Old Grad--and Bud and Helen are finally reunited. Mrs. Dinwiddie, the housekeeper, though she calls on him in every emergency, is doubtful whether to address him as an equal or as one of the family. All the women fall in love with the mysterious Clarence while Violet intrigues the men. The discovery that Clarence is in reality a renown- ed entomologist leads to the reconciliation of the Wheelers, and Clarence, backed by the offer of a job in Washington, proposes to Violet while Bobby and Cora con- sole each other. Others who contributed much time and skill were: Gloria Patterson, Mildred Christensen, Doris Swanson, Devonna Fritts, Jean Weir, Betty Soderberg, Joann Junkin, Barbara Cass and Charlotte Tripp. We were particularly fortunate in our Editor in Chief who brought the annual through to completion in spite of the many difficulties encountered. Special mention should be made of the generous assist- ance of Mr. Robert Lincoln in photography. Several of our pictures would have been impossible without him. The staff photographer was Mr. Blankenberg of Kankakee. The yearbooks were financed by the subscription fee of one dollar and a half and proceeds from the waste fat drives. p The staff has made a sincere effort to produce a good book. S.n Under the old name the staff met Sept. 15, with Mrs. Miller who acted as faculty advisor, to organize for the year 1945-44. With several new ideas and new members, they looked forward to a very pleasant, active year. Membership in the state and national scho- lastic press associations provided valuable crit- ical service and inspiring helps. One of their suggestions which brought immediate action was to change the name to one more suitable for a school newspaper. After some study and discussion UP1ano Hi Planetu was adopted. A new masthead was plan- ned, with Alice Shaddle as artist. She also made the designs for the department titles uSportsU and Wln the Grooven. The first copy of UPlano Hi Planetn in its new dress appeared February 2. It was approved by the public as well as the students and we hope it lasts for years to come. It appears each week of the school year as a feature of the Kendall County News published in Plano. We arc very grateful to Mr. Faxon and his staff for their support. Weekly contributors to the paper were: Sally Lord, feature writcrg Mary Louise Gilpatrick, columnist nln the Grooveng Tucker Nelson, sports, and Shirley Samuelson, exchange notes. ' Z r 0 .. W ? 1 ! , f 4 'J f'. , , . ,, THE HFXNGCUT Into student circles came a new idea this year--a recreational center. Sponsored by the P. T. A. and enthusiastically approved by the high school students, a working committee consisting of Mary Louise Gilpatrick, Tucker Nelson, and Sally Lord, was elected to meet with the P. T. A. committee--namely, Mrs. L. N. Shaddle, Mrs. A. E. Lord, Mr. Erwin Telling, and Mr. P. H. Miller--to make plans for this new project. . One of the most important contributions was the place in which to congregate, the private dining room of Telling's restauranta made available by Mr. Telling. Then there was the recorded music for dancing, which was furnished for a while by Wendell Gramley and Mr. Dick Titzel, and was later supplied by a victrola which Dick Miller fixed up especially for that purpose. Records were bought from contributions made by students--later from proceeds from the box social. After much discus- sion of suitable names, this center was christened HThe Hangout,n decorated in purple and white, and on every Friday night became a merry meeting place for dancing and general good fellcwship. Decorated anew on Hallowe'en, it was the center of a gay scavenger hunt. Mistletoe, set off by bright fes- toons of red and green, adorned it during the Christmas Holidays. Lacy frills, red hearts, and cupids made a bower of loveliness for the happy throng at the Hangoutis Valentine box social. What would Leap year have been without the Hangout to which the girls took their dates? Even St. Patrick's Day was not forgotten. Students from all the classes pitched .in to make this thing their own, and the parent supervisors helped in every conceivable way. All in all, the hangout-was a huge success, made possible only by the enthusiasm and cooperation of everyone involved. PEP CLUB The Pep Club was organized September 22 with Mr. Miller presiding. They elected the following officers: President ------ Mary Louise Gilpatrick Vice President ------ Helen Sampson Secretary-- ---- Jean Weir Two groups of .cheerleaders were chosen for the year: Senior Cheerleaders ----- Joann Junkin Leila Hough Sally Lord Junior Cheerleaders ----- Patsy Fanning Pat Sauer Dolores George The Senior Cheerleaders, dressed in purple skirts and white sweaters, led cheers for the first team while the Junior Cheerleaders, dressed in white skirts and purple sweaters, led the yells for the second team. Most of the meetings were devoted to practic- ing and working out new yells which the cheer- leaders had originated. Because of a display of poor sportsmanship at several of the basketball games, the Pep Club printed and distributed to the student body and patrons the University of Illi- nois NCode of Sportsmanship.n A marked improve- ment was noted. STUDENT CQUNCIL Student Councils exist in many schools for good govern- ment, loyal constructive school spirit,' a spirit of cooper- ation among the students and faculty, and as a way for students to learn through experience of their own to accept and discharge their responsibilities to themselves and their school. The idea of a student council was presented last winter in an assembly and in several issues of nThe Planetn. Then those interested were called for a meeting at which Shirley Samuelson was elected to serve as chairman until a council could be formally organized. She appointed a constitution committee, Devonna Fritts, Richard Hough, John Gilpatrick, Frank Zink, Shirley Meier, and Pat Sauer,'who drew up a constitution and presented it for ratification by the entire high school at an assembly on March 24, 1944. Members of the new student council were chosen accord- ing to the constitution on March 29, 1944 to serve until the second Wednesday in November. Waste Fat Drive On three Saturdays in March, April, and May respectively, a good proportion of the Senior class made a thorough canvass of the town collecting waste fats for use in the manufacture of munitions. Altogether they collected close to a thousand pounds. Stamp and Bond Sales War stamps and bends have been on sale through the spring months on Monday and Thursday noons. As an added incentive to buy, tickets were given with each purchase for votes toward a Victory Queen and King. Voting has not been closed as yet, but the competition is aiding sales materially.
